  1. Congrats to Brian Stelter for winning the demo last Sunday. I still think though that he shouldn't have been chosen at permanent host of Reliable Sources. He's not great at anchoring.

On a side note, interesting how CNN added Michael Smerconish to Saturday mornings rather than Sunday. I wonder if he could be a test run to have him take over Sunday mornings in place of Candy Crowley.

On another side note, once Piers Morgan Live ends, Piers will still be doing weekly big interview specials. Didn't Larry King do that after his show ended? That didn't last at all. And neither will this. The damage is done. His contract ends in 6 months in September. I don't think it will be renewed.

  2. Amazing. There is a missing Malaysian jet and AJAM
is the only network with extended coverage. There
are Americans onboard, including an infant. MSNBC
has just started doing updates but CNN is not even
    mentioning a thing.

  3. Let's face it boys & girls, Ted Turner is no longer running CNN. Under Turner's leadership, he would have said stay with the missing Malaysian jet story. That is the major problem with CNN these days no innovation. AJA has been doing a great job covering the Ukraine,Crimea,Venezuela & the missing jet. I give them a lot of credit for their massive amount of content and being interesting and unpredictable. The story content on AJA blows me away. I really can't take CNN, MSNBC or FNC anymore. They have become annoying. We can only hope that AJA continues to do it's own thing.

  4. Ukraine, Malaysia and Venezuela deserve in depth
extensive coverage. AJAM is right to do so. Just
    please bring back Vanguard.

The Steam which airs on AJAM is the future of TV
news. Engagement with viewers is a must. A show
like this should use Google Hangout for more
viewer participation. The APP is cool too but why
not show the conversation maybe to the right
side of the screen. They already use Skype, FB &
Twitter effectively. AJAM needs to find a way to
make this a 24/7 thing. There is also Vine and
Instagram, What's APP. Always keep the talk
and conversation intelligent. No pundits or rants.
Just the hosts, guests and viewers as contributors.
This is the future of cable news. CNN, FOX and
MSNBC are lousy at social TV. AJAM should expand
the Steam to an hour. Cover more topics. Move
Real Money to 630 PM. If you build a community,
    you build an audience.

From 6 PM until midnight is the best time to
really engage viewers. Surprisingly AAJAM does
a remarkable job at story-telling. Most news
orgs are cutting back while AJAM is not and it's
pretty visible on air.AJAM says Consider This is
interactive but there is now evidence that this is
so while watching the show. CNN, FOX and
MSNBC are dinosaurs. There is zero innovation
or creativity. This is a huge opening for AJAM.
Right now it is not exactly easy to find AJAM
on the dial. For some strange reason Direct
TV moved it to 347. They have something called
    NUTV in place of Current.

  5. I think you mean Stream. Viewers have to be involved
and engaged with the news. Take Part LIve on Pivot does a great job too. TVN releases the ranking each week for the cable networks. Last week AJAM had 16 thousand prime time viewers. It will be interesting to see if they get a bump from the Ukraine crisis and the missing jet in Malaysia.

  6. Will cable news ever be viewer-oriented ? Move away
from pundits to people? Focus on news and not the
noise ? Deal with the changing demos of America ?
Try to broaden viewership by bringing in more
female, ethnically diverse and younger viewers ?
Move away from Washington and Wall St and really
cover America and the world ? Have intelligent
conversation and guests that make you think ?
GIve viewers avenues to enhance their news
experience ? I'm betting that CNN, FOX and MSNBC
will not. So AJAM here is your chance. HuffPO
has a post about Ronan Farrow and it's what
you guys have been saying, FD is nothing news
It's the same tired out stuff. If AJAM sets out
to be fresh, new and innovative, they will grow
and have an impact on the news

  7. Jeff Jarvis at Buzz Machine has written a 3 part series on why the news is so bad thus failing to bring in viewers. He is 100 % percent accurate. Lack of innovation in the news industry is destroying news.
The series is called Rethinking TV news : What's broken, what's possible. CNN could use a 21st century Ted Turner. Jeff Zucker is not the answer. He's a part of the problem.

  8. After viewing the clip of Justin Bieber on TVN, someone has to slap his face so hard he falls out of his chair, and yells really loud, "Kido, you don't have any talent and I don't know why I'm wasting my time speaking to you," and then exit the room
leaving him on the floor face down.
Maybe in his next interview he might learn to be a bit more respectful to the interviewer.
Watching him is like "watching paint dry," and he should know it.

  9. Really dig AJA. Any network that gives scientists
their own show is tops in my book. TV Newser's
latest ranker has them at 19,000 viewers for the
week of March 3, 2014. Maybe they are growing.
I'm stunned that others don't have a show like
The Stream. A show with an app that let you
take part in the news is a no brainer in these
modern times. Google glasses and drones are
also being used to cover news but I see no
evidence that networks are using all of these
tools to cover the news. Data journalism is not
being used effectively either. Why are pundits
still on the payroll ? Invest in news not talking
    heads.

