According to your poll, this has been the weakest week for the 9pm hour, LKL and now we know why. Larry has been having his share of pesonal problems and it must be hard to engage others when you are dealing with matters at home. Having said that, maybe it's time for Larry to call it quits and hand it over to someone else. That person may not be as successful as Larry, but he's had a long run and a good one at that.
It is also depressing, that although AC360 is stronger than the other programming leading up to it, it still has not found a way to beat MSNBC on a continual basis and we aren't even touching FOX. MSNBC is also showing repeats of an original show that garners over l million viewers daily and they are loyal.
The 8pm hour is not Campbell Brown's fault. No matter who anchors, this time slot is not going to do well. Alternative programming here is needed.
I know Campbell takes a lot of flak, but in the end, no one can go against O'Reilly and fill this large gap, NO ONE.
I think Conor Knighton could be a good move
for CNN at 8. Infomania is a weekly look at the
media. If CNN would have Knighton do a daily
look at news and the media, I think it would be
a hit.I don't buy that at 8. Countdown & Nancy
seem to be doing alright. At 9 I say come up with
a news show for women.Go with the women at
CNN and CNN I , real journalists, the anchors and
reporters not the view. Have women of diverse
ethnic backgrounds and a jam packed news show
with music featuring songs about women or
songs related to the show.CNN needs a smart
news show for women without yelling. Make
the show fast paced and filled with interesting
tidbits that you might not have seen that day.
Cable news can no longer ignore women who
happen to be 52 % of the US population. The
time has come and this would be a great
alternative to Rachel, who is becoming more
popular than Keith because you can tell she
does her homework. The CNN show should
reflect this with items from newspapers,
magazines and books and culture( art/music)
and the news gathered during the day by
the journalists at CNN.Of course 360 would
finish the night for CNN in prime time.
Knighton could bring in 18-49 as well as
18-34 year olds. Of all of the news channels,
Current has the most subscribers for their
YouTube channel and CNN is a distant 2nd.
Rotate the women hosting the show each
night thus taking the spotlight off of a
single host that might not be connecting
with viewers.Of course Knighton would need
an anchor to do news cut ins. If there is
breaking news, you don't go with the
Knighton.CNN has to something. I happen
to think Infomaina is better than Jon Stewart.
I hope Jim Walton is looking for a replacement
for Jon Klein. CNN's ratings keep going south
and AC360 is the only show that seems to
gain viewers but it is not enough to overcome
the deficit in the ratings for CNN's other shows.
I would hope Walton already has someone in
mind who can step in rather quickly. It could
take more than a year for CNN to dig out of
this hole. Looking at those numbers overall,
it will be interesting to see if Rachel Maddow
will eventually top Hannity in the demo. She
is getting closer. the main reason I think her
show is blowing up is that it is nothing like
it on cable. It is intelligent, holds your
attention and makes you think.
I would like to see 360 get back to how they
originally did Raw Politics. You had Tom, Candy
and Joe summarize the day in politics. I say add
John King in the mix. They are all excellent
journalists and that should be highlighted more
than the pundits. Ir seems as though the pundits
are now sucking up too much air time on 360
and it is dragging down the show. You really
don't need pundit talk when you have journalists
like these. How many of us came to this blog and
wrote something about the raw politics segment.
That way it does not take up a chunk of time
that is quite boring and way too long. CNN
needs to become the journalist playground.
Let the journalists write, report and do their
own special brand of storytelling. Wether
they are anchors, reporters, producers or
photojournalists, etc. Please let them do
the news, This could also help turn around
TSR. Right now it is just Wolf and Jack and
that is boring. Perhaps if TSR would feature
more work form journalists form all of the
TW properties it would do better in the
ratings. They should really start highlighting
TIme magazine. Also, throughout the day
CNN should air some clips from CNN.com.
After the feature clip ends have a graphic
say for more news go to CNN.com . Drop
the crawl and go with real time news. It
just blows my mind that CNN does not
use Time more for TSR that is a perfect
match for the show.TSR is supposed to be
old and new media. Where are the internet
reporters? CNN please give us more news
and information. After all, television is
a visual medium, so please stop shooting
video off of a monitor. The video is getting
lost. It makes no sense to shoot video of
the volcano in Iceland off of the monitor.
Discovery channel mode full screen.CNN
really needs to stop interfering with the
video. It is just so annoying.
When did people the likes of Demi Moore, who has nothing to do with her time and her hubby, Ashton, become relevant and reporters no less? So what if they have a huge twitter following. Like Joy Behar says, "Who cares?" If you ask Rick Sanchez, he'd say he HAS huge twitter following. Does that make him an anchor? Does that make him credible? Half the population that watches NEWS, and I include myself in this category, doesn't need or want a twitter account.
