Your Views on the News December 29,2009

As 2009 draws to a close we find our favorite news channel finishing in 4th place. Why the nosedive and how do they recover (or is just making money enough)? We'd love to hear your opinions.

Phebe, the blog says "new" channel and not "news." This correction might be of importance.

According to TVNewser, Ali Velchi seemed to hold his own when anchoring the explosive device incident and won his time slot against FOX NEWS. This might be worth noting that none of the "big guns" were called in. Perhaps, this just shows that it is the NEWS STORY, that is of importance to the viewers and NOT who is reporting it. It also maybe a lesson to CNN, that "stars" are here and gone tomorrow but news is always happening.

Janet Napolitano needs to resign and not be given another chance. To say "the system worked," just to cover herself, as she did to Candy Crowley on Sunday, is enough to call for her resignation.
If she had said, Yes, we need to be more diligent and focused, and not complacent, than she would have been doing her job. The "system failed" and Ms.Napolitano failed to tell us the truth about the system's failure.
As it stands now, she needs to retire from where she came, Arizona.

Wow Candy Crowley is subbing for Larry
Kint. Let's hope she has a big night.

Wow, Rachel took CNN to task for taking Janet
Napolitano's remarks out of context by playing
the entire clip. I am not sure if the fear CNN is
speaking of is really true because the ratings
certainly don't reflect that. i do find it rather
interesting that it was Campbell Brown, Erica
Hill & Candy Crowley in prime time tonight.
The numbers tomorrow should be interesting.

Finally, someone woke up at CNN and Rick
Sanchez was not on in prime time. I was on
Twitter counter earlier today and Sanchez is
# 863, Jack Gray is 215, but Jack is picking
up at least 1,000 followers a day on Twiter,
and Rick Sanchez gets extended to 2 hours
and can't get people to follow him.

That explains why CNN is # 4. They ignore
the data that tells them their viewers don't
like what they are seeing. At least MSNBC is
acknowledging that their daytime programs
didn't work and people want news.CNN just
has on blinders and fails to see what is going
on at this rate they won't get better in 2010.
I think HLN is becoming the protest channel.
HLN topped both CNN and MSNBC in the
demo and viewers in prime time.

I think it is a "good sign" for Candy sitting in for Larry and it was no accident.
She did well as she always does.
Erica's ratings were pretty good on Monday. She did better than anyone expected considering she is a substitute.

May the New Year be the year of the "woman" for CNN!

Anonymous said...

I don't like quoting her, but since I'm reading her book, the one smart thing Sarah Palin said is,"If you want to talk about things, hire a man. If you want to get things done, hire a woman."

I agree with the posts here. I think it is no
accident that CNN went with all women. CNN
has an abundance of smart female reporters
who could bring something to the cable news
arena that has never been done before.I have
been posting for quite some time about the
rotating of female anchors and reporters at
CNN bringing us the news.Be they are CNN,
CNN International or CNN.com get a diverse
group of women each week. Give it an cool
name like "Girlfriend I've Got Some News."
have different music each day,something
like Amos Lee's Arms Of A Woman and
if there are interviews call the segment
"Girls NIght Out" and even use the title
when the female reporters like Christiane
go to the rough places to cover the news.
Of course at times you can even have some
of the male anchors for a coed cast. I think
in the 8 pm hour this would be a hit.
I say have 3 or 4 people.C'mon CNN Brian
Williams is now outnumbered.Personally,
I have started watching Diane Sawyer,
I love the look and the mix of the news
stories. We all know the women at CNN,
the possibilities. At the end of the show,
picture this : a segment when the ladies
talk about a story that they have discovered
that you have not heard of all day, have
something like Alicia Keys Diary song
playing as the intro. Begin and end the
show each day with a new song and use
music in and out that you know women
relate to, there are hundreds. It can never
get old because you can always upgrade.
Let me be clear real news and not the
View. I don't like the show I am so sick
of the rudeness.

