  1. Morning Express is # 2 in the demo for the
month of November according to TV Newser.
I think people are getting sick and tired of
three 24/7 political channels. To bad HLN
didn't go with someone like Chelsea Lately
instead of Joy from the View.If HLN actually
did more news they would be # 2.Nancy
even edged out Keith at MSNBC.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I too, feel Joy Behar had zero qualifications for anchoring a show...except a big mouth.
Jon Klein should have waited to see who would best "fit" the 7PM slot before he hired John King. I like John on Sunday, but there was time to appoint the next anchor.

  3. CNN needs to be less negative and focus on
the facts instead this person said this or said
that, the real news is getting lost because of
this. Each time yesterday while focusing on
the jobless rate CNN did not say things ares
mixed. They instead focused on how bad things
are.I would like for them to name one point in
history when a country came out of an economic
crisis in one year. Let's see how they handle
the news today that unemployment actually
went down and America could be gaining jobs
before next year. Hint news people, jobs was
not even one of the top ten searches on
Google, Yahoo. They need to also keep in
mind after the crisis people just don't care
for the financial shows on cable news.

  4. Lets hope that CNN concentrates on content.
The quality of the on air product is just not
very good these days.I am so over Tiger and
the WH party crashers. Can their 15 minutes
of fame be over. Does anyone know if King
will have a political show or will it be like PBS
who is coming up with a new format for the
    News Hour.

  5. Hooray Jack Gray fans. Our favorite 360 producer
will be making his on air debut on New Years Eve.
Jack might actually have a million followers on
    Twitter soon.

  6. One reason why I think CNN's ratings and
demos are so bad is due to the left vs right.
For the first time in 2010 baby boomers will
no longer be the dominate portion of the
    U.S. population. News organizations must
deal with this. The demos are changing with
regards to gender, race and even generations.
People 50 and under tend to not be slaves to
ideology. Besides it is getting old. Let's face
it cable news has not changed in 20 years.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I agree with the poster who said CONTENT was lacking, especially on 360. Did it ever occur to anyone that we already saw the party crashers entering, about a zillion times. Enough with the crime stories. Let Nancy Grace handle it. Isn't that why she has a show?
And if AC appears on Regis and Kelly in the morning, that's not News, 360. That's called AC promotion. If I wanted to watch R&K, I'd do it. It is a lame stupid, show, and you really wonder why a journalist, with Cooper's supposed ability would find it, interesting????

    ReplyDelete
  8. What will happen with the CNN Tonight show.
I just look at the ratings on TV by the Numbers
and Erica's numbers aren't that bad. Is this a
test show for something down the line.

    ReplyDelete
  9. @4:38 pm: You make an interesting point, that the demos are changing, but Baby Boomers are living Longer and Yes, they watch Cable News and VOTE in greater numbers than any population. It's
the Demos that Have to Change because the Baby Boomers now Have the $$$$.
Yes, we are retired and living a good life after working hard all our lives, most of us, and we are healthy, and enjoying spending our relative's inheritance!! So WE are the ones the networks SHOULD BE catering to. All of Them!! And some day, they will realize this.

  10. CNN needs to promote some of their 30
    somethings and some millennials(people
born after 1980. There is nothing for women
on television either. There are millions of
potential viewers that CNN is writing off.
Let's see more Erica, Betty, TJ and others.
I have noticed that CNN is now doing some
segments that are clearly aimed at women.
Particularly with Fredericka on the weekend.
Also 360 had a segment this week on females
in the military. Nightline is thriving against
Letterman and Conan. In fact Nightline topped
both in viewers and demos for the month of
    November.

    ReplyDelete
  11. As a modern day hipster, I say leave no group
out with regards to demos. Mass appeal is
more of a smart business these days.I get
info from all over the place.Television, internet
and mobile devices. I have a dvr so I really
don't miss anything.I also think the promos
on CNN are not very smart. This morning I
was watching and say an ad for Afghanistan
coverage. The ad included the word debate.
News is about information not debate. That
is a buzz word that tells me not to tune in
because it will be all talk with no news value.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The fasted growing segment on FB is 55 plus.
Instead of opinion how about a wide range of
programming. A news show for women, good
news because there are plenty of great human
interests stories that just does not make to tv
news.A newscast you can actually sit and watch
with your kids.As well as news for the digital
age that we live in aka 21st century.CNN
should be developing shows for all categories.
    For example, international news,docs,etc.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I am wondering if Jon Kings show will just be
political or a mix of different types of news.
If they do the politics like Political Mann , it
might work. Old media needs to really wise
up and adapt to the changing world.Tv news
is like the music industry and news papers,
they don't realize the value of what they can
bring to the table or how to use it.In the past
that might not have mattered with tv,but now
that television is no longer the only visual
medium you have to find a way to bring it
all together that will make people want to
    watch.

