HLN must have gotten blockbuster ratings
yesterday for Casey Anthony. Now all of the
networks are showing extended coverage.
TV by the Numbers has the ratings for Thurs.
CNN had better make changes before AM gets
under 200,000. Tom Foreman came close to
Lawrence O'donnell on The Last Word in the
demo. I'm starting to wonder if some of those
MSNBC viewers might be finding Countdown.
Sometime next week the June book ends and
we get some real numbers for the month. I
hope CNN is not considering moving PMT to
8 PM. I could be wrong but I'm not sure the
commitment is there for the show. 2 repeats
back to back in prime time on CNN. Is CNN
throwing in the towel or what ? CNN really
needs to put more effort into programming.
If CNN can make it happen, this would work :
A women's new show at 7 PM with the
female journalists at CNN. Cable news
it is time.
Hire Toure and give him the a brand new
show at 8 PM.
Hire George Stormbo and have him bring
his show to America for an hour at 9 PM.
Keep 360 in it's time slot. It is the only
thing CNN has going for it now.
Give Wolf Blitzer back his original time
slot 4-6 PM. Originally The Sit Room
was suppose to join old/new media.
Why was the format abandoned. Move
John King to 6 PM. John King is good
at his job he just needs a better time
slot. I say he beats MSNBC for the hour.
From 1-4 no 2 hour shows. It makes CNN
look repetitive. Maybe CNN could go with
an hour of international news, tech/new
media and CNN web stories for another
hour. Brooke Baldwin at 3 PM. Rename
shows with Kyra & Suzanne and make
them different from what they are now.
Retire the News Room name , too dull.
Try not to use the pundits. If you really
believe you have best political team of
reporters, how come they are not doing
some decent political reporting. CNN
would be more popular as the network
with no pundits. Is that radical change
or what. Personally, I would much rather
see writers and documentarians and
photographers and filmmakers and news
makers and artists, musicians and folks
who actually innovators and people who
actually do something other than talk.
Mindless chatter means nothing.
Don't know if this will happen. I am just
a CNN viewer but I know what I like and
don't like about the network. I'm not as
loyal as I once was because of some bad
shows. The quality is going downhill.
For quite some time I have said CNN really
needs a women's show. Cable news can no
longer afford to ignore women & minorities.
Women & minorities consume news in large
numbers. Are we suppose to believe that CNN
can't put a diverse group of female journalists
on each night. How about Erin Burnett, Alina
Cho, Isha Sesay & Jennifer Del Gardo and all
of the women at CNN. Make Erin Burnett the
permanent host but just rotate the rest of
the news team. I mean news no politics. The
Talk & The View prove that women will watch.
Minorities are now 37 % if the U.S. population.
and there is an aging white population. It is
only a matter of time before Nielsen moves
to the younger folks. Which means viewers
are more diverse than ever.
Sad news about Nick Charles. God bless
his family. I really miss the sports show
on CNN. He was one of the sportscasters
who got me interested in writing sports.
Just out of curiosity we decided to run some
so far numbers for the month of June as this
month is coming to and end next week. These
are from June 1-23.No numbers yet for Friday
or the coming week. There numbers come from
averaging the data from TVN and TBTN.
So far this month 360 is averaging 784,000
viewers with 270,00 in the demo. Will the
ratings go higher or lower? We will see soon.
Not sure if the numbers for 360 will count
for debate night but we included them.
PMT is averaging 610,000 viewers. Demo
is averaging 175,000. Not too good to for
CNN. Below 200,000 in prime time is a
disappointment. Will CNN try to stick it
out or move him to a different day or hr ?
Will he ever be able to catch Rachel or Sean ?
That is starting to look doubtful.
ITA is in big trouble. The show is averaging
456,000/135,000. Not good for the 1st show
people see on CNN in prime time. The pressure
is mounting on this one.
Guys don't forget about DVR's . 360 must
be a DVR fav because they always have the
banner on during the show. The reason we
say this is in response to Anon 6:04. That
lineup has DVR written all over it. Could CNN
actually find 1 more DVR show like 360 ?
CNN has got to play some defense and not
let 360 get dragged down by the other 2
prime time shows. We like Strombo because
we are those younger viewers he aims to
get to care about the news. Toure was once
on 360 and American Morning. Could be a
homecoming for him. It is going to be tough
to get a lineup like that. But who knows
maybe CNN can pull it off. Just let them
have the creative freedom with their shows.
Don't try to make the shows the same for
3 hours. Let individual style flow and if that
is not a lineup aimed at women we don't
know what is.
I agree that Wolf needs to be given his hour back...4-6PM.
