Gaza, Syria, Lebanon


Cal Perry had an exclusive interview with Syrian President Assad on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Gaza:


Thursday, Cal was back in Beirut and reported via broadband about a series of rockets fired into northern Israel from Lebanon:


And a few hours later, Cal checks in again:

Meanwhile, in Cal's old stomping ground of Baghdad, Jill Dougherty reported last week on the opening of the new American Embassy:


By the way, CNN has an Aussie in Iraq this week, but it's not Michael Ware... Stan Grant, who was a correspondent for several years in Beijing and Hong Kong before leaving the network in 2007, recently returned and is now based in Abu Dhabi (thanks to a reader for a correction about that); however, at the moment he is filing reports from Baghdad, although neither of these have yet been shown on Domestic.





Finally, a clip I recorded Tuesday for my own use -- about the health issues Apple founder Steve Jobs has been dealing with -- turned out to also be the last appearance of Dr. Sanjay Gupta prior to the information about his nomination as Surgeon General leaking out. If he accepts the nomination and is appointed, this may be his final report as CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent:

    The Beirut live shots were kind of experimental, hence the weird backgrounds. It was done on a webcam because Cal's photographer, Christian Streib, was in Israel working on the coverage of Gaza.

    Also, I'm not sure where the reports started that Stan is based in Dubai. He's actually based in Abu Dhabi.

    Thanks for the correction about Stan, anon... I looked for an official press release about his return but did not find one.

    Interesting about Cal's photographer. Although I still think they need to at least get some posters on the wall or something!

    Ha! Agreed about the backgrounds. If this sort of live shot becomes a more common thing, I have a feeling they'll make sure the bureaux look a little nicer.

    By the way, if you saw a recent Backstory with Ben Wedeman, Christian was the guy who got tear-gassed in Rafah. I'm sure he wishes he'd stayed in Beirut!
