CNN's Ratings Press Release

There's a lot of information included in CNN's latest press release. If you're an expert on deciphering the information we'd love your opinion. If your an amateur please remember when reading that it's CNN's interpretation of the numbers and possibly contains the slightest bit of spin? :)

CNN reached a cumulative June 2011 audience of 90.6 million, FNC followed with 77.4 million, HLN had 76.2 million, topping MSNBC’s 75.1 million.

  1. This tells me that CNN does not realize how
bad things are for the network. The 9-5 PM
data is bogus. It is the group of numbers
that each network is focusing on numbers
that make them look good. Did you notice
that CNN is only talking Q2 and not June.
Release all of the data CNN. This is spin
that is laughable. AC 360 is the only thing
CNN has going for it now and CNN will find
a way to mess that up unless the fix the 2
hours in front of 360. CNN also needs to
fix the morning shows CNN is trailing FNC
& MSNBC badly in prime time. There are
times when 360 is competitive but that
is going to get tougher unless CNN wakes
up and cancel ITA & PMT. No amount of
advertising is going to work at this point.
    Game over for both shows.

  2. More proof that CNN has the worst political team
on television. S & P is already saying come Aug 4th
if the U. S. misses a debt payment they will deeply
    cut the credit rating.

  3. Okay I'm certainly NO expert but I can read and I read the charts and comparisons on TVN and CNN PR is full of lies and distortions.
Of course they are going to put a "good face" on this disaster, but how stupid do they think, we as viewers are to say that failing shows are up percentage wise?
Why release anything at all if you're interpretation is total distortion and nonsense?
But that's one of the many problems with CNN. They are in denial and they wouldn't admit to a problem until it slaps them in the face.
CNN: You fool nobody but yourselves. You are failing miserably and to say you're ahead of MSNBC is like saying Toyota still has the number 1 car. It's just not the truth.

  4. The quality of programs of CNN is lacking.
Pundits are given freedom to lie to viewers.
You are more likely to see a tea partier than
someone who can engage in intelligent talk
or someone with expertise that is valuable
    when covering complex situations. Things
are going to get worst and CNN viewers are
the biggest losers and will turn the channel.
CNN is being run by the guy who gave us
Glenn Beck and Nancy Grace and you think
he favors intelligent talk. He doesn't and
CNN has so downgraded the news that they
are not effective or serious anymore.
Remember this guy said CNN didn't have
ratings because people didn't yell enough
or act the fool. Ken Jautz has no idea how
to put on decent shows and he never will.
CNN is cheering for the collapse because
in their warped minds they get ratings but
it is irresponsible journalism .CNN now
has a significant staff in NYC. Are you telling
me they can't find scholars, economists and
people who inform rather than incite. Until
someone is in management who is committed
to news and takes their job seriously.

  5. We will just call this Keeping Anderson Cooper
Honest . How can you publicly state that the
talking heads are bad for news yet permit the
discourse peddlers to have a huge platform
on 360 ? Why don't you walk the walk and
have contributors on 360 who give viewers
something they can walk away with. We once
    admired your journalistic professionalism &
regarded you as a standout in the pack of
useless so-called cable news shows. As some
longtime loyal viewers of 360, we are very
disappointed in the content that is currently
featured on what we once regarded as our
favorite news show. We don't know. Maybe
it's the pressure of ratings but what about
your viewers. Don't we deserve decent
journalism. Please Mr. Copper make the
effort to put together a nightly news show
that your viewers can say I actually learned
something. Lately, we think 360 is fanning
flames of political discourse. If you have
decided to become just like other news
shows, could you be honest with viewers
of 360 and let us know that the news is
not that important to you anymore. Crime
is given more time than actual news and
we walk away from your show with not
much these days. We think a journalist of
your stature yields incredible influence over
the content & guests appearing on 360.
Are you pleased 360 lately ? Would you
do things differently or try to be a force
of change in cable news by not imitating
    everyone else ?

  6. The you know what is about to hit the fan
for CNN parent company Time Warner. The
editor at large of their Time magazine called
President Obama a vulgar word this morning
on MJ. Unfortunately, for MJ and Mark Halperin
it went out over the air. Many are saying this
is the latest example of how the media has
zero respect for President Obama. TW is going
to be pressured to fire him. But they have
another problem. Is this the feeling for al TW
properties including CNN. Has Halperin lifted
the curtain on how much his company has
no respect since day one when it comes to
President Obama. The problem for TW is that
while this happened on MJ he is a TW employee
and covers politics. Right now there is a list
circulating with the names of TW properties.
CNN is on that list right along with TIme.

  7. Maybe Cooper has no control over some of the talking heads on his show. He made it a point to say these people and politics will not be on his new show.

