CNN to Host Final Debate Ahead of Crucial South Carolina Primary
John King to Moderate Jan. 19 Face-Off; Blitzer, Cooper, Burnett, O’Brien, Crowley Anchor from Charleston
On Thursday, Jan. 19, just two days before the highly anticipated primary election in South Carolina, CNN and the Southern Republican Leadership Conference (SRLC) will present a presidential town hall debate live from the North Charleston Coliseum. The two-hour debate will begin at 8 p.m. ET and will be moderated by CNN anchor and chief national correspondent John King. Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, Erin Burnett, John King and Soledad O’Brien will anchor their respective programs live and on-location in Charleston on Thursday. Then, on Saturday, Jan. 21, the anchors will be live beginning at 6 p.m. from the CNN Election Center for America’s Choice 2012: South Carolina Primary. A special edition of Anderson Cooper 360° will air at 11 p.m. followed by a special live midnight edition of Piers Morgan Tonight. Candy Crowley will report from South Carolina throughout Saturday evening and will anchor State of the Union on Sunday, Jan. 22.
Reporting from the field in the days leading up to the debate and primary in the Palmetto State will be national political correspondent Jim Acosta, senior congressional correspondent Dana Bash, CNN Radio Capitol Hill correspondent Lisa Desjardins, senior political correspondent Joe Johns, anchor Don Lemon, and national correspondents David Mattingly and Gary Tuchman. On the trail with the GOP candidates are reporter-at-large Peter Hamby, political producer Rachel Streitfeld, political reporter Shannon Travis and South Carolina-based political producer Shawna Shepherd.
The following five presidential contenders will participate in Thursday’s debate: former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. In addition to questions posed to the candidates by King and southern Republicans in the audience, CNN will solicit questions and comments submitted in real-time from CNN.com, the CNN Politics fan page on Facebook and by using the #CNNDebate hashtag on Twitter.

In the days leading up to the South Carolina primary, CNNPolitics.com will be the online destination for all news and analysis related to the 2012 Elections. New for the South Carolina primary, CNN has launched the GOP Delegate Calculator. After each caucus or primary, users can try their hand at predicting which candidates will win each state and eventually, the Republican presidential nomination. CNN.com will also provide a CNN Electoral Map with the most recent predictions on battleground states as updated by CNN’s political experts as well as the 2012 Primary Caucus Calendar, an interactive datebook where users can slide over a specific month to see when states will hold their primaries and caucuses throughout the year.
On the day of the primary, CNN.com will live stream the events in South Carolina and live blog the night’s developments. As the primary results come in, users will be able to track them in real-time at the CNN Election Center. To engage and comment on election night news as it happens, users can view the CNN Politics Facebook page for political stories and photos of CNN’s favorite faces and also follow @CNNPolitics on Twitter for breaking developments all night.
CNN iReport, the network’s global participatory news community, will be asking for submissions related to the South Carolina primary, some of which will be shown on CNN.com and broadcast on CNN.
Across CNN’s mobile platforms, the latest election stories and opinion pieces will be available via CNN’s mobile website and on the CNN apps for iPhone, iPad, Android phone and Android tablet. The new Election Center section can also be accessed on CNN’s mobile platforms. Additionally, all apps will carry live video of candidate speeches and events. On election night, live results can be viewed on CNN's mobile website and in the CNN App for iPad.
CNN en Español and CNN International
Starting at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, CNN en Español anchor Juan Carlos López will be joined by the network’s team of political contributors Maria Cardona, Roberto Izurieta and Juan Hernandez for pre-debate analysis. At 8 p.m., CNN en Español will take the debate live with simultaneous interpretation followed by 30 minutes of post-debate analysis.
The debate will also be carried live on CNN International.

While many here are critical of John King, I am not.
ReplyDeleteHe has much skill in moderating and knows everything there is to know about politics and the key elements that make up a good debate.
I don't think his show should be canceled.
He may do better in the field once the weather is nicer.
He's been moved around too much and has not been given a far chance to grow a loyal audience.
Remove Erin for good and give Wolf back his three hours and put John on at 7PM again.
Erin does far worse than John at that hour.
Could SHE be given the responsibilty of ever moderating a debate? Never. So there's your answer as to who should go and never be missed.
The only skill she has is acting cutesie.

ReplyDeleteBut instead of given Wolf back that third hour, think we should have a real international news program from the CNN International journalist. They have such quality people working over there, yet we aren't given the opportunity to view their work daily.
And Erin Burnett is an accident that keeps on happening.
2:23 ^ That is a great idea. There is some great talent at CNNI and I would love to see a good international show. John King is a real pro and I think his show could use some retooling but CNN is making a mistake by bumping him for Burnett.

to drop the crazies. Will Cain thinks the cruise
ship crashed because the captain is Italian.
Where does CNN find these people. Cain is so
into stereotypes . He made these comments on
Starting Point.
John King did a good job moderating the debate but he should have slipped that question in, after other questions were asked.

If John had not opened with Newt's
wife's allegations, the audience would have been less enthusiastic.
Attacking the press is the elephant in the room, not the personal lives of these four less than capable wannabees.
In fairness to John King, none of the CNN

down to CNN's overall political coverage.
Everything is ideological, lefts vs right.
That act is getting old. Like Morning Joe
CNN should be elevating the political
conversation. In many ways CNN is very
divisive and mean. Once CNN announced
the people hired to appear with John King,
people didn't like it . CNN is doing the very
same thing to Soledad. The questions that
Jack Cafferty and Carol Costello ask each
day are not helping. Who really responds to
loaded question on TV these days. Everyone
knows that CNN posts question during a
certain time of the day. They are not really
watching CNN. They just take to the internet
to dumb down the conversation.
Without a doubt this is the best debate of the

questions. It was a pro Republican crowd so
John King was in a just can't win situation. john
King handled himself well.
The ratings are going to be through the roof
for the debate, 360 , and the debate repeat. CNN
is likely to have some really big numbers. The SC
primary likely won't have big numbers it is on a
Saturday and the SC debate is a tough act to
follow.
John King is 1 of the top searches on Google. So

himself last night. CNN needs to follow many more
news items this Friday as well. The Megaupload
story is big. Swizz Beats who is the CEO is in the
music industry and he is being investigated. DOJ,
FBIm RIAA websites are under assault by hackers
Anonymous. Plus Red Tails comes out today. CNN
needs to try to interview George Lucas. He told
Colbert Hollywood would not fund the movie
because it is was a film project with black actors.
It is 2012 and that is the mentality in Hollywood.
There is also the Sarah Burke death. She is the
pioneer of freestyle skiing. Where is the story
on this type of sport. as well and the head
injury that claimed her life. She was induced in
a coma. So what happened. Then there is the
mystery woman and the captain of the cruise
ship that crashed in Italy. The ship is going
to completely sink. I'm just saying there is a
whole bunch of news today so I hope that 360
is just not all debate tonght. We got that last
night. The best moments of the debate are on
the internet so we have all seen the highlights.
You don't need to do 30 minutes on debate.

CNN can't move beyond left vs right and it makes
them look bad and not worth watching.
Erin Burnett is sinking. The show is awful. Piers
Morgan mumbles so you can't understand what
he is saying. Why wasn't Charlie Rose on the CNN
radar. CNN was dumb enough to seek out Piers
Morgan A slickly edited tape from Simon Cowell
does not make it real. CNN got duped big time.
Memo to CNN : stop trying to make Erin
Burnett and Piers Morgan news people. They
have no business doing news on CNN.
