ReplyDeleteCNN Feb 2012, minus the ratings for Friday.
4 days remain so the numbers will change
with primaries in Michigan and Arizona next
week. TVN is the data source. Before the week
is done it is on to March 2012.
360 is averaging 556,000/184,000 at 8 PM
ED is averaging 1,022,000/231,000
BOR is averaging 2,951,000/599,000
It will be interesting to see who is up and
who is down. This week was a little strange
for FNC. Instead of BOR being 3 million plus
at least 1 day of the week he was under 3
million plus each night. CNN might be up
a little in the hour. Same goes for MSNBC.
Can 360 pull off a demo win in 4 days ?
Last time around FNC & MSNBC went with
their regular shows but worked in primary
results . Let's see if CNN will do that with
360 at 8 & 10 PM. It would boost ratings.
360 is averaging 709,000/265,000 at 10 PM
TLW is averaging 960,000/250,000
OTR is averaging 1,696,000/404,000
Let's see if 360 has a 2nd place demo finish.
No doubt boosted by Whitney Houston, debates
and primaries.
CNN is at 816,000/273,000 in prime time
MSNBC is averaging 988,000/252,000
FNC is averaging 2,206,000/493,000
CNN is at 452,000/144,000 in daytime
MSNBC is averaging 549,000/151,000
FNC is averaging 1,328,000/318,000
Those numbers might be down for FNC.
It is possible that MSNBC is getting stronger
in daytime. Not good for CNN.

The 5 is averaging 1,654,000/376,000

Both the 6 & 7 PM hours continue to be big
problems for CNN. We will be watching to
see if the situation improves in March 2012.
The end of March marks the end of Q1. With
3 months of data you can see where things
are trending.
PMT is averaging 674,000/219,000
TRMS is averaging 1,070,000/287,000
Hannity is averaging 2,077,000/486,000
Rachel is having a very good month. That
is benefiting ED. Out Front is not working
as the lead-in for 360 The Hardball replay
is getting much larger numbers.. We are
wondering if Out Front is heading towards
under 400,000 on a permanent basis, 360
will never gain enough for 2 hours of losses.
MSNBC has a strong lineup for hours. 360
is doing better than previous shows on CNN
and does increase from Out Front. It is a
slow growth and those totals do need to rise.
360 at 10 is still the top show on CNN, nothing
new there. With a couple of primaries for the
upcoming week CNN could see a rise in those
prime time ratings and 360 will get more of a
bump at 10 PM.
We are keeping an eye on the ratings for
8-11 PM. There are things to keep an eye
on. Is the little dip for BOR for real ? Can
Rachel Maddow continue the hot streak. Will
360 or TLW flip the demo at 10 if Greta gets
under 400,000 in the demo. What will things
look like for FNC if BOR loses 100,000-
250,000 in viewers ? What will the ratings
race look like between CNN and MSNBC for
March 2012 ? Oh the drama.
All are crunching the numbers and waiting for
the ratings next week to write the final
paragraph for Feb 2012. Game on for March
2012. Will CNN be ready ? Once March kicks
in we will start keeping an eye on Starting Pt.