Demi Moore is no substitute for a REAL HONEST TO GOODNESS REPORTER. The last time I saw her she was pregnant on Vanity Fair and married to "what's his face." WHO CARES what she thinks or where she goes. Half the population that doesn't give a "you know what about twitter." 360, THIS IS LAZY JOURNALISM.
@11:39pm: Nothing is BETTER than Jon Stewart.
I feel sorry for John King's program. He made a wrong move and its hit a real low according to TVN.
I hope CNN realizes he is a talent and doesn't give up on him. Dana Bash should have tried her best to talk him out of a one hour show. There's no one like John with the stats for politics.
If so many shows are tanking on this network, can't Jim Walton fire Klein? Isn't it time?
You make a good point about the monitors within a monitor. If CNN is going to report on the volcanic ash and show it, make it full screen, but this started with Netflix and their insistance on making every movie widescreen and it is really unacceptable. Consumers should stop buying DVD's that are not full screen. Really, this is a big problem and the industry should recognize, but instead WE CATER to them. It is our fault.
CNN really needs to get Rick Sanchez off of
the air; he did it again. This time with regards
to the volcano in Iceland. Yet again he is making
CNN look absolutely stupid.CNN is a joke.It is
making the rounds even ICN is talking about it.
How long will management put up with this,oh
I forgot. Jon Klein changed to solo anchors to
move Rick Sanchez from weekends. That clearly
is not working. The ratings are in for yesterday
and CNN is behind MSNBC in daytime viewers
for the 3rd consecutive day. I do feel bad for
John King, the ratings for his show keep going
down.CNN is incredibly weak these days and
prime time is not getting any better. I am not
sure CNN can afford to stick with Klein to fix
this. Just look at the damage he has done
already. You can't have him make any more
decisions about programs or anchors.
If Jim Walton is not looking for Jon Klein's
successor I would be stunned. I wonder how
long before we hear Jon Klein has decided to
pursue other interest apart from CNN.I think
the writing is on the wall and at this point
they are just trying to figure out how to best
handle the situation.I don't know who would
want the job because this person will have
their work cut out for them. I just hope it is
someone who is news oriented and has a
vision for CNN and at least have things
moving in the right direction by the end
of the year.
I made it a point to catch John King's failing show tonite and it wasn't bad...at least the part I viewed, wasn't bad. We actually got a close up of Obama's signature on his tax return and John analyzed the form, which seemed interesting enough. However, when we came to the end of the show, some unknown "guy," in the street sort of thing, attended the tea rally for John. This was poorly done. John King should be OUT AND ABOUT, doing that, not stuck in a studio.
Yes, whoever takes over Klein's job, has his work cut out for him, because every program is now a total horror show.
It is simple CNN less talk more news and original
reporting. Too often CNN is boring and seems
distant. People crave information and something
they may not know about. CNN has got to revamp
it's daytime and prime time lineup and fix the
content of the shows. Each hour should be like
time lapse video, progressing as the day moves
on.IMHO writers and reporters and photographers
are way more important than pundits. They are
people who actually get out and do something
and have to know what they are taking about
or they would not be able to do their jobs.
At least they should know what they speak
about or research the topic before talking.
Too often I find myself asking why are these
people on television. All they do is talk and
television is a visual medium. Unless the
people are relevant to the story don't use
them. Most people don't eat, sleep or breathe
politics. What makes CNN think I don't have
a clue about what I am seeing. I can think
and analyze for myself. That is way CNN ends
up being boring. Too much useless chatter.
CNN is not smooth it is clunky with graphics
covering up too much of the screen.I don't
like the way CNN looks on the air it is not
visually appealing. It is like look at this huge
set we have or look at the big screen we
have.I say even lose the CNN logo for graphics
so that none of the words are covered up.
It is not like I will forget I am watching CNN.
Every story needs to look like a mini doc
Just have the less intrusive CNN logo with
a media bar in place of the crawl. Yesterday
during the Sit Room, the crawl was running
old stories. If that is not a sign you need to
drop it, I don't know what is.I am waiting to
hear CNN is hiring reporters to replace those
who have left. It was a mistake for CNN's
first hire after losing 4 people was a blogger
named Erik Erickson and right away people
were being urged to boycott John King's show
I think that is what is hurting CNN. They let
people come on the air who just try and
mislead you and don't do anything to say
those are not the facts. They are so caught
up in left vs right, or this person says this
or that without doing any actual reporting.
