The numbers could even be higher for the
weekend. CNN has some amazing on site
reporting. Kyung Lah, Gary Tuchman, etc.
This marks the 3rd consecutive month in
which breaking news bailed out CNN. It is
about the news. It looks like Fox didn't get
much of a bounce. That has got to be good
news for CNN.

Anderson,Sanjay,Soledad,Gary and everybody
please stay safe. Just watching 360 and really
concerned about Sanjay and his crew. Also,
Anderson is near the nuclear meltdown and
an aftershock happened while they are on the
air.

360 was way too intense tonight. It was
definitely real time news and I was worried
for all of them.

Friday must have been really big for Team 360.
Greta is complaining that CNN is bragging about
ratings for a disaster.I'm also interested in how
Isha Sesay did anchoring the 2nd hour of 360.
CNN has the best coverage hands down. They
worked hard and earned the win.

I really miss TJ on AM. Maybe he can be live in
ATL & Kiran live in NYC. Just don't use the dbl
box. Find a way to make it work. Looking at the
numbers for Friday, AM had more than 50 % of
their viewers who were younger and it played
out all day long. AC had already been getting
younger viewers. The prime time deficit in the
demo of 400 thousand had to really shock FNC.
There is only a difference of 76 thousand viewers.
If I'm CNN , I'll take that. That is a sign that FNC
might have trouble growing outside their
viewer base. It is also a message to CNN. Try
going for some 297 million Americans who
don't watch cable news on a daily basis and
you will never get numbers like this with
politics or celebrities.

Have they already moved Anderson & his crew
out of Fukushiina. The nuclear situation seems
to be getting worse. I have a bad feeling about
this. I don't think they can contain it. There is
a report that some US Navy personnel have
been detected as having been exposed to
radiation.

Let's face it. So far in 2011 the 10 PM hr is
the big story. It is most competitive. Nothing
is really going on at 8 & 9. People have been
keeping an eye on the 10 PM hr. One thing
about 360 getting demos like this : it can
lead to more commercials and less news as
360 becomes the show that they want the
ads to run on instead of other CNN shows.
That is a lot of money for CNN. In the past
with big stories like the Japan quake/tsunami,
360 has topped BOR in the demo. Without
a doubt this will be a huge ratings week
for 360 and Greta needs to just deal with it.

I am glad for all of the 360 folks. They have
really stepped up with breaking news and
360 rocks these days. Keep up the good
work. Kudos.

I thought the tsunami coverage on AC360 Sunday was excellent. Fine work done by all the correspondents and really stunning footage of the tsunami. Anderson said he would be in Japan all week and I'm looking forward to the reporting.

Anonymous said...

Anon 2:31 I agree. I like that they are actually
letting you see and hear how events unfolded.
But please tell viewers that you are taking
precautions to keep everyone safe.

Anonymous said...

anon 3:22, I remember interviews with AC where he said he would never put his crew in harm's way - I think he's very careful and that probably goes for all of CNN's correspondents.

When Eliot Spitzer and Piers Moron get over 2 million viewers, you know the news in Japan is big.
MSNBC was the big loser last Friday staying with politics was not a good idea.
When actual breaking news happens, CNN is still the place to go to.
Having said that, why go to Piers Morgan, when he is so inferior.
Why not have Don Lemon sitting in for him at this time. I realize Piers is under contract, but he knows nothing about global news.
He's a British import that might as well have been traded for Rick Sanchez.

The NYPost is reporting that Larry King will be a contributor to the Daily Show, much like Lewis Black.
While I like Larry, and Jon likes Larry obviously, I have my doubts about whether this is a good fit.
But one thing is certain, Jon Stewart does not LIKE Piers Morgan...along with quite a few other celebs, and good for them.

Anonymous said...

CNN is right on target with it's coverage.
The story-telling, narration, natural sound
of the disaster as it happens and getting
out of the way when the video is powerful
enough to speak for itself. Wolf Blitzer is
a class act. He said Isha Sesay will be in
The Sit Room all week.

Looking forward to seeing Cooper, Gupta
O'brien, Tuchman and all of the CNN
reporters tonight on 360. Are they live
for 2 hours ?

Anonymous said...

Without a doubt, it is obvious that the news
brought in the viewers for CNN. Eliot Spitzer
& Piers Morgan have nothing to do with those
numbers.CNN is just trying to spike their
numbers. That is why they are letting them
do breaking news. Spitzer is 4th and Morgan
has become a distant 3rd. The news is the
star and that is what viewers want to see.