Push Brooke Baldwin back one hour and keep pushing back the hours leading up to her.
There is no reason for us to see Randi Kaye for a two hour stretch.
I like her, but not as an anchor.
She is a good investigative reporter.
John King needs to be paired with someone else or give him his Sunday slot back. He was much better at doing Sundays and more interesting than Candy Crowley.
John traveled and liked ot take his show on the road.
Candy just sits there and speaks to one pundit after another.
I don't know if anyone would listen or even
care about what I am about to say but what
the heck.It is about 360 and how they can
possibly grow their audience.
Love the Ridiculist. Personally, I feel it is getting
viewers to stick around longer. Just think if there
was something at the beginning of 360 you can't
miss . It is that good. We all know that Anderson
is a gifted writer. I watch the show daily but not
always excited about the open. Take for example,
the NY same sex marriage vote on Friday. AC
would say : could you name the 5 states that
have legally recognized same sex marriages.
Connecticut,Iowa, Vermont and on. Well NY
is about to make the same sex marriage state
list and it is going to happen right before your
eyes tonight. Now 41 states say no not in my
state but have you gone dictionary lately and
looked up marriage. We all know about the
union of a man and woman legally. Right
under the primary definition there is another :
a similar long term relationship between
partners of the same sex.I not as skilled as
Anderson but I hope you see the point. Of
course, the segment is visually enhanced
with video/pictures, graphics, map with the
word no on the state that have those laws.
Also the animated list of states as Anderson
says each name the appear in the screen.
Please no banners until he is done with the
intro to the segment. All 360 segments
should be done in this fashion. I have 1
other thought on the 2nd hour that involves
Anderson, Isha & anyone on team 360.
Here is the other half of the other post about
the beginning of 360 and subsequent segments.
We all know that hour 2 is basically a repeat but
what if just like hour 1 you had something like
The Ridiculist to hang around for. To boost the
ratings for hour 2 how about a new segment
called News 4 U ( Fitz & The Tantrums Song ).
Why not use it as a theme song for the segment.
It is sort of like a game. Everyone must bring a
fresh item that has not been seen all night on
360 or CNN.It can be anything. It could be
video,book,play. band, interesting news items.
Something that people just discovered.
That's the idea. You have to format it into a
news story. I say bring Isha because there are
those of us who would like to see more banter
between Anderson & Isha. The chemistry is
great. They are the main ones but there are
a people behind the scenes that help 360
get on the air and it would be impossible to
do a show without them. Production crew,
studio crew, producers,writers, photographers,
graphic artists and on and on.
For example, this gem. First the Spongebob
theme song. Someone says, we all know the
cartoon but now Spongebob is getting some
scientific props. Some researchers have
actually named a species of mushrooms
after the cartoon character it is called
Spongforma Squarepants. Doesn't matter
that it's fungus and not sponge. This item
was actually on the BBC website.
Second, there are some turtles that bury
their eggs in alligator nests. Down in FL
scientists have observed red-bellied turtle
using alligator nests for daycare. They
think there might be a symbiotic relation-
ship going on here.
It makes it even better when you can
hook up with people related to the item.
I think CNN has reporters in FL. Boom
toss to the reporter or video or interview.
Couldn't agree more about the two shows all
day long on CNN. Gosh what is wrong with 1
hour shows. Strombo would be an interesting
move by CNN. Many people don't realize that
Tosh has bigger ratings for Comedy than Jon
Stewart or Cobert. If CNN could get some of
those Tosh viewers that would be gold. He
gets close to 3 million each episode.Viwers
seem to have already made up their minds
about Eliot Spitzer and Piers Morgan.
I like the idea of giving Toure a show on CNN. He used to have a segment on Good Morning America years ago but he moved to NBC. I read his tweets and think he has a lot to say, he's a smart guy and can be funny and would be an intriguing presence on CNN, imo.
Toure does have some awesome tweets
and he really is a smart journalist who
has a way with words. I think CNN is
thinking about what to do with In The
Arena & Piers Morgan. My guess is that
CNN will cancel In The Arena and try to
stick it out a little bit longer with Piers.
I have noticed some heavy promotion
lately for Piers Morgan. As if CNN viewers
don't already know about him.By now CNN
has to realize that Eliot Spitser and PIers
Morgan are not the future of CNN. Try
the women's show in the morning from
6-9 against Morning Joe.
Excuse me. "Try the womens' shows in the morning from 6-9 instead of Morning Joe?
Really? Is this a challenge you're giving us or a dare?
Why would anyone actually waste their time on anything CNN has to offer in the AM?
