Whoa . It is really getting tight at 10 PM.
I am wondering if FNC numbers will go
down in prime time once there is no more
Glen Beck. FNC's lower numbers are a big
surprise. Unfortunately, CNN doesn't have
strong shows all around. if BOR gets down
below 500 thousand , the numbers will also
go lower for Hanninty and Greta. Stay tuned.
I just hope they leave 360 alone and let them
do their own thing.. Only a 33 thousand demo
difference between AC & Greta. Oh the drama.

I was disappointed to see Fouad Ajami back on 360. Anderson's a huge admirer of his, but I find him biased and decidedly unimpressive. What's next, Dana Loesch again?

Anonymous said...

Don't worry about Fox News.
Megan Kelly is waiting in the wings on maternity leave, should Greta get dumped.
Unlike CNN, they have more than one star.

Anonymous said...

If they haven't gotten rid of Anderson by now at CNN, they never will, regardless of who comes in at 10 on Fox. Some might be dying to see Anderson yanked off CNN, but it may not happen the way you're hoping. It may not happen at all.

CNN keeps falling behind at 8 & 9. There
could be some viewer sentiment shifting.
The ratings matter for all 3. If there
is no longer dominance by FNC, that is
an opening for either CNN or MSNBC.

John KIng anchored 360 on Friday and was
# 1. 360 is gaining in younger viewers and
it likely is attributed to younger viewers who
want news and not opinion. I am not sure
Megan Kelly is a sure thing to beat Anderson
Cooper. Not only that , there is Rachel Maddow
at 9. This weekend FNC had John Stossel.
There numbers have been down on weekends
for months and now it seems to be spilling
over into the weekdays. If CNN or MSNBC
tops FNC in the demo that is big news and
trouble for FNC. 2 weeks remain so we will
see how May 2011 plays out. For certain the
ratings will drop during the months of June,
July and August. Which network will take
the largest hit ?

I am not worried about Fox News, I am just
noticing some weak spots. Which leads me
to believe CNN should go with a women's
news show at 8. It would be a clear alternative
to what is on Fox, HLN & MSNBC.

The line up : Erin Butnett, Isha Sesay,Jennifer
Delgado & Kristi Lui Stout. That is a diverse
group of smart women who know their stuff.
They can all handle breaking news and can
do news that is less serious but interesting.
Any one of these women could hang around
to do the 360 news brief. Hey from time to
time add a couple of guys on for the hour.
Hold a contest for people to come up with
a name for the show.

Take for an example , your lead story is the
Arnold confession. You put together an kick
butt open with a song like Careless Whisper
or a similar song. Music is used to connect
with female viewers. I am not talking about
a male bashing hour. The songs can cover
the gambit. There are thousands of songs
about women, that relate to woman, etc. I
think it is the diversity of females on The
View & The Talk that help make them popular.
One exception. Neither have single women in
the mix. I would like for it to be conversational
like The Talk and not the annoyance that can
overtake The View. No politics or ideology.
Women consume news outside of fashion and
cooking. We can cover the whole spectrum when
it comes to conversations about the news.

Natural Woman by Aretha will never get old.
Set up a blog for viewers to submit songs for
the playlist and set it up so you can go to FB
or a blog to submit songs for the show. Let
the website be the only place where you can
find the full list of songs. That is how you
engage viewers. There are times when you
hear a song during a show and you are
looking for a title so you can download it
to the Ipod.

Let me be clear Erin would be the only permanent
host. It would be her show. She would just have
alternating girl councils or mixed gender reporters
from CNN, CNN International, HLN and other Time
Warner properties. Even throw in the female sports
anchor from CNN International. Women are some
of the most loyal costumers.

Anonymous said...

Okay CNN. Like what your are trying to do
with graphics. Please drop the banners when
you have a graphic, Graphics are suppose to
be full of information you don't need the banner.

Anonymous said...