    ReplyDelete
  14. CNN please upgrade your graphics and banners.
There is way too much clutter on the screen.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @9:42AM: You make a good point about "buzz words." They do send a message whether positive or negative, and depending on your political leaning, you will ultimately decide whether to watch or not. CNN does not, do promos well. They are often stale and dull and lack any entisement to delve further.
The Daily Show, does intros and graphics in a very smart and animated way, even though they are a parody of FOX. CNN should start watching.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Nobody is into over the shoulder graphics.
Graphics should be done full screen and
animate with music.I too think CNN should
step up on the production of the stories that
will be featured that day.CNN really needs to
hire people who understand social media.
There was a great social media event organized
this weekend called the balloon hunt.MIT won
the challenge.I use this as an example of how
CNN should use social media to connect news
junkies. Believe me they do exist.I like what
Josh Levs is doing but I want more. Let's
hope CNN makes this transition because
let's face it that is the way of the world.
How about a nightly news program called
" Hack the News." for the new(s) generation.
Have a website where viewers can join and
    submit legit news,video,photos and interesting
items that people stumble across each day.
Let's say a journalist at CNN did a related
story. You make the connection between the
viewer, the journalists and the news,Also,
I think each week CNN should air digital
versions of many of the magazines within
the Time Warner family. There is a great
video on YouTube about something called
the Sports Illustrated tablet.I would like
to see half hour digital versions of some
of the mags on CNN. There is Time, which
has a good website as well as life and EW.
You can go on and on we all know that
TW is a media empire.I say have Don
Lemon do this daily program during the
weekday and have someone else do it
on the weekend.I say this because this
is truly the future of news. You must
really connect with viewers and really
care about what matters to them.
CNN invite your viewers to really participate.
Just reading comments on the air is really
lame. If you are going to use Twitter, use it
to host and event that will air live on CNN
for one hour of the day.It has to be real
time and on the subject. Let's say you
do an hour on some great shopping deals
on bargains. You get your viewers to tweet
about what they know and connect with
you and the viewers.I think CNN should
have 1 hour each day on a topic that
viewers can really talk about and stay on
subject and share info. I would say have
Don Lemon anchor the show since earlier
this year he was involved in a cancer
event on Twitter.I have noticed that Jack
Gray is also now tweeting news items.
CNN can learn a lot form Jack about how
to really use twitter. He participated in
an event one day last week and it was
a lot of fun. Also have it set up so viewers
can offer questions to the journalists that
can be answered by the journalists.Of
course by signing and joining you get
caveats : access to exclusive and extended
clips and news items that you can't get
    anywhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anon 9:08 you hit the nail on the head.
News on cable is outdated and there are
so many times when I feel disconnected
to the news stories and asking myself
why is this on CNN. They just don't get
    it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Just out of curiosity I did a quick web search
on Jack Gray. Now I know why he is making
a New Year's debut. Dude is # 201 on Twitterholic
and # 32 on Mediaite's power grid in the executive
section. Maybe he is the one who should be
on before TSR. Rick Sanchez is on television
and he pales in comparison, he is in the 600's.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Rick Sanchez is one of the reasons I stopped
watching CNN. I see no difference between him
    and Lou Dobbs.

    ReplyDelete
  20. CNN needs to hire Conor Knight and the
    Vanguard team from Current. Current
has let people down and is laying off
people so there are some digital journos
    available.

    ReplyDelete
  21. In an effort to get it's journalistic cred back
CNN should separate news from analysis &
opinion. Stop trying to make it seem like it
is all news. That's called infotainment and
    It is ruining CNN reputation.

