Just one week ago, movie goers in a suburb of Denver, CO, were just settling in at a theater for a midnight summer blockbuster when it soon became clear that something was terribly wrong. According to witnesses, a masked, armored, heavily-armed man released teargas from the front of the theater, shot first into the air, and then began shooting randomly into the crowded auditorium with automatic weapons. CNN anchor Don Lemon anchors live updates each evening, with contributions from investigative correspondent Drew Griffin. They search for answers to the events of July 20, 2012, in Aurora, CO, speaking with survivors of that fateful evening, profiling the victims of the shootings, and revealing information about the suspect who now stands accused of killing 12 and wounding 58 people – while trying to determine if there may have been warning signs to the tragedy.

Jim Walton Leaving CNN in December

Jim Walton's letter explaining his decision to step down from his position as head of CNN Worldwide:

After more than 30 years at this company and nearly 10 years as the leader of this great news organization, I have decided to leave my role at CNN on December 31, 2012.

For some time, I’ve been talking with Phil Kent about wanting to make a change, and he supports my decision. I’ve told Phil that I will cooperate with any transition timeline that he and Time Warner want to implement. Phil requested that I work out the year and be available after that if needed, which I’ve agreed to do.

I am proud of what we have accomplished together over these last 10 years – innovative programming, the development of great talent in front of and behind the cameras, expansion in digital and mobile, significant investment and expansion in international coverage, financial success and, most importantly, great and trusted journalism. Thank you for the role you have played in our successes.

CNN needs new thinking. That starts with a new leader who brings a different perspective, different experiences and a new plan, one who will build on our great foundation and will commit to seeing it through. And I’m ready for a change. I have interests to explore and I want to give myself time to do it.

The next few months will be filled with election news and other important events that will require all of our focus to report the news with the quality and expertise the world expects of CNN. I look forward to working alongside each of you, as I have over the past 30-plus years, to do just that.

Jim

Turner Broadcasting's Chairman Phil Kent's statement:

“Jim is the leader we all aspire to be: Smart and steady, tough and fair, business-savvy and respected by his team, and with a track record of great judgment when it matters most. His vision has modernized and globalized our legacy news brand, enhanced CNN’s journalistic standing, positioned it at the forefront of multi-platform branded news content and challenged the organization to think bigger, reach further and do better. I am honored to work alongside him and proud to call him my friend.

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes's statement:

When Jim Walton assumed the presidency of CNN in 2003, it was underperforming and earnings were in serious decline. Since then, he and CNN have tripled earnings, doubled margin and delivered annual growth of 15 percent. In his nearly 31 years of uninterrupted and distinguished service to CNN, Jim has been instrumental in growing the business into the financial powerhouse it has become, while establishing the brand as the worldwide leader for television news. I respect him personally and professionally and support the decision he and Phil Kent have reached.

Ad Week Talks CNN's Plummeting Ratings

From Adweek.com on Monday:

CNN's Digital Power PlayHow CNN's viewers have embraced a converged world of TV and Web By Mike Shields

CNN has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons. “Worst ratings in 20 years” kind of reasons. But digitally, it continues to thrive, regularly approaching 60 million unique users. And to hear digital svp, gm KC Estenson tell it, CNN’s digital success may actually be the source of its TV woes.

Adweek: Even though your focus is digital, what can you say about CNN’s TV ratings?
Our audience is watching CNN in ways that are not detectable in the Nielsen ratings. We’ve long predicted a future with convergence between TV and the Web, and we’ve been setting ourselves up [for that dynamic]. We feel like we have all the right pieces to succeed in this converged world. It’s coming at the industry faster than anybody predicted.

What evidence do you have that your viewers are changing their habits so quickly?
If you look at the TV Everywhere numbers, we average 20 million minutes a month across the platforms. And CNN Digital generates 110 million video streams per month. And only about 10 [percent] to 15 percent of our Web video is original. It’s primarily TV content.

How has authenticated viewing affected CNN.com?
It’s hard to get a uniques number for TV Everywhere. We bundle all of that together as general mobile. Once somebody gets the live network, we see 30 minutes dwell time.

So, you’re saying that CNN viewers do watch CNN, just not on TV as much?
They’re tied to each other. No doubt. They are concentric circles. But our audience is 15 to 20 years younger [than our TV viewers]. If CNN.com does a billion page views a month, around 250 million are on tablets and phones. If you watch what happens among mobile users, you see more engagement. That’s changing the whole dynamic. As you map that against penetration rates, engagement will only increase over time.

Is that very different than the dynamic at Fox News, which dominates the TV news ratings?
When I see the ratings stories and I see CNN getting bashed on TV, there is a huge story being missed. Our viewers consume media in a very modern media way. The traditional model works very well for Fox. That’s not our audience. Our viewers are educated, affluent, sophisticated. They’re global traveling citizens. The story about this brand is that its consumption habits are leading-edge.

OK, but the big money is still in TV, where Fox rules.
Yes, the money has always been there. But if you look at Mary Meeker’s report, it’s just a matter of time. It’s moving faster in mobile. Twice as fast. I think for us, we have an integrated sales team that sells across all the platforms. There’s stronger monetization than what’s being speculated. The ad story is going to catch up. Sometimes when you’re on the leading edge, it takes a little while.

What about the suddenly crowded digital news category?
There are a lot of desperate moves happening. This thing is going to break into quality and scale versus the rest. Once AOL and HuffPo came together, that created a very big news player. Of course, Yahoo is the biggest, but we don’t really compete with them. ABC News was ranked No. 7 or worse in the category, so they had no other choice [to partner with Yahoo.] And MSNBC.com is a very complicated mess. They don’t play in the premium, integrated sponsorship space we play in.

ANDERSON COOPER 360° SPECIAL INVESTIGATION: CHARITY CHEATS?
CNN’s Anderson Cooper anchors a one-hour special that includes an investigation by investigative correspondent Drew Griffin on national charities that raise millions of dollars, but only spend a small percentage of those proceeds to help their cause. Griffin takes an in-depth look at three charities, including the National Veterans Foundation and the Disabled Veterans National Foundation, by examining each organization’s tax records and reported expenses. Griffin reveals that the three organizations in question share a common link to the New York-based Quadriga Art, one of the world’s largest direct-mail providers to charities and non-profits.

DR. SANJAY GUPTA REPORTS: BIG HITS, BROKEN DREAMS
Football rules at JH Rose High School in Greenville, North Carolina, but football glory has come at a cost for the players. In the fall of 2008, Jaquan Waller, a JH Rose junior, died from “second impact syndrome,” a fatal swelling of the brain that occurred when he took a blow to his head before his first concussion injury had healed. Just weeks later Matt Gfeller, a sophomore at Reynolds High School in neighboring Winston-Salem, NC, died from a single concussion. And in 2010, the J.H. Rose Rampants lost their star quarterback when his 6th concussion took him out of the game forever. Nationally, less than 40% of high schools have certified trainers – the key medical personnel who can help diagnose and treat injured players. CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta speaks with the coaches, parents and kids trying to learn how to prevent this danger in youth sports.