  10. Loved Rachel Maddow on Late Nite With Seth Meyers.
Loved when she said that the Christie scandal has us hooked because it is straight out of a Soprano/gangster episode.
And yes, she is right about that.
Unfortunately, the latest according to the NYT, Christie appointee actually gave away pieces of the WTC to "friends of his re-election campaign," this past September!
Absolutely disgusting and shameful. Most of NJ
can't wait for this obese 'macho gansta'to be indicted and resign.

  11. OT a bit - Harvard U is now the archive for all Jeff Toobin's writings. He mentioned it on Twitter.

  12. A big "so what," on CNN's demo ratings for the building explosion
    in Harlem.
    An inferior network cannot solely
    depend on really "breaking news,"
    for ratings.
And Fox News will continually beat CNN on ALL breaking subject matter because they aren't dependent on one anchor to give them their ratings.
Cooper's win in the demo over O'Reilly was a fluke...and flukes don't make a network better.
And might I point out that in TV land, 63,000 viewers isn't a whole lot 'of win.'
    Even Cooper knows that.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Demos is how all of the networks make money so
the 360 demo win matter. The average age of each
networks viewers matters too. The demo for FOX
has been shrinking, why do you think the brought
in Megan Kelly ? Advertisers care a lot about the
breakdown of viewers. With FOX getting older and
older they can't bring in new viewers. FOX has the
most viewers but the demos are a big issue. All
CNN or MSNBC need to do is beat FOX in the demo.
Advertisers don't dismiss demos. FOX has an old
audience and it not bringing in younger viewers.
FOX goes not gain much in demo viewers. That
tells you about the age of the viewers.

  14. Don't forget that it is no longer just about TV. That is the old business model. AJAM has a brand new killer APP. This tells me that they are trying to be a multi-platform cable news network.AJAM is suppose to be launching AJ+ sometime this year. They would be bringing in viewers from multiple devices That is a giant step into social TV. AJ+ is rumored to be a stand alone channel apart from linear TV. The APP makes it easier to share stories on social media. I don't see the other cable news channels doing a stand alone non-linear cable news channel. This is getting interesting. Mobile is only going to get bigger and bigger. If AJAM is smart , they will use content from AJ+. instead of repeating shows from the previous day feature some 30 minute segments of material from AJ+. GIGAOM has a fascinating article about this. Vice is also rumored to be launching a 24/7 non-linear real time news network. This is a news junkie dream. News nirvana. TV is a medium but not the only media. The future is now : TV, tablets, smartphones, live-streaming, real time, viewers able to engage for social TV. This is what you call a real news revolution not Ronan Farrow.

  15. AJAM should take a cue from Current and drop the
crawl, get rid of the anchor desk for an informal
setting that is more inviting, use a media bar for
all of their packages. Disappointment has been
expressed in social media that in many ways AJAM
if too much like CNN. The content is great but the
presentation and delivery is no different. There are
millions of potential viewers. If a AJAM is trying to
be different, it should be visible and tangible. Also,
put the story info banner in place of the crawl. Ad
Age had a story about the networks to watch and
AJAM. FUSION & PIVOT were on the list.

  16. Wow. 360 was the top demo in all of cable news on Thursday. CNN messed up the flow by airing Chicagoland. Stick with the story that viewers care
    about instead.

  17. To the people who keep bashing CNN, why are you even on this blog?

And to the person who keeps commenting on "AJAM", you know that this is ALL THINGS CNN not ALL THINGS AJAM, right?

  18. What's wrong comparing CNN to other networks ? How else would we know what CNN is facing ? CNN's competitors matter. IMHO , this blog is the best and most informative.

  19. To the commenter who says "We keep bashing CNN,"....well yes, we do. So maybe it will then get better because right now it is laughable, or haven't you noticed?Did you look at the Jon Stewart clip? Do you know WHO Jon Stewart is?
Do you look at the rating comparisons on TVN?
And to the commenter who implied that only Fox's demos were older,
    have you seen CNN's demos?
Some of them are just catching their last breath of fresh air.
Can't believe CNN actually aired Chicagoland on Thursday. They're even more stupid on a good day.

  20. Oh yes. Leave to Jon Klein to engage the great mind of Sarah Palin and partner with her, according to TVN.
After 'Sarah Palin's Alaska,' which was an instant top ten hit amongst those in the know, like Newt Gingrich. She will now narrate Sarah's Palin's America, or as Tina Fey might put it: "I can see all the way from my house to yours."

  21. oSo if no one really knows what happened to flight 377, and no one really does, isn't this all just speculation and wasted air time?
If and when investigators find debris from a downed air craft, that is the time to speculate.
Right now News of 377 is anyone's guess, even the so called "experts."