IMHO ALL 360 members should have been wearing protective covering
during their report tonite.
The Japanese themselves are uncertain as to the levels of radiation that are now being emitted from the facility, so why have the entire group in the same place, when officials are telling them of their concerns?? That made very little sense.
You don't expose an entire group of people to uncertainy just because of ratings....we all know that was the primary issue.

Anonymous said...

Fox News was smart.
Sheppard Smith was reporting from Tokyo, which was much farther away from the site of the nuclear facility. It seems to me they took the necessary precautions for their staff, with the intention of making up for their lost ratings, later.

Anonymous said...

@12:40AM: While the News may be the star, the "most trusted name in news," is NOT Piers Morgan.
All he does is ask repetitious questions that any fifth grader could read off a card: Where are you now? How close is that from here? It is my understanding that we....blah,blah,blah.

Anonymous said...

That is exactly why CNN should go with the pros.
Journalists know the questions to ask and react
to what is being said. They know how to navigate
a conversation. In situations like the nuclear crisis
unfolding in Japan, one can take precautions. I
see Sanjay Gupta now has a monitor and I'm sure
all CNN crews are equipped with the proper devices.
On a daily basis we come in contact with radiation.
Of course not at this level. This Japan quake, tsunami
and nuclear crisis will be a big news story for
months. It is going from bad to worse. I am glad
that Sanjay Gupta is on the ground with all of
the CNN people and I have noticed that all of
the networks are moving people back.

There are some things that CNN needs to keep
in mind while covering the news out of Japan.
First, Japanese culture. Secondly, Japanese history.
They have dealt with a nuclear disaster and some
of their elderly have vivid memories. It likely has
something to do with the reaction to the possible
nuclear meltdown. They have some 50 people
working to save a country and all of the news
orgs that have come to cover the news. Thirdly,
the political situation in Japan. The PM has not
been at the job long. There has been recent
political turmoil. That probably has some
impact on how the government is handling
informing it's citizens.

Anonymous said...

Thank you CNN for your excellent coverage
of the events in Japan. TV Newser has the
ratings for the weekend and they are very
impressive. CNN decisively won the ratings.
It is clear. : viewers prefer CNN's coverage.
It makes things interesting for the March
2011. There seems to be a shift toward
CNN.

Anonymous said...

CNN better stop letting Eliot Spitzer &
Piers Morgan do breaking news. CNN
got beat badly in prime time with 360
being the exception. Take it seriously
CNN. Put your journalists on the story.

Anonymous said...

I knew it was going to be bad when I saw TSR
go with the Cafferty File. C'mon CNN. There
is a time and place for everything. It should
not have been on the show. CNN needs to
make up it's mind, do you want to win. If
you tried to actually watch CNN at 8 & 9
last night, you know why those numbers
are bad. Live breaking news takes skills.
Neither of these shows had it. What is scary
for CNN is that less than 200,000 viewers
separated Rachel and Piers.CNN viewers
deserve better. It was virtually no change
from 8-9. When CNN gets numbers like
that in the first 2 hrs of prime time, you
know it's the talent.360 had no problem
getting viewers even with a repeat at 11.
It pays to use your best and brightest on
this news story not amateurs. Wake up.

CNN has Anderson Cooper, Sanjay Gupta &
Soledad O'brien on the ground in Japan. Let
them be live from Japan anchoring live on the
scene from 8- midnight. Have Isha Sesay and
others as backups in the studio. ALL 3 are
capable anchors and have done it before and
are trusted by viewers. There is now a new fire
at the nuclear power plant. That is an ominous
turn. I need someone I can trust to put it all
into perspective.

Anonymous said...

Where is Wolf?
Is he in Japan?
Wasn't he scheduled to go some place before this event happened?
Wolf is also very capable. Let's not forget that.

Anonymous said...

It amazes me that with all Japan's events unfolding, Fox News still prevails at #2 in Cable.
Yes, CNN was pushed to #7, but it will not hold. The minute breaking news isn't breaking, back down it will go.
FOX NEWS has a loyal audience no matter what is happening. Period.

I think viewers are angry at CNN for putting a
pundit and a tabloid journalist to cover a story
of life and death . People decided to tune out
CNN until 360. When you get a huge shift like
that for 360 you know what happened.

People had a problem with that.