    ReplyDelete
  8. CNN might ignore this blog but apparently.
FNC does not. They are saying an ensemble
cast will replace Beck. Guess what, the cast
will be rotating FNC people who viewers are
familiar with and guests. I know I have seen
posts here with regards to an ensemble all
female journalists news show for women.
Apparently FNC thinks this is a great place
for ideas. The way things are going for CNN
in the AM maybe the ensemble women's
news show is not a bad idea.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Funny how CNN is failing to mention that
Mark Halperin works for Time Warner and
they are his major employer not MSNBC.
Not very smart for CNN. It is already out
there that Halperin works for Time. Joe &
Mika were laughing at first. They are all
sorry that they got caught. Somewhere
there has to be a brave news executive
who says enough and gets rid of all of
the talking heads on cable news. They
are pimping this kind of talk and they
    encourage this behavior.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Okay. I am going out on the limb here saying
that Erin Burnett will replace Eliot Spitzer. TV
BY the Numbers has the ratings for Wednesday
and it is not pretty for American Morning or ITA
or CNN as a whole. This can't continue. Wake up.
AM only had 216,000/95,000. It was the same
story in prime time for CNN. The lead prime time
show on CNN, ITA had 276,000/106,000. PMT
    405,000/125,000. AC360 632,000/226,000.
That gave CNN 437,000/153,000. Before the
year is over CNN has to cancel AM, ITA & PMT.
But we all know CNN. Let's see how long it
takes and if CNN will still stick with losers.

    ReplyDelete
  11. @9:29AM: Could not have said it better. Fully agree with your comment about AC/360.

    ReplyDelete
  12. What Mark Halperin did is inexcusable and just because Joe said "Come on, go for it," doesn't mean you sink to the lowest level.
This is just another example of the disgusting attitude and disrespect that is being shown this President because of his race.
Halperin should be fired as a contributor on MSNBC.
No matter what you think, you do NOT go on television or into any public forum and use profanity to describe the POTUS, unless of course it's Sarah Palin, who started the whole thing with her "take back America." It could be used to describe HER mentality and ALL those like her.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh, that explains why we have crappy shows
on CNN. It is their policy that talking heads
be on all of their shows. Yeah. Like that is
a recipe for success. CNN needs to be the
1st cable news channel to drop all of the
pundits. However, CNN thinks the talking
heads are ratings gold. Psych. Like viewers
look forward to pundits each day on CNN.

Personally, I am not surprised about the ratings
for Eliot Spitzer or Piers Morgan. Not like they
would ever catch on. Only CNN management
    fell for those 2.

That is a great question as to wether or not
Anderson has editorial control of 360. Is he
    like Brian Williams at NBC.

Right now CNN will have trouble hiring
people like Aisha Tyler, Toure or Strombo.
Who wants to work for a network that is
going no where. What is their selling point.
We got pundits but nothing else,

    ReplyDelete
  14. CNN definitely has the worst political team
on television. Jessica Yellin thinks that the
President should just do whatever Repubs
want. The fact of the matter is that the 14th
amendment gives the President the authority
to raise the debt ceiling and he can call their
bluff. Even people from the Reagan era are
saying it is nothing congress could do. The
entire House and Senate would have to sue
    the President.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Unfortunately, CNN no longer has a journalistic
soul. No one at the network understands that
if you want people to watch CNN put on some
    good shows.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Let's try to be fair to Anderson. Is 360 perfect ?
NO. In comparison to most cable news programs
Anderson does more news. Isha Sesay and The
Ridiculist have been much need additions to the
show. I'm not a big fan of the crime stories but
at least it is not for a full hour. Like ti or not,
when the closing arguments start next week
every single 24/7 will carry it live. Should the
Casey Anthony trial be a major news story
    worthy of live coverage. NO.

    ReplyDelete
  17. CNN is going down in flames and they deserve
everything they have coming to them. News is
suppose to be about information not punditry.
Actually cable news is not growing. It is simple
news has to change with the times and it is
not evolving and finding new and innovative
reporting or actually reporting.CNN and all of
the cable news networks make choices. They
don't have to take the low road that journalism
is currently traveling. In 24 hours you get no
news, There is more opinion . I am in favor
or the BBC, CBC and other networks being
accessible to Americans. We need access to
real news . It is a national disgrace.

