CNN is #1 International News Channel in EMS Middle East survey
- CNN outstrips all competitors on monthly, weekly and daily reach- Al Jazeera English manages distant second place
- CNN outscores all international competitors, including non-news
CNN has comprehensively beaten its English language rivals in the latest EMS Middle East survey, confirming its position as the single most watched international channel in the region – just weeks after it was also named the number one international news channel in Europe.
CNN decisively outperforms every international news and entertainment channel across every metric.
At 33.4% the network’s monthly reach is more than double that of its nearest English language competitor - Al Jazeera English, with 15.5%. Discovery follows, with 13.1%, while BBC World News trails in 4th place with 13%.
At 21.3% CNN’s weekly reach outstrips Al Jazeera English (10.5%), BBC World News (9.2%) and Discovery (8.3%).
At 11.5% its daily reach is far ahead of BBC World News (7.0%), Al Jazeera English (4.3%), and Discovery (3.2%).
CNN is also the number one cross-platform international commercial network, reaching 41.5% per month of the EMS Middle East universe when combining TV & online.
Tony Maddox, Executive Vice President at CNN International, said: “To achieve double the reach of the nearest competitor in the Middle East puts CNN in a league of its own, and we thank our viewers for their loyalty. Certain players in this region may feel they have a head start on CNN, but audiences across the Middle East are making it crystal clear that first-rate journalism is what matters. Audiences here not only trust us to follow the extraordinary stories unfolding on their doorsteps, but also to deliver them a true account of the news from every corner of the world. We’ve made a great commitment to our news gathering, both in the Middle East and internationally, and these results show – in no uncertain terms – the value of that investment.”
Rani Raad, Senior Vice President, Ad Sales and Business Development at CNN International, added: “Our major production hub in Abu Dhabi, our regional programming, and the dedicated output of CNNArabic.com underline a genuine connection to this region that is really striking a chord. CNN invented 24-hour international news, and our commitment to high-quality journalism is greater than ever. With double the reach of our international rivals, there is no doubt that audiences here understand, appreciate and engage with that.”
CNN International also leads the non-commercial public service broadcaster BBC Arabic on daily reach, and CNN's reach is more than double CNBC’s combined reach across Arabiya and English, across all three metrics. CNN achieved 33.4% monthly, 21.3% weekly and 11.5% daily reach, while CNBC scored 17% monthly 11% weekly and 5% daily.
The results come just a month after CNN outscored all of its rivals in the EMS Europe 2012 survey. The network achieved a record score, adding more weekly and monthly viewers across Europe than any other news broadcaster* and achieving the best ever score for any news network in monthly reach, with 36.9% (18 million viewers)**. Overall, CNN was also the number one multi-platform news provider, with 47% monthly combined reach across TV, mobile, and online**.

Great news for CNNI. Not surprising since CNNI is much better than CNN domestic. Why don't they scrap CNN and just replace with CNNI? I have a couple caveats - many of my CNNI viewer friends aren't particularly happy with the simulcast of OutFront and Piers Morgan Tonight. But a few hours of bad American programming is a small price for otherwise good international coverage.
I totally agree that CNN International should just go ahead and replace CNN USA. It is so much better! The only anchors that should move to CNN International are Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper (who are already on there from their American shows, but should develop new shows that would air during the United States prime time hours). CNN International still simulcasts live coverage of every major political event in the United States, so why not?
So envious of those that get CNN International. They have great anchors and correspondents something lacking at the US version of CNN.
@10:17 and @1:15
I think it would be GREAT for CNN International to take over CNN USA. Maybe even relaunch and rename the network to INN? (International News Network).
If this did happen (never say never), then I think Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer would be great in primetime USA time, along with Hala Gorani and Isha Sesay. Maybe even Christian Amanpour? I like the idea of incorporating Wolf Blitzer from 7PM-9PM EST, Hala Gorani 9PM EST, Anderson Cooper 10PM EST, and Isha Sesay 11PM EST.
As a regular viewer of both CNN and CNNI I agree with you that it's generally hard to compare CNNI with CNN US in terms of depth and quality, but these results they occasionally publish should be taken with a pinch of salt. There's more PR here than any real data cause you can't actually measure global ratings.
Long time viewers will remember that just until a few years ago CNNI was a real rolling news channel, there was maybe two hours of tape in the course of 24 hrs. Today, it's a completely different story. They still have some great programs such as Iinternational Desk with Hala Gorani, but there are also gaps of up to 5 hours with no live news at all, which can really be frustrating. They also started lagging behind the competition in breaking news. Anyone with access to BBC World and Al Jazeera can confirm that. I'm not writing this to imply CNNI is bad, but there's often this myth in the US about CNNI being the greatest of them great, when it in fact isn't. Yes, they are earning a lot of money as of late, but not from news, rather from various feature and sports programs. Anyone watching can confirm you there are more commercials around their specialized sports shows than around Hala Gorani's International Desk.
But, with all the downsides, CNNI's programming schedule is to a large extent still driven by news, not by ratings (cause there's no data). That would change if it was to replace CNN US. That's why I think it would be better for CNNI to become more widely available on US cable and CNN US should find its own way back to fulfil Ted Turner's vision of informing America 24 hrs a day.
CNNi is far superior than it's sister network CNN US, no comparison.
Agreeing with Anon 4:46PM CNNi has changed. Live news has decreased and too many feature shows have been added.
The feature shows however are quality shows. They are about people and cultures and are very educational. There are just too many feature shows. But CNNi still means quality and has first rate anchors and reporters arguably better than BBC and AJ. The better anchors and reporters sometimes equalizes CNNi to its competitors that clearly have more live news shows.
CNNi is smart and while its sister network CNN US is entertainment, court tv and fighting pundits.
Also agree with Anon 4:46 Hala Gorani International Desk is a great program.