CNN has to get out of the mindset that only
ReplyDeleteideologues are contributors. MSNBC takes a
more balanced view. That is how they found
Chris Hayes, Ezra Klein , Rachel, Prof Harris
Perry. Alex Wagner & Toure. Why did CNN let
Rachel & Toure get away. Both first appeared
on CNN. CNN cheats viewers by subjecting
them to ideological pundits. It ends up being
about talking points and nothing of substance.
Henry Blodget at Business Insider would have
had a much better conversation on gas prices
for 360. Pundits just don't work with KTH. At
least go to break after the presentation to
keep the segment factual and apart form the
opinions of pundits. CNN was doing the same
thing 20 years ago. In other words, nothing
has changed and CNN seems outdated with at
24/7 parade of left vs right. Yawn.
I have no problem with CNN hiring George
Stroumboulopoulos, Aisha Tyler and Mark
Kelley. All would be improvements. Arwa
Damon was on Mark Kelley's show last week
talking about Syriia. Ali Velshi is on Strombo
this week. I am 100 % sure that CNN is
aware of these CBC hosts. They permit their
talent to appear on the network.
However, at the same time CNN has to work
on content, story- telling, journalism. Current
TV is a real mess right now but they have the
best doc series on TV called Vanguard. Kaj
Larsen was an original member. Hire the
others : Mariana Van Zeller, Christof Putzel
& Adam Yamaguci.
That new brand of journalism has to become
a part of CNN. You have Amber Lyon as well.
Laura Ling was the brains behind Vanguard.
There was also Derrick Shore and Rawley
Valverde.
When comes to contributors CNN is lacking.
It is too narrow minded . Hire someone like
Jay Smooth at Illdoctrine. Dude is right there
in NYC his latest video on Mitt Romney is
so funny. Brett Erlich is being underused at
Current TV on War Room. He is good at
political satire.
There are 3 others who were once at Current
who create media. They are : Conor Knighton,
who appears on Sunday Morning, Max Lugavere
& Jason Silva. Can't Mo Rocca appear on CNN
or Angela Sun as a sports contributor of Douglas
Cabellero as a music contributor. CNN needs
a creative explosion. They have to start hiring
people who can create must see content and
know how to create content for the masses.
CNN has some of the world's best journalists.
Why are they not hiring modern day journos
to strengthen the brand and increase news
content. You don't get much out of pundits
but you can get a lot out of content that is
multi-platform and interesting. Seasoned
journalists and new journos would be a
great mix for CNN. At it's core CNN has to
be about news not opinion.
Heck hire them to be on with Soledad in the
morning. She could use some fresh talent
and different styles. CNN is too cookie cutter.
Every show does the same things.
Music is also a way to connect with viewers.
I have noticed that MSNBC is now doing this
for all of their shows. That is also another way
to engage viewers.
I don't have a problem with pundits on TSR,
SOU or John King but they should not be so
prominent on news shows.
According to TVN, CNN had Melissa Harris-Perry
ReplyDeleteon their network first. Is CNN really that bad at
seeing talent. Obviously, someone at MSNBC was
watching CNN. They also have Thomas Roberts,
Richard Lui and Veronica De La Cruz. CNBC had
Nicole Lapin for a little bit. CNN has also lost TJ
Holmes. Betty and Erica are now at CBS.
CNN seems to have more paid contributers on staff than actual reporters.
ReplyDeleteCNN certainly would not have given Harris-Perry the opportunity she has been provided at MSNBC. CNN is in the business of entertaining rather than informing.
You have some very strong, smart and truly fantastic female hosts at MSNBC. Something I find extremely rare at CNN.
CNN has a women's issue that is not going away.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Aisha Tyler would fix that. She does get
press for being smart and witty. It is sad to think
that neither that someone like MHP would not be
given a shot at CNN. That is exactly why CNN has
a talent deficit CNN keeps going for a certain type
and that is unfortunate.
Starting Point needs to be doing a better job with
facts. Soledad had someone on from the WSJ who
gave out wrong info on Brent Oil. It is not $126.
So no one at Starting Point thought to tell viewers
the price of oil before the segment began. WSJ
has endorsed Republicans and that was an attack
on Obama that was silly. So far today brent is
not even at $ 125. Nobody has mobile internet
access to follow the news ?
Looks like things will be back & forth between

to MSNBC. Wonder what happens in March. Given
the schedule this week in cable news, CNN might
get demo over MSNBC in prime time. I was once
a huge fan of Current TV. Loved all of the people
you named. You have to wonder what heights a
show like Vanguard could reach with a network
like CNN. Marianna is my favorite. I like that they
go to places and cover stories that is ignored by
CNN. It would breathe fresh life into CNN. I
watched Max & Jason, Conor on Infomania too.
I would much rather see people like this as
CNN contributors. They can go out and get CNN
original content. Pundits can't deliver that. CNN
has to find ways to get viewers excited about
the news on CNN. Don't mean to sound mean
but it just does not look believable to see Erin
Burnett with the camera. Christof Putzel, Adam
Yamaguci, Mariana Van Zeller,Max Lugavere &
Jason Silva, Angela Sun, Conor Knighton and
the others were really good with the camera
and they all have some skills. Would love to
see Brett Erlich on TSR with Wolf Blitzer. All of
these people would give CNN a better shot at
younger viewers than Erin Burnett.
Unfortunately for CNN, MSNBC has found the
ReplyDeleteOprah of cable news. However, she is on MSNBC
on weekends not prime time. Would CNN make
a bold move with an Aisha Tyler at 7 PM or a
George Sroumboulopoulos at 9 PM ? Not only
no but hell no. The only contributors you will
ever see on CNN are tea party, Beck & Breitbart
employees. While CNN was so busy catering to
right wing extremists, MSNBC came up with at
game plan. MSNBC has elevated the conversation
on cable news with shows like Morning Joe, TLW
Rachel Maddow, the professor and Chris Hayes.
At the same time CNN gave us PMT, Out Front,
Early Start/Starting Point and In The Arena. It
is game over for CNN. MSNBC has leadership
and a vision to see the bigger picture.

reads. A Harris poll finds that Diane Sawyer,
Anderson Cooper & Brian Williams are the top
3 favorite current affairs personalities.
The really big news is that CNN is shaking up
things dayside.IMHO it is a disaster. American
Morning tanked because of Ali Velshi, Christine
Romans and Carol Costello. CNN decides to
let Carol Costello anchor solo for 2 hours .
Why ?
Looking at the ratings posted here it is clear
that CNN has to make changes but putting
Carol Costello on from 9-11 AM will be a
disaster. Her voice is so annoying. It is a
complaining, whiny tone. That is also a part
of the problem with Erin Burnett. Mark my
words CNN will dip below 400,00 thousand
viewers for daytime and drop below 100,000
in the demo. FNC & MSNBC don't have to do
anything but to sit back and watch CNN crash
and burn.
