Layoffs At CNN

According to TVNewser:
CNN has quietly laid off a handful of staffers in its Washington DC bureau.
We hear that most of the departures were senior level producers and staff, many on specific beats like the White House, national security and the Department of Justice, and who had been with the channel for a long time. The departures are said to be related to a realignment of resources, and re-designing of some of the production roles.
To that end, CNN is not expected to reduce headcount. Rather, it will be posting a number of new job listings for roles in the bureau. Reading between the lines: staffers who had been at the channel for a long time are departing in favor of younger, less expensive staff.
“The network just sent a tremendous amount of institutional knowledge and people with good sources and contacts out the door,” a CNN source says. “This will definitely impact CNN’s coverage when it comes to being out front on certain types of stories.”
In addition to staffers that were laid off, some other senior level staffers opted to depart the company on their own over the last month or so, another source says.

Yesterday CNN shuttered its CNN Radio unit and laid off the staff there. CNN Radio was responsible for creating long-form audio content for the channel’s digital platforms.

It’s Official: CNN Bringing Back Crossfire

Newt Gingrich, S.E. Cupp, Stephanie Cutter, Van Jones to Host Debate Program

CNN today announced that Crossfire, previously the longest running political debate program on television, will return to the network this fall. Hosting from the right will be Newt Gingrich and S.E. Cupp, with Stephanie Cutter and Van Jones hosting from the left.

                “Few programs in the history of CNN have had the kind of impact on political discourse that Crossfire did – it was a terrific program then, and we believe the time is right to bring it back and do it again,” said Jeff Zucker, President of CNN Worldwide. “We look forward to the opportunity to host passionateconversation from all sides of the political spectrum.  Crossfire will be the forum where America holds its great debates.”

In addition, all four hosts will appear across the network’s programming and its special coverage surrounding elections and political events.

“Following the successful launches of Around theWorld, The Lead with Jake Tapper, and New Day, we felt it was the right time to turn our attention next to Crossfire,” said Ken Jautz, Executive Vice President of CNN. “This will be the next step in reinvigorating our lineup of live programs.”

Newt Gingrich is the former Speaker of the House and former Republican presidential candidate. He served the Sixth District of Georgia for two decades. Gingrich is known as the architect of the “Contract with America” that in 1994 led to the Republican Party majority for the first time in 40 years. In 1995, he was elected Speaker of the House, where he served until 1999. During his tenure, Congress passed welfare reform, the first balanced budget in a generation, and the first tax cut in 16 years. Gingrich is a former Fox News contributor. He has published 24 books, including 14 fiction and non-fiction New York Times best-sellers.  

S.E. Cupp is a conservative columnist, commentator and public speaker. She is author of the book “Losing Our Religion: The Liberal media’s Attack on Christianity” and co-author of the book “Why You’re Wrong About the Right.” She will continue her role as a contributor to TheBlaze, now out of the network’s new Washington bureau, appearing on a variety of network shows including “Real News.”  She is currently the co-host of MSNBC’s “The Cycle.” In addition, Cupp is a columnist at the New York Daily News and a contributing editor at Townhall Magazine.

Stephanie Cutter is a partner at Precision Strategies, a strategic consulting firm launched earlier this month with three veterans from the Obama 2012 campaign team. Cutter has a long history in politics, serving most recently as the deputy campaign manager for President Obama’s re-election campaign and having joined Obama’s 2008 campaign as Michelle Obama’s chief of staff and senior adviser to then SenatorObama.  Before joining the campaign, she served in the White House as Assistant to the President and Deputy Senior Adviser for communications andstrategy, and was previously counselor to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. Cutter also spent time in the U.S. Senate as a senior advisor to both Majority Leader Harry Reid and the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

Van Jones is the founding president of Rebuild the Dream, an organization that promotes innovative policy solutions for the U.S. economy. He is a Yale-educated attorney and author of two The New York Times best selling books, “The Green Collar Economy” and “Rebuild the Dream.” He is the founder of four thriving, not-for-profit organizations. Jones is also the recipient of numerous awards, including: the World Economic Forum’s “Young Global Leader” designation; one of Rolling Stone magazine’s “12 Leaders Who Get Things Done” in 2012; one of Time Magazine’s 2009 “100 Most Influential People in The World.” In 2009, Jones worked as the green jobs advisor for the Obamaadministration.

                Crossfire, which aired weeknights from 1982 to 2005, examined political and social issues in a televised debate. Conservative Pat Buchanan and liberal Tom Braden were the original hosts of the program, but over the years Crossfire featuredvarious hosts from the right and from the left, including Robert Novak, Tucker Carlson, James Carville and Paul Begala. Guests on the program were frequently top lawmakers from across the political spectrum, but also included an eclectic mix of other personalities: Bob Hope, Rupert Murdoch, Charlton Heston, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Dr. Jack Kevorkian, Rush Limbaugh, Christopher Reeves, Arianna Huffington and Howard Cosell. As the preeminent political talk program, Crossfire cemented its status in the political and cultural lexicon when President Bill Clinton joked during hisremarks at the 1997 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner that the newly opened Newseum featured an exhibit with “CNN’s very first Crossfire-- from the left, Alexander Hamilton, from the right, Aaron Burr, topic, gun control.”

