Your Views On The News March 5, 2010

ATC's readers have questioned Jon Klein's decisions from time to time......ok constantly. TV Guide Magazine posed some questions to Klein that might clarify why he does what he does.
I thought this might make a good starter for our Your Views on the News discussion.

So why isn’t CNN U.S. president Jon Klein worried? He thinks his channel’s straight-ahead news coverage has become more valuable as his competitors draw viewers with opinion. “Last year was our most profitable year ever,” he says. “We’ve doubled our profit just in the last four years by being the only reliable provider of TV news day in and day out, online and internationally.”
Noting that CNN’s 2009 prime-time audience was higher than it was in 2005, Klein says his network has not been hurt by FNC, which he believes is in a different business with its partisan personalities. “We cover the news,” he says. “They are about fomenting outrage. They do it very well. Their viewers stay longer. That’s about a state of mind.” (A Fox News Channel spokesperson said: “We don’t respond to presidents of fifth-place news networks. The last time we looked, Jon was losing to the Weather Channel, so call us back when he and CNN regain relevancy.”) Fox News points out that its regular news programs also top CNN by wide margins.

I couldn't resist highlighting the response from Fox, sadly it is so true. To read more just follow the link.

  1. CNN will always be a moneymaker but they
must do something about AM, Rick, Ali and
Campbell.I think people need to understand
just how wide a reach CNN has. Most companies
do not like politics it is not good for selling
products to a very diverse group of people.
There is no doubt that CNN is a channel that
can make millions off of the news regardless
of the ratings.CNN is a brand all by itself.
Until they lose money Jeff Bewkes could care
less about the ratings.I don't believe that is
likely because CNN has multiple platforms.
Ratings are not always equal to profits.
If that were the case there would not be
all of those channels on cable or satellite.
Plus CNN does not have a network, which
was topped by cable for viewers last year.
I've posted it here before it is about money.

  2. If CNN were making the money Klein claims their making, everyone wouldn't be jumping ship. Now we learn of Christiane Amanpour...in talks with another prime network.
While I appreciate the article what can be told to a TV Guide reader. They look at the pictures, like Berney Madoff.

  3. "All those channels on cable or satellite," are profitable! Some are even more profitable than basic family cable.
Ratings are ALWAYS EQUAL to profits or TVNewser wouldn't post them and everybody wouldn't be so keen on looking at them.

  4. That data provided by TV Newser is not the
full picture. It is a part of the puzzle.I can tell
you this CNN is not losing any money on the
ratings and the article in TV Guide says so,
did you see the comment from a competitor.
This is not the only data that is used by
companies when deciding how to spend ad
dollars. There are 18-34 yr olds and the
ad peoples dream audience 18-49 and on
and on. When it comes to the television biz
TV Guide and TV Newser are not in the
same league.TVG knows the industry inside
and out, they are not in the same league.
People are not leaving because of finances,
it has more to do with the work environment
and they see a once serious news channel
becoming a dumbed down version of nothing
of value. Look I think Klein should be shown
the door, but unless CNN starts losing
millions they are in no hurry.I can tell
you this ratings does not equal ad rates.
There is CNN domestic, HLN, CNN I
    and CNN.com.CNN and CNN affiliates
all across America, Just last month a
study showed that 20 % of people under
the age of 50 get the news on the go
with mobile devices. It is now just your
    tv anymore.

  5. One reason why CNN is is trouble is
the number of dumb mistakes being
mad on the air. Wolf had to apologize
for offensive language used on a graphic,
Where is the oversight ? This happens
over and over again with CNN. Does
anyone actually read the banners before
    they make it to air.

  6. CNN should start covering REAL NEWS... as simple as that! They have the best and largest resource in the business, but insist covering mostly US news as if nothing else was happening in the world... they should watch CNN INTERNATIONAL.