    ReplyDelete
  18. If CNN stops ignoring the messages viewers are
sending about American Morning, In The Arena
& Piers Morgan, they will be fine. CNN is all too
arrogant in that they don't seem to care about
what viewers think.CNN could make millions
by doing real news. International news matters
and facts are necessary. Why did CNN give up
the brand for I don't know what ? CNN could
stop airing In The Arena and Piers Morgan now
and replace them with summer shows. CNN has
been wrong about President Obama from day
    1. Everything they say ends up not happening.
CNN should never have put tea partiers,
birthers and extremists on a payroll. Unless
someone cleans house, it is over for CNN.
If you have pundits on your payroll, you
can't cover politics with any credibility.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Check out the TVN item on Mark Whitaker
and Farreed Zakaria. These 2 men get it.
I don't agree with Zakaria on 1 thing. CNN
is not getting smarter. I hope that from
what they are saying that CNN has a plan.
However, he is right that Fox viewers are
not going to watch CNN and CNN needs to
be on the level with NPR, BBC and NYT.
Whitaker is right on point about CNN
figuring out their audience. Hint it is not
about ideology. It is about content, original
    journalism, story-telling ,presentation
and respecting the intelligence of viewers.
Television is a visual medium. There are
tons of news items out there. CNN just
    needs to be committed.

  20. CNN please hire George Stroumboulopoulos.
C'mon man help us out. The Hour or Strombo
Tonight is a live news show. If you have time,
we invite you to please check out the episodes
    online. You won't be disappointed.

  21. From what he is saying CNN is keeping ITA
& PMT. That is not good news for CNN or
viewers.CNN is just now getting around to
find out who actually watches CNN and the
realization that FNC viewers are not going
to turn to CNN. What has been going on
at that place. There is your answer folks.
No matter how low Eliot Spitzer and Piers
Morgan drag down CNN ratings they will
be on CNN in prime time. In other words
they get a free pass because CNN will
never admit they screwed things up.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am very skeptical. CNN is not going to change.
The last paragraph in the NPR interview says it
all. CNN makes 100's of millions of dollars. CNN
can do whatever it wants. CNN tries to have it
both ways. We are not MSNBC or FNC. No CNN
just puts too many talking heads on the same
    channel.GPS is a smart show. Sometimes 360
& TSR can be but not most o the time on CNN.
It is always funny to hear the news executives
say people know about the news from the web.
Isn't it your job to bring us the news that we
might not know about. I guess no political
websites are out there for people to go to all
day long. So we just hire them and ram them
down your throat. Until CNN finds away to get
away from the noise and being right in the
middle of the silliness, the network won't
    make a comeback.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ratings are in for Thursday. CNN has to make
changes in prime time. TV BY the Numbers
has the ratings. Nobody seems to want to look
at Eliot Spitzer or Piers Morgan. How much
longer will CNN fail to act. CNN is getting close
to CNBC, I think Spitzer tied CNBC and Morgan
barely edged them out. Maybe CNN had better
put the women's show on as early as Tuesday.
CNN does not have to bring in new talent for
that but it is reaching critical mass for CNN.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Keith Olbermann's not for everyone but he had it right when he criticized Jessica Yellin for asking a Democrat why they wouldn't just "give the Republicans what they want" and stop "playing politics". Are the conservatives NOT playing politics by wanting the country to go into default just so they can blame Obama? I didn't like Ed Henry as CNN's White House Correspondent and it appears that Yellin is going to be equally hard to stomach.

    ReplyDelete
  25. CNN is its own worst enemy.
Instead of using a substitute host for 360, which is its highest rated show, not saying much, but....did they have to skip it altogether and show a rerun of Amanda Knox and how her trial began?
This was used as an air time filler.
You mean to say everyone, every soul, at CNN was on vacation??
    You deserve your ratings.
And don't forget to release a statement about how well you're doing.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Boy CNN definitely has some headaches.
Now that there are political blogs. Do
viewers really need to be represented
on tv by pundits that share their politics.
Viewers can get involved themselves. Can
you say old media ? You really don't need
pundits on tv anymore. Before the 2012
campaign is in full swing. CNN needs to
come up with a new approach to covering
politics. I was wondering the same thing
about Jessica Yellin when she said that.
CNN reporters should at least try to look
like they are even-handed. Right now CNN
repeats the tea party talking points. So it
doesn't surprise me one bit about the way
CNN covers politics. CNN made an agreement
with the tea party and they get daily memos.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ouch. The ratings for CNN seem to be
moving in the wrong direction. Aren't
they suppose to go up and not down.
    Those demo numbers are problematic.
Does anyone know why they ruined CNN.
The AM trio, PMT & ITA are not working.
Would CNN really put on some different
summer shows. It's not like what they
are airing now is exactly helping.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Viewers are pretty angry with CNN. At this
point CNN is really messed up. Anything
CNN does might be too little too late.CNN
did bring this on themselves. In the words
of Jon Stewart : You're CNN and somehow
they forgot all about that and the legacy.
You just can't give anyone a show and do
anything when you see viewers don't like
it. You end up without viewers and without
viewers you are nothing.I think people on
this blog have been saying if we wanted
FNC we would be watching them. There
was once a reason why we watched CNN.
