CNN.com Wins Online News Association’s Top Award for General Excellence

CNN.com garnered the Online News Association’s most prestigious honor for general excellence during the organization’s annual conference at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Sept. 13. The general excellence award honors sites that successfully fulfill their editorial mission, effectively serve their audience, maximize the Web’s characteristics and represent the highest journalistic standards.

The Online News Association, founded in 1999, has more than 1,200 members, including news writers, producers, designers, editors and photographers who gather and produce news for digital presentation.

“We are pleased that the Online News Association has honored CNN.com with one of its most prestigious awards,” said Rena Golden, senior vice president, executive producer of CNN.com. “We’re evolving CNN.com constantly to provide an experience in which articles, videos, images and user-generated content come together to give users a more enriching, immediate interaction with the news and information they need and want.”

The ONA cited CNN.com as “a site that made substantial changes in the past year, making it one of the more dynamic destinations out there. One that takes user content seriously and integrates it into the whole, opening a new era of networked content.” One judge predicted: “Everyone will copy it.”

CNN.com is the world’s No. 1 destination for online and wireless news, garnering the greatest share among current events and global news sites. Launched in 1995, CNN.com draws from the resources of CNN Worldwide and its many partners to provide consumers with the most enriching, immediate interaction with news anywhere, seamlessly combining articles, videos, images, interactive features and user-generated content. CNN.com’s news video offering – both live and on-demand – is unparalleled on the Web. CNN.com’s recent awards include an Edward R. Murrow award, a National Headliner award and three EPpy awards.