    ReplyDelete
  22. To All: Do you really think if CNN dropped Rick Sanchez tomorrow, it would make a bit of difference in their ratings?
CNN needs to move their content faster. They stay on a story soooo long it is annoying. Even interesting stories are so dragged out, that you switch the channel in disgust.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anon 6:40 boy are you so ever right about the
pace of the news on CNN. Segments are too
long and boring. Most of the time unless it
is a really complicated storiy a 5 minute
interview is all that is needed. CNN needs to
become the 1st 24/7 news channel to put things
into perspective. No more misleading and
misinformation.CNN needs to just give us
a breakdown of what it all means, which means
make your reporters earn their pay. Stop it
with the ideological perspective on everything
and report on the meat and potatoes of each
story. I think it does matter who is in the
anchor chair and if they can be trusted to
bring you breaking news. CNN has some
problems with anchors that need to be
fixed way too often it looks like bad local
news.I will not watch the Twitter hour.
For anyone to think this is the future of
news needs to have their head examined.
It's like e-mails being read on the air.
By the way e-mail is no longer in vogue.
One of the posts said something about
viewers having their say. I say let it
happen. For at least a couple hours
a day. The news consumer has a lot
of power these days. You don't come to
the news the news will come to you.
That is a fundamental sea change.
You can be a part of the revolution and
pioneer change in the industry or you
can continue doing cheap talk that
matters to no one.I do hope they do
something about the CNN logo. It needs
to animate and go back and forth between
CNN live and CNN.com. No more crawl. A
media bar with times on both sides to
give it the digital feel and look. Show how
long the story is and how much time
remains until it is finished.I Tunes and
CNN.com does this and television needs
to get with the program. Also, you guys
are so right about the promos. Let's say
I just bought a brand new tv and happen
to be programming everything. When the
the channel scan hits CNN the 360 ad is
on about the Dems and Repubs. To me
that says to people who are not familiar
with 360 that it is a political show.
News is never mentioned.CNN needs to
fix it;s dayside and prime time shows.
I do think you need a very strong lead
in for TSR it is the link and transition from
day to night in programming you have to
get it right, Including right out of the
box with the morning show. It is your
first brand news show of the day.If the
morning show is not performing too well
you get a domino affect. Just take a look
at Morning Joe on MSNBC that is way they
are trending downward. That is exactly
why Morning Express is gaining and
growing in the morning as people get
ready to head out to school or work
    they information quickly before they
leave from home. All to often these days
watching CNN is like seeing everything
mentioned in the song Dirty Laundry
come to real life. Clearly someone has
decide we don't really need to find out
    what is really going on.

    ReplyDelete
  24. TVNewser is reporting CNN Hits 100.
Not a celebration, when CNN hit fourth place a hundred times, and prime time, as it happens, is the one in big time trouble. I would agree. I find Tony Harris and Kyra Phillips delightful in the day time....comes the prime line up and you'd rather curl up with a good book, even the Bible.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Whoa I was just on TV by the Numbers and
Morning Express had 400 thousand viewers
topping CNN on MSNBC. Beating both in the
demo too. They also have an item about CNN
being 4th in the 25-54 demo 41% of the time.
I think the big story will be HLN in 2010,
Either CNN or MSNBC is about to become 4th.
If HLN does something about Prime News it
is game over. Even Joy's numbers are better
so far for the month of December.Of course
this month can be tricky. To get a feel for how
things are going I am waiting for 3 weeks into
the new year.I think if Morning Express gets
to 500 thousand or more they will win the
    demo.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why is CNN using the phrase climate-gate
Maybe they should read Time.com and quit
trying to make everything a scandal. Good
riddance to CNN you have failed.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The bigger question is why is CNN saying at 8:00 PM, Prime Time begins right now. I was always under the impression prime time was anything in the evening. Is it their way of saying we don't count the 7PM slot? Glen Beck has a #1 show on FOX at 5 in the afternoon, so is this CNN's excuse for doing poorly all day or all evening?? Maybe BOTH.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Prime time officially starts at 8 for all of the
networks be they broadcast or cable.

There are some things to keep in mind here
folks. Traditional news sources are still the
choices for news on Facebook and Twitter.
NYT & CNN are considered to be businesses
that correctly use Twitter as an advantage
for their brands. Of course that is CNNbrk
    by the way.

Hey man, just give me the info I can take it
from there. Currently, one major problem
I have with CNN is too much over analysis
    of everything.

One of the responses here brings to mind
an interesting concept.CNN is a news org
that can bring the world into your home.
It is now world of mouth with regards to
news. The big issue facing cable news is
that a Pew study shows that most people
do not trust cable news because they are
just not into facts. Maybe less talk is the
remedy because it seems as though they
are trying to frame the story and control
    the message.

The title of Zakaria's program says it all.
We live in the global pubic square.CNN
does an update of the top stories each
hour these days how about throwing in
a segment devoted to news from around
the globe as well on an hourly basis.

I would love it if CNN would label news,
talk and opinion separately, but don't
hold your breath they would be admitting
they do more talk than news 24/7.

Heck we are lucky if we get 24 minutes
    of news these days.

CNN, FNC and MSNBC all play with facts
when it comes to advertising. They try
and spin things in their favor.

Great news about Robin & Team Morning
Express. I have to watch them instead of
CNN. I don't like it that endless shots off
of tv monitors. It is annoying .