I am in favor of music featuring pieces all day
long on CNN. People put music to their videos
all of the time. Just be sure the song is right
for the subject and not used when it just is
not right. Ironically, just the other day on a
college radio station. I heard an unbelievable
song from Fantasia who won American Idol
one year. It is a love song but it is about food.
Something about the guy;s love being better
than her mom's collard greens and cornbread.
Amazingly, that is the name of the song .
Collard Greens & Cornbread and you know
what I downloaded the song that day. Cable
news ignores women. Until Rachel Maddow,
women focused basically on crime and not
serious news. Can't hurt to try.

I am going to start keeping an eye on weekends.
CNN averaged 322,000 in prime time on Saturday.
Give a lot of credit to the Bin Laden doc . it beat
Huckabee in the demo and was the top demo of
the night. Tj, Fred, Don, Reynolds and the weekend
team are putting up some big numbers on Saturday
and Sunday. Why do I get the feeling CNN will find
a way to mess that up. You guys might be on to
something. Maybe if they did not repeat Sit Room
and Piers Morgan the numbers would be higher.
If I am not mistaken, Saturday was the highest
demo for CNN of the week.

CNN has a Spitzer problem. It is down right
creepy to see him talking about sexual wrongs.
Now CNN is being blasted for doing a piece on
politicians and sex scandals. Guess who was
left out. You know it was Eliot Spitzer. The man
has no credibility and CNN is hypocritical to
say the least. You don't give this guy a show
in prime time period. CNN needs to clean up
this mess now. Clearly CNN has a double
standard. Eliot Spitzer's ratings are not so
good either but he some how still is on CNN
in prime time. This stinks.

Anonymous said...

@11:59: You are absolutely WRONG.
Spitzer was sighted on 360 in Tom Foreman's report on sexual infidelity. Obviously YOU did not see the program or were too busy "making stuff up."

Anonymous said...

The package ran at 2:30 and CNN was called
out. It is all of the web. Inside Cable News, TV
Newser, etc. It was changed on 360 after the
Baltimore Sun posted a stunning rebuke.

It seems that it is official. Kaj Larsen is with
CNN and not Current TV. It is my hope that
CNN will go after the rest of the Vanguard
Team : Mariana Van Zeller, Christof Putzel
and Adam Yamaguchi. Vanguard is making
waves and winning awards. Also hire Laura
Ling who was the brains behind the show
before leaving Current. It is a way for CNN
to get 2 different doc styles on the network.
In addition to pursuing George Strombo from
CBC, go after Mark Kelley and Reshmi Nair.
CNN needs to beef up it's reporting.

Come June 20th Current will be airing the
new Countdown and Vanguard will be on
Mondays after Countdown. This could have
an impact at 8. All 3 shows are down at 8
and it is only May. I know come this day I
will go to Current at 8 and Vanguard on
Mondays. I am a fan of good journalism.
360, TSR are the best shows on CNN.

HLN needs a complete overhaul. Try going
with CNN I shows on HLN. I really don't
understand why CNN is going with a complete
rerun of Morning Express. From 9 in the
morning until the end of the night, HLN is
totally worthless.

Ironically, CNN International is doing many of
the things talked about on this blog, There is
no crawl. It is a mystery why CNN doesn't push
to have it more widely available in the U.S. Not
long ago so many were hoping that CNN domestic
would use more of the material from CNN I like
they did during the quake/tsunami in Japan. In
many ways I think that CNN is afraid that CNN I
would make CNN domestic look like amateurs.
The anchors are way better without a doubt.

Now everyone thinks Turner Broadcasting is
run by trolls. People were going online to
watch CNN International because we can't
see it in this country and Turner sent word
for them to stop showing their programs.
We really like Word 1, News Stream, World
Report, World View and all of the great shows
on CNN International. Now Turner took away
our only way to get real news.CNN domestic
is not a news channel. It is opinion and not
much news. You can't find out what is really
going on and basically get factless segments.