  7. Don't underestimate FOX network. They own American Idol and other money making projects. Roger Ailes is a genius and knows just how to use his muscle. What CNN should do is WATCH FOX.
CNN will one day be absorbed into prime news, as well as MSNBC. The same is not true for FOX. So why should CNN improve if it's just going to disappear or morph into something else?

  8. I don't call TVGuide the tome of all media. It used to be something people read to be in the know. Now it's just another glossy publication no one takes seriously.
It doesn't even cover the two most interesting news shows on TV which ALL anchors watch and fear, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Its show times only goes up to 10:30. Does everyone go to sleep then or is there something happening after that hour we don't know about?

  9. The FOX network and FNC are different
channels.I agree that CNN needs to start
doing real news and get rid of all of the
dumb chatter.i am wondering if Amanpour
is looking at ABC because of the way CNN
is treating Wolf Blitzer. That was just plain
wrong considering Blitzer was not down
in ratings a 4. Glen Beck might bring in
ratings for FNC but not a lot of advertisiing
money because they don't want their
    products associated with Beck.CNN
does not need to be FNC they need to
    be a real news channel.

  10. The skit on SNL said it best.CNN needs to
quit being so heavy on social media and use
some real reporters. Let's face it , that is just
lazy.CNN has got to start letting it;s reporters
file original stories from around the world,
The way CNN uses social media is not good
television. It looks bad and they need to do
    news.

  11. The way the ratings are trending it is only a
matter of time before MSNBC is also topping
CNN during the day.At some point someone
at CNN will understand that they can't just
throw junk on the air and expect for people
    to tune in and watch.

  12. This has to do with ratings and not CNN ratings perse.
TVNewser reported that the Oscars had its best year yet since '05 topping 41 million, from last years 36 million.
I'm one of the 3.1 million that lost reception because we were locked out by a fee dispute between ABC and Cablevision. Regular programming was resumed when things became "really ugly," according to local reports.
Having said this, I'm wondering if there was a general up tick in viewing because of this negative promotion.
The old saying, "You only appreciate something when you lose it," might apply here as well. Just a thought.

  13. If CNN calls itself the worldwide news leader,
how is it that they missed the news out of
Nigeria this weekend about violence leaving
    hundreds dead. Thank goodness Americans
now have access to a real news channel aka
    as the BBC news channel.

Management at CNN is just making some
really bad choices. When you hire someone
like Rick Sanchez at CNN you can;t expect.
for people to take you seriously are regard
your network as a source for intelligent news.

CNN don't you hear your viewers: we want
    real news.

  14. CNN should give us 2 hours of international
news Monday-Sunday. Having 4 hours of Ali
Velshi or Rick Sanchez is a waste of time.
Make a decision CNN. Are you a talk channel
    or a news channel?

  15. CNN can't even figure out what to do with
Campbell Brown. And you wonder why
they are in trouble. If you take a look at
the numbers on TV by the Numbers CNN
is in big trouble. Where is the leadership.

  16. If I see Steve Perry's face one more time speaking about education on 360, I don't care how much I like AC, I will NOT look at the rest of his broadcast.
Steve Perry is such a turn off, such a low life, turned an authority who most likely got his degree off the internet, and this is the best CNN can do??? I have written several negative e-mails and still that man appears. He appears because CNN doesn't care what their viewers think, and this is just ONE example, though there are many.

  17. Yesterday, CNN seemed to ignore the protest
in DC for health care reform.I guess since it
was not the Tea Party CNN can't cover it.To
me that is when CNN got in trouble because
they focus on the noise and not the news.

  18. Please CNN fire Jon Klein.

  19. No, but they CAN cover a thirty-five, forty year old show called "The Dating Game," on 360. I give up.

  20. There IS someone worse than Rick Sanchez, and his name is Steve Perry.

  21. Jon Stewart continues to be absolutely brilliant. His comment on Beck's/Messa show, when Glen said he was "sorry he had wasted one hour of your time," should be his new ending, every day!