CNN needs to think about what they are doing.
We have Americans, US military personnel in
Japan and you turn to CNN and you see Eliot
Spitzer & Piers Morgan. How would you feel
if you had family members in Japan ?

Why would you have John King toss to a show
called In The Arena. Not an appropriate title.
By the way In The Arena had an inappropriate
graphic that said killer quake. Does anyone
at the network actually pay any attention to
what goes out over the airwaves It implies
that it is a wrestling show and you have
life, death and a nuclear crisis.

Today Jack asked why there was no
looting in Japan. What is wrong with
the people running CNN ?

Yes, they should go with Anderson, Sanjay
and Soledad and the crews on the scene
but they are too buy trying to save mistakes.

Dr Gupta has a wealth of knowledge about
radiation. He definitely needs to be on
CNN rather than Eliot Spitzer and PIers
Morgan.

Anon 6:26 you are right and it should be
the team in prime time on CNN all week.
But since it is CNN that we are talking
about it won't happen. It makes too
much sense.

Anonymous said...

Those are unbelievable demo numbers for
360. Only BOR topped both hours of 360.
The show is bringing in viewers as well.
What Anderson Cooper & Team 360 are
doing is remarkable. CNN's numbers would
be lower at 8 & 9 if MSNBC had Keith doing
Countdown. Piers Morgan has been getting
a bump from 360. Yet 360 has no help, No
show builds up an audience unlike Fox .CNN
needs to go with a lineup designed to top
Fox. I don't understand why someone like
Don Lemon was not dispatched to anchor
AM alongside Kiran.

Anonymous said...

I think Jack Cafferty's point about no looting in Japan, meant that he thought the people were just very civilized and Soledad and AC said the same thing.
But I agree it was an "odd" question to put to an audience.
And the way it was phrased, made it laughable. After all, we are talking about CNN.

Anonymous said...

CNN needs to knock it off with the stupid
questions. It comes across as holier than
thou, considering their recent hires they
should not be judgmental. It's offensive
and big turnoff. CNN is falling back into
old habits and it shows why you do not
watch the network in the first place. A
rookie executive knows you don't go with
Eliot Spitzer and PIers Morgan on breaking
news. Neither is good at the tv thing.

Phebe said...

I have to disagree with those who say Eliot Spitzer can't do breaking news. Have you tried watching for a few nights? He's doing a good job, obviously smart and asks questions that cut to the heart of the matter.

As to Piers, I guess if I can't say anything nice I won't say anything at all. (And that says it all!)

Anonymous said...

Maybe it would be smart for CNN to bring in
their reporters to be on the set with Spitzer
for the hour. The EU is saying in a couple of
hours the nuclear crisis could be a major
disaster. It is causing the Dow to go down.
Twitter had been more concerned about the
Fukushima 50 than CNN. That is bad journalism.
I just don't think a quake,tsunami and impending
nuclear disaster is fodder for inappropriate
questions. This is a situation that calls for CNN
to be serious about the news coming out of
Japan. I need to see Wolf, Anderson and CNN
anchors & reporters all of the time. The next
2 hrs will be scary. This is a 6 on the nuclear
scale and judging by the statements for the
EU. It is going to be heartbreaking. This
morning GMA said they use older workers
since they are likely to die before suffering
a painful death from the effects of radiation.

Anonymous said...

FOX NEWS has a loyal audience no matter what is happening. Period.

The most frightening "news" channel ever and their audience is even more scary. I guess some people like being lied to. I have a lot of issues with CNN especially now that they seem to be taking a more conservative slant, but nothing, but nothing could ever make me watch Fox.

Anonymous said...

Under no circumstances will I watch Fox.
The network has ruined news in the U.S.
Too bad CNN is following Fox and going
over the cliff by doing so. CNN needs to
be an alternative to Fox and based on
reality. I am annoyed with CNN a lot these
days but that has made me go on the web.

Anonymous said...

CNN is doing a good job covering Japan, but they OVERDO a lot of their story telling.
Whenever their ratings are high, like now, they don't know when enough is enough.
Ofcourse with the reactor story front and center, this is the biggest story in news, but when things settle down...weeks from now, CNN will still be on the reactor story. And this is when people lose interest and their ratings take a tumble and they never learn.
They also did a very poor job not covering Wisconsin and when the political season heats up, they will feel it.
US workers don't like being ignored for elitists stories and they will remember. I know I will.