I have noticed that about Erica's ratings
for CNN Tonight and when she subs on
360. Her numbers have potential. At HLN
she pulled in some pretty good numbers.
I think that is what is happening,CNN is
taking a look at the numbers for HLN
since it when to an all female hosts in
prime time. I just wish that actually had
one news show.CNN started of strong
with the news about the attempted terror
plot but lately they are getting more and
more ridiculous>Do we really need Ben
Stein on this. Considering this is such
a serious issue CNN should handle it
as such and stop trying to get ratings
by having someone come on and make
crazy statements.

Does that mean a possible female replacement
for Jon Klein? I say Laura Ling. She is the brains
behind Current TV's excellent Vanguard docs.
Yes she is one of the journalists take captive
in North Korea. Maybe she can convince her
Vanguard buds to come work at CNN. I think
that is what CNN needs to do add more journos,
these people help expand the news operation
and will not cost 8 million, which is what CNN
paid Lou Dobbs to leave. I have been watching
MSNBC some this morning, they are definitely
getting more serious and using their people
at NBC. The big thing for me is that CNN
needs to get back to news and adapting the
Current format during some hours of the
day may not be a bad thing.

I hope CNN gets smart about social media
for 2010. Use FB,YouTube & Twitter to spread
news and not views or trying to make it all
about you. Unless CNN tries to be 24/7 365
they are done.Reall time will be absolutely huge
in 2010. Let's get the news in real time in all
categories. Drop the crawl and have real time
news as it comes in and have the anchors and
the reporters, producers & writers keep things
fresh. But first and foremost please give those
pesky pundits very little face time. There are
times when the crawl is 2 days old.I am with
having a supporting cast. Take for example
Josh Lev or Nicole Lipan have them give us
the news form the web and social media in
real time each hour. Also global news updates
every hour, the latest video,etc.

You guys might want to take a look at the list
on HuffPo about the cable news rankings. It
made we wonder where CNN would be if it was
not for the slide in recent months. For the first
time 360 is the top CNN show in the demo for
an entire year. The problem is that is the last
three months the ratings have not been that
great. Personally, I think it is do to the political
promo for 360, it is supposed to be a news
show which strangely never is mentioned in
the promo. How can you not have the word
news in a 360 promo. Words matter.

CNN does realize that you don't need Rick
Sanchez to connect you with people on
Twitter, that is the purpose. You don't
need Rick Sanchez for access to other
reporters you can already follow them
on Twitter.

TVN has the numbers for Candy. She was
second in viewers and demo topping Rachel.

I like CNN Tonight. Looking at the data it
seems that Wolf's ratings go down at 6.

Why not have a new show at 4 before John
King? Maybe it is just be but I think CNN
could be a good program to work with.

Happy New Year to all. I think we have to
wait until 3 weeks into the next decade to
see where CNN is going. Maybe it is up or
down. Let's hope the numbers get better
in prime time.

@12:19PM: I don't know where you were looking on Huffpost, but the chart you referred to had LKL as the top ranking show for CNN in all categories. It always was and in the demos as well.
I too think the crawl is a waste, especially if CNN fails time and again to refer to it. You catch half of something and the idea was to keep the viewer updated.
CNN IS taking a good look at HLN, because Behar seems to be gathering strength in her numbers as well and Rachel Maddow is also performing quite well.
This all adds up to a whole lot of "female" viewing and females and I am one, seem to respond to other females....especially smart females who know what they're talking about. Not those who babble for the sake of babbling, like the VIEW.

According to a recent TVNewser chart for the years end, FOX NEWS gained something like 540%. This in itself is news because everyone who watches is not conservative.
Whether you dislike them or not, and I do because they are not fair or balanced, they are fast moving. Their pace is far better than CNN's, no matter what they're speaking about. CNN spends too much time rehashing the SAME thing over and over. Unfortunately, FOX has learned that most viewers, especially theirs, have the attention span of a flea, so movement is very important. CNN would do well to start looking at exactly what makes FOX tick and STUDY their competition. "We're keeping our friends close, and our enemies closer," should be their new slogan for 2010.