    ReplyDelete
  29. That is funny. The legend of Jack Gray
grows. I see tweets about him all of the
time. Give the man a show.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Maybe if CNN tried to get a younger audience by being intelligent and informative and not salacious it might help them. Current is a great channel and CNN would do well to implement some of their type of work.

PS I may be in the minority but I like Joy Behar's show. I enjoy her take on things, after all the conservative crap out there it's nice to hear her side.

    ReplyDelete
  31. According to TVNewser, Greta wrote on her blog today that she feels sorry for CNN and her competition, Anderson Cooper in particular. "He is a smart and nice guy, but something is terribly wrong there."
When FOX feels sorry for CNN, CNN is in big trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ted B I agree with you 100 percent. CNN
would do itself good to be more like Current.
Stop the silliness. Enough with Amanda Knox.
Joy Behar must be doing something right.
According to TVN she topped King and Maddow
in viewers.I say this could be a week in which
HLN will top both CNN and MSNBC in prime and
days demos. Morning Express just keep getting
better and better.CNN is looking lousy right now
and they just keep getting worse and worse.
People are sick of talk talk. Do some news.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jon Klein should hire David Neuman who is
no longer with Current TV.Also Laura Ling who
is the brains behind Vanguard. Next all of the
    correspondents: Mariana Van Zeller,Adam
    Yamaguchi, Kaj Larsen.Christof Putzel and
others like Douglas Caballero, who is a music
guru and knows everything and anything about
music of all genres. All of these people would
be cheaper than the 8 million CNN gave Dobbs
to leave. These are young up and coming
journalists who could provide a lot of original
material for CNN. Sort of the like the merger
of old and new which its what the Sit Room
is suppose to be. HLN is one reason why
CNN has a little time on it's hands. I think
the do have a very smooth and modern look
and by far is way cooler than all of the other
cable news channels. Of course there is
Conor Knighton and Sarah Haskins ,Brett
Erlich, Sergio and all of the people on
Infomania. Don't care for Rotten Tomatoes.
Max and Jason at midnight is not to bad
either. The Vanguard people could give
the docs on CNN a real boost.I am not
sure about the future of Current they just
    laid of like 60 people.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The CNN spokes person's response to Greta's observation of CNN's desperate situation is even more terrifying, with a reply that makes absolutely no sense...."CNN's finances on TV and the web does more business than any other news outlet." What planet does this guy live on? He is obviously covering his tracks for Klein's total "screw
    up."

    ReplyDelete
  35. Headline News does not surprise me one bit.
They have all women in prime time. It would
be great if the would let Rachele Carey anchor
the 6 pm hour before Jane. I think that could
give them an even bigger boost. I know all of
the guys in my office at work watch her at 3
all of the time.CNN should have an all female
anchor team of all ethnic backgrounds with
the pace of news and interesting items like
Morning Express news in the fast lane.No
talking heads for the hour just the news.
Every single female anchor and reporter who
work at all of the CNN networks could be
a part of the rotation.HLN is ahead of the
game they realized that women could not
be ignored and less politics is best.
Personally I think the people at Current would
be a great fit for 360. It is the type of
journalism the Anderson pioneered at ABC.
CNN has to find a way to give all of it;s
shows it's own identity and stop doing the
same things over and over again. Three
words, content content content. Put the
all female team on opposite Keith and
Bill and I am telling you they will find an
    audience.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Nicole Lipan is still with CNN. Not too long ago
some of the blogs reported that the people who
anchored news on CNN.com had been let go by
the network. She is doing a series on Child
    prostitutes.

    ReplyDelete
  37. IMO.CNN,MSNBC & FNC all have too much
stuff interfering with the video. Just have
the logo and a simple banner without the
sub text.CNN needs to have as a motto for
    2010 :news,information, knowledge and
understanding. Give the network back to
the people who are a part of your large
    worldwide news organizations. Does CNN
really think it is a good idea to have Brown
do a special on global warming because
someone hacked data that is a decade old
and is not used by NASA or NOAA. Old
media duped again by not reading the
    document in full.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You guys do know that Klein is not in
charge of the show on HLN.

    ReplyDelete
  39. People are attuned to relevancy when they watch the news. Anderson Cooper and Michael Ware do not need to investigate the border AGAIN. Been there done that.
Now is the time when most people travel. Why not investigate the leak of the TSA manual? Why not investigate lack of security on the nations railroads? Why not investigate the way baggage is handeled at LAX and the larger airports?
This is a perfect example of why CNN is failing. Just because you put Cooper out in the field, doesn't mean the ratings will automatically be higher. He has to connect with the audience and be relevant and DO something relevant, even if it means talking to Sarah Palin....like Greta did. I don't like her but HER audience does.
What we don't need is more tunnel digging. Save that for the summer.