The pundits have made CNN lazy when it
comes to covering the news. 360 should
have done a lot more on the volcano ash
and how it is affecting flights. There is a
pilot who was flying and had to get out
of the ash and that is a problem with CNN
these days.I say Rick and Ali both need to
go I can say without a doubt I know more
news and facts than those 2 and that is
scary when I surf the web and know more
about the news than the anchor. they are
behaving like circus clowns and CNN should
be ashamed. Bad decisions got CNN into
this mess.A few months ago someone wrote
an article about CNN not having anchors of
statue during the day. Klein's answer :
Ali & Rick for 4 hours.Klein has no clue
what to do and it shows on air.CNN needs
to be a 24/7 news channel just like the
internet and updating it's product every
15 minutes.
Well TVN has the numbers for last night and
Tavis Smiley gave Larry King his best numbers
in a while. People are watching to see if CNN
will ever let Don Lemon or TJ Holmes anchor
in prime time. Don's demeanor is perfect for
tv news and people seem at ease talking with
him. Let's face it TJ is Mr personality at CNN.
There is nobody there like him. Some people
think since they are based Atlanta CNN does
not want them in prime time since CNN is
out of NY in prime time.I think Tj would be
a great backup for Anderson. Hey is Tavis
Smiley got those numbers maybe Don Lemon
can do the same for CNN.
@8:02pm: I think you meant Travis Smiley and Don Lemon has a much nicer demeanor, than does TJ, IMHO, but both would be refreshing.
CNN seems to not want to be accountable to its viewership and does not want opinions from its viewers. If they did they'd be more willing to be cooperative and try different anchors in different time slots. They want us to think they have a handle on the situation and there is just so much we are willing to endure.
Last nite 360 repeated the exact same interview with "doctor death," that they had the nite before. Why? Do they feel the need to fill air time or do they think their viewership is stupid or both?
I thought Friday's 360 was the best all week
long. The show had an interesting mix of
stories and moved a little faster. One way
360 might get people to stick around for
an hour is to have a news question for
Beat 360. The first person to go to the blog
with the correct answer wins the tee shirt.
The trick is for 360 to never say when they
will post the question so you have to watch
the show because you don't know when it
will happen. At the end of the show have
Anderson say who won. The picture thing
is getting old.
It would be refreshing to see Don or TJ
on CNN in prime time. I am really enjoying
the morning with TJ and Kate Bolduan. This
is the best team since Betty left but Reynolds
is on this morning.TJ's personality just jumps
out at you and seems genuine. I like Don's
style as well.
For AC's new show format, after his interview, there should be some interaction with the audience in the style of a O&A on the topic.
Just watching an interview is going to be a bore, especially if it is a taped show. More viewers would show an interest if they saw real people asking AC real questions and then answering them.
For Anderson Cooper's new show format he must interact with the audience in the form of a Q&A on the topic that was discussed. If it's just an interview with a person on one topic, than it will be boring to watch, unless of course it is part of real Breaking News.
In this day of real time news, audience participation is more important than ever before and viewers at home, might in fact, have the same questions being asked by audience participants. This is all of course, whenever the show "gets started." Two dates have already been scratched and we don't know why.
It is a shame that we don't see more of Don Lemon and less CNN documentaries on the weekend. I did watch Don's school interview with the Education Secry. and it was done well because Don was there and focused and allowed the audience to participate.
He then did a weekend update and another Documentary was shown for the next two hours. Boring!
When will CNN realize what their talent brings to the table and not rely on "fillers?"
When will CNN NOT break up and interview, such as the one with Doctor Death, to fill air time for the next day. By the second day, one new phrase doesn't cut it and is misleading the viewer by saying, "More tomorrow." There was nothing more in the "Doctor Death" interview on Friday, nothing.
More Don please CNN!
Now that 360 has a wonderful promo showing AC in the field, HE ISN'T IN THE FIELD. Isn't that silly??
Management must give IQ tests and if you rate low, you get hired. What is wrong with them??
That promo should have been shown YEARS AGO. Now he's stuck to his chair like glue, interviewing silly people like Demi"Moron."
I would rather watch CNN.com or their You Tube
channel than the boring docs on the weekends.
Anderson does both as do all of the big 3
anchors.CNN should never had made political
promos for 360. That was completely wrong.
I agree about the education special with Don,
it was very informative and smart. I don't
understand why we have not seen the man in
prime time during the week. Both Don Lemon
& TJ Holmes are class acts.I am watching to
see if the weekend day numbers will top
CNN during the week.It seems to be getting
close.I don't expect for CNN's weekend prime
time numbers to go up, they have too many
repeat shows and are not live or at least
have fresh shows that have not aired yet.
If the shows are not doing that great,
why would run them on weekends.
CNN needs to do something about the 8 pm
hour. TV by the Numbers has the ratings and
Campbell is getting closer to 300 thousand.
CNN can't afford to wait for her to catch on.