I agree about CNN going heavy on tech and
social media news. It is essential and relevant
to people's lives not a talkback question. I
DVR Bloomberg West daily. Bloomberg gets
it and CNN doesn't . CNN has to pivot from
too much politics and opinion. Nothing more
emphasizes old media. Really CNN ,one person
in Silicon Valley.

Is June when Erin Burnett comes on the air ?
I'm not sure if Ali Velshi is going to be on AM
permanently. The big question is who gets
moved or canceled for Erin Burnett ? Kyra
Phillips is also coming back in June. Will Erin
be on in the morning or prime time ? I have
not seen Stephanie Elam lately and it sounds
like Erin outranks Ali.

According to TVN's Cable Ranker, no need to worry about Fox News.
It placed 5th in the top ten and was the only cable news outlet to do so. CNN placed 28th and came in third after MSNBC for May 9th.
Which goes to show that UNLESS there is really BREAKING NEWS, old habits die hard and viewers will continue to watch what they usually watch and not change.

GMA knows how to involve viewers. CNN
learn from this. GMA let's the viewer decide
what they like rather than trying to control
the conversation like CNN. People determine
conversation on Face Book & Twitter. Talk
radio and cable news can no longer be in
control of what people are talking about
or what stories truly interest them. Now you
can use your Iphone, Ipad Toch, Ipad or
android to vote for the stories you like as
the show is live on the air.CNN needs a
social media team now and let people who
are involved in a show communicate with
viewers during the show. I really think AC
tweeting during 360 has something to do
with the growth of his show.

CNN has to be about as much real time as
possible. It is not about you and your rant
and your fantasies about running things.
Treat your viewers like they matter and stop
pushing agendas. Real Time news is the
future and keep the news fresh and current.

CNN really has some problems right now
that need to be taken care of sooner and
not later.

They are : HLN, American Morning, In The
Arena & Piers Morgan Tonight.

The shows on HLN are pathetic with the
exception of Morning Express. American
Morning is just not working with the current
cast there is starting to be distance between
AM and Morning Joe. In The Arena can't even
build on the numbers of John King. At 8 PM
the numbers go down for CNN. Piers Morgan
is also falling behind The 1 hour interview
show is a thing of the past. What makes it
worse is the the host is not a good questioner
or listener.Spitzer and Morgan can't even get
200,000 in the demo.

Just think about what prime time numbers
CNN could have if they really wake up about
2 losers and face reality. Time to cancel both
In The Arena and Piers Morgan. Viewers are
giving a thumbs down to AM, ITA & PMT.

We were just playing around with the numbers
at 10 for May 2011. A couple of days before
the month might be included in the ratings
cycle so they could be a little off. Some things
of interest to report. 360 is leading the demo
for the hour with 458,000, Greta has 420,000
& Ed has 312,000. Keep in mind there were
specials and Ed is on 4 days a week. Greta is
finishing 1st so far this week but it seems this
will play out until next Friday.360 is the only
thing CNN has going for it in prime time.
Will things play out like this for the rest of
the year or will one of the shows break away
from the pack ? Does anyone know when was
the last time any hour in cable news was
this competitive ?

Did you guys notice that CNN had a banner
that said # CNNTV during the speech from
President Obama. It makes me wonder if CNN
will be changing the logo. ESPN is very good
at framing a ton of info that does not get in
the way of highlights. I really like the menu
bar on the left that tells you what is going to
be happening as you watch Sports Center.
I really think CNN should have menu bars
telling you in real time what is coming up
on the show with the exact time the segment
can be seen as you are watching CNN. Does
not having a banner on a map or visualization
graphic defeat the purpose. Visualization
graphics tell a story that you should be able
to follow easily. Same for the infographics.
Everything should line up and be the same
size and the show title/logo side by side.
Just move all of the banners and show titles
& the logo to the bottom leaving no black
space. I have no problem with the black space
at the top. In fact you can have live bug in
the right corner and when you have to have
a location super line it up right next to the
live bog. No doubt CNN needs a graphics
upgrade. Does CNN really know what a
debate is. Bringing on guests with different
pov's is not a debate. It is their opinions.