Their morning shows are futile and the viewership shows it with a mere 200,000 on average.
I can't imagine the low morale for poor Kiran Chetry.
She is the ONLY ray of sunshine on that set.
In fact, except for Kyra at 9, it is a very vast wasteland.
If Anderson Cooper wants something ridiculous for his Ridiculist, he doesn't have to look far according to TVN.
They have a Fox and Friends "Dance The Weather Mambo," video that they did on Friday.
Yes, if this is the mentality of "Fox and Friends" then they ALL need to be on AC's Ridiculist because it can't get more ridiculous than this show. What have they been drinking and in the morning yet!
CNN's Morning Show may be dull, but it hasn't come to complete stupidity.
Until CNN makes content/viewers the focus
of the network, the ratings will continue to
head south. Nothing that CNN is doing right
now is done with viewers in mind. CNN is too
concerned with their own employees and they
are completely leaving viewers out. What do
you want your viewers to walk away with
or experience while watching CNN on a daily
basis. CNN is failing miserably because they
are trying to sell personalities at the expense
of the product. You have to start with the
product, which for CNN is the news.We now
have a media smart public, they find out
really quick that the emperor has no clothes.
The days of media companies being able to
turn people like Piers Morgan into stars are
gone.CNN has to be the most tone deaf
channel on the planet. It is pretty hard to
miss the message from viewers. CNN they
don't like your programming. Can you hear
me now ?
Hi I am Anon 9 :26 & 11:06. I left off something
about the news game. You get points but you
can also include viewers who submit items. They
create avatars and compete against Team 360.
Now each day the public votes via the 360 blog.
Each week there is a winner and the winner gets
a prize like some 360 gear. Maybe they can go
with the morning comic strips for he morning
news. Yahoo has them each morning. As you
can see these ideas are low budget and is just
me and the mac. I don't have Time Warner
millions but I am working on a new model
for the 24/7 news channels and for the most
part it is cost effective. All you need is a
dedicated staff committed to finding news
and cool stuff all day long. Got to get back to
a project I am working on right now.
Wonders never cease Marianna Van Zeller
was on CNN with Kyra Phillips. Could it
be they actually read this blog ? Now if
only the would hire Van Zeller and the
rest of the Vanguard journos.
The Ridiculist is a fun way to end 360. Love it.
As someone who is familiar with CBC News,
Strombo's show is a part of the news and is a
news show. Mark Kelley started about 2 years
ago and is relatively a new show but he has
been at CBC for years. Not sure why the cut
it down to 30 minutes but it is a good news
show and could give CNN a ratings lift.
It would be awesome if we could actually see
Toure and Strombo on CNN in prime time but
only one person can make this happen.CNN
does have a problem. It is going to be hard to
attract new people to CNN. It kinda looks
like a sining ship right now.
That would be Jeff Bewkes and how much
money and effort he wants to put into CNN.
Bewkes was the head of HBO for years and
turned the channel into the powerhouse that
it is these days. He knows good television
when he sees it. Now as the head of Time
Warner would he be willing to spend the
money to actually fix CNN before it is too
late. Being CNN is running out of time to
reverse the fortunes of a once great network.
The current prime time lineup is just not
working. Someone has got to start making
some big decisions about CNN. If there
are going to be changes they need to be
able to hit the ground running the week
after Labor Day. July and August is when
viewers tune out in large numbers. I don't
know try the news game, whatever during
the Summer and see if it works. I would
be interesting in participating if it happens.
IMHO Suzanne Mealveaux is the best dayside
anchor CNN has. CNN could take some simple
steps to improve things like right now. Make
sure all video is full screen. Whenever you have
a graphic or question on screen drop the banner.
CNN has to do something about clutter. Which
one are we suppose to read. If you drop the
banner during the touch screen segments, you
can make the screen more visible. Slowly phase
out the crawl. Replace it with clips from CNN
dot. com. The crawl is contributing to lazy
journalism. Create a news grid that shows
stories with just one sentence over the pics,
like the CNN website. Use this in and out
of commercials. I am not a big fan of politics.
But if CNN is going to cover politics how
about local reporters and blogger in Iowa.
I am sure the states and cities have local
media and people who are close to the
situation on the ground. Have them on
instead of the pundits. Unless a guest can
add something to the plate don't put them
on . Pundits are displays of laziness.
Personally, I can't see how CNN Management can ignore a blog like this.
We may not always agree, but we all agree that there is something very wrong about content and programming and scheduling.
When CNN wanted to listen they had someone reading this blog and ATA.
They must start doing this again.
We are their viewers and we know what we like and we don't like what we are seeing.
How clear can we make this!!