Congratulations to Erin Burnett & David Rubulotta

US Weekly is reporting:

Erin Burnett has made a name for herself reporting the news -- but this time, she is the news! The CNN anchor -- host of her own show, Erin Burnett OutFront -- is pregnant, a CNN rep confirms to 
"I can confirm that Erin Burnett and her husband David Rubulotta are expecting their first child in November," the rep tells Us. "They are both very excited."

The news comes six months after the couple's wedding. They married last December in a ceremony at New York's City Hall, a little over a year after announcing their engagement in September 2011.

Burnett, 36, has hosted CNN's Erin Burnett OutFront since 2011. She previously co-anchored CNBC's Squawk on the Street and has also appeared on Meet the Press, the TODAY show, Morning Joe, and NBC Nightly News. Her husband is a managing director for Citigroup.

Howard Kurtz Leaves CNN For Fox News

FOX News Channel (FNC) has hired veteran media reporter Howard Kurtz, announced Michael Clemente, Executive Vice President of News for the network. He will begin in this new role on July 1st.
Kurtz will anchor a version of what is now called Fox News Watch, which focuses on the media, with a new format during the weekends. Additionally, he will serve as an on-air analyst for a variety of programs throughout the week, while also writing a regular column on FoxNews.com, commenting on social media news, industry trends and breakthroughs, in addition to looking at how media are used in politics. Meanwhile, Jon Scott, current anchor of FOX News Watch, who won an Emmy for his writing at NBC’s Dateline, will move to the specials unit where he will serve as anchor.
In making the announcement, Clemente said, “Howie is the most accomplished media reporter in the country. He’s also a master of social media trends, information good and bad, and a veteran political reporter. Altogether, he will add even greater depth to a very accomplished team of reporters and anchors.”
Kurtz added, “I’m excited to be bringing my independent brand of media criticism to Fox News. I want to thank CNN for giving me such a prime opportunity over the years and was tempted to continue, but the chance to create a revamped program and establish a strong online presence was too good to pass up. I hope to add a new dimension to Fox’s coverage and have some fun while diving into the passionate debates about the press and politics.”
Since 1998, Kurtz has been the host of CNN’s weekly media criticism program, Reliable Sources, where he has scrutinized the performance and biases of the media. Until recently, he served as the Washington, D.C. bureau chief writing on the intersection of politics and media for The Daily Beast and Newsweek. Prior to that role, Kurtz spent 29 years at The Washington Post in various capacities. He became the media reporter for the paper in 1990 and wrote the weekly Media Notes column, which was widely read throughout the industry. Kurtz joined The Washington Post in 1981, after being hired by Bob Woodward, and went on to serve as a justice department and congressional reporter, New York bureau chief and deputy national editor before covering the media beat as a reporter, columnist and blogger.
A graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the author of five books, including Media Circus, Reality Show and the New York Times bestseller Spin Cycle, Kurtz has also contributed to a number of magazines ranging from Vanity Fair to New York.

ROSA FLORES JOINS CNN

CNN has named Rosa Flores as correspondent it was announced today by Terence Burke, Vice President of Newsgathering for CNN/U.S.  She will start in July and will be based in New York City.  

Said Burke, “Rosa is an outstanding reporter who made her mark in local television covering numerous breaking news and enterprise stories.  We are thrilled to have her join the CNN team.”  

In addition to her role as correspondent Flores will serve as substitute anchor.

Throughout her career Flores covered a variety of national, state and local stories.  Before joining CNN, she anchored the late afternoon newscast at WBRZ, the ABC affiliate in Baton Rouge. Before moving to Louisiana’s capital city, Flores covered enterprise and breaking news stories at WDSU-TV, the NBC affiliate in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Her reporting included extensive coverage of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Prior to that, she reported for KHOU-TV, the CBS affiliate in Houston and KWTV in Oklahoma City.  

“To be able to report for the premiere newsgathering operation in the world has been a dream ever since I covered my first story. I am honored and excited to be joining CNN and work with the best in our profession. I look forward to being able to tell stories on a national level. I can’t wait to get started,” said Flores.

Flores is the author of “Progreso,” a history book about her hometown on the Texas-Mexico border.  In 2012, RTDNA awarded her the Michele Clark Fellowship in memory of the CBS News correspondent who died tragically in a plane crash while on assignment.  Flores was also selected to participate in the Peter Jennings Project for Journalists and the Constitution and in the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental reporting oil spill seminars.  

Flores is an active member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ). She also helped found the organization’s Oklahoma City chapter.

Flores is dedicated to community service work, making dozens of appearances at schools and before professional groups.  She created a motivational series of talks for teenage girls and is currently writing a children’s book.    

She earned a Bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and another Bachelor’s in business administration and a Master’s in accounting at the University of Texas at Austin.