Somebody at CNN needs to do something.
Morning Joe is starting to go in the 500
thousand range. That means it's growing
and AM is not. AM is a horrible way to
start the morning. Flip between the big
3 and Morning Joe. I am not a fan of AM.
The most annoying trio.

CNN has to deal with 2 prime time mistakes.
The network always waits to late. It is clear
that Spitzer and Morgan are lost causes.
What does it take to get the attention of
CNN management. The ratings this week
are not welcome news.At some point CNN
has to face reality. This can't go on.CNN
is not a viewer friendly experience. June,
July and August are generally months when
the ratings drop, so thing won't get better.

CNN should move CNN International shows
to HLN. From noon to 6 am. Only offer HLN
from 6 am to noon. Heck I would go with
News Stream on CNN.

@9:06AM: You make some very good points about how lame Piers Moron really is. He isn't a good listener and that's only the lst of the other problems with his show.
At least Larry listened to what someone was saying, and the art of a good interview is how well the person listens.
Before anyone can answer, he's already thinking ahead what his next question will be. And as you say, the hour interview is sooo over.
Unless it is Obama, no one deserves an hour because no one is all that important anymore. Those days ARE OVER.
I agree also about AC's tweeting during the show for promotion and this does boost the numbers.
However, AC loses interest in doing these little extras like blogging. We all were excited when he blogged and then....nothing.
Then there was the webcam and again we'd follow his every move and then no webcam, too intrusive perhaps. So no, unless the anchor really wants the show to succeed and be #1 ALL THE TIME, it will remain third in totals.

Anonymous said...

What the audience seems to like is interaction with the anchor and I think that may be one of the reasons Anderson's numbers were up. For the last few nights however, he hasn't really responded to his followers on Twitter like he was doing in the past. Maybe he's extremely busy and hasn't been able to do it, but if he goes back to just tweeting what's on the program, his audience/followers will lose interest very quickly.

Fouad Ajami is never a welcome sight on 360, IMO but unfortunately Anderson is a huge admirer of his and seems to have an enormous amount of respect for his opinion. I have absolutely no interest in what Ajami thinks about President Obama, because the man is CLEARLY biased and it's insulting that they have him on to denigrate everything the President does. Talk to someone who doesn't have an ax to grind.

@Anon May 18, 1:20pm: Stephanie Elam left CNN in April, to move to Calif with her family.

Oprah will leave a void for female viewers.
We can only hope that CNN is smart enough
to go after women viewers. For weeks it has
been rumored that ABC will be canceling
General Hospital for Katie Couric. If that is
true that is smart for ABC. ABC News has
full episodes for all of it's shows. What they
are doing now with real time reax is great.
CBS & NBC are not quite full episodes. I'm
keeping an eye on CBS News. Les Moonves
was smart in hiring David Rhodes from
Bloomberg. Now Chris Licht is joining CBS
News. These 2 are young fresh minds in
the news business. All news orgs must
have a strong web presence. Never understood
why CNN dropped Nicole Lapin on the web.
Think mobile and social interaction CNN.
I have yet to come across one person who
responds to a question on cable news. In
fact they laugh about. Not forward thinking.
Hello. It makes sense to let viewers comment
on the news and not loaded questions filled
with misinformation. The other day CNN
looked really stupid the question was in
regards to Republicans not running and
CNN made it seem like it was because of
partisan bickering. Excuse me but is that
not what Donald Trump and Mike Huckabee
been doing ? Good grief , it has nothing to
do with them not running. It is a shame
when reporters don't understand the news
and repeat partisan talking points.

Of course it was Carol Costello. Same goes
for Jack Cafferty.CNN just loves to insult
their viewers. Not good business. It is a
very low chance that your e-mail gets read
but reaction during the show is more
effective and reliable. First of all they have
to be watching your show and not just
going to a website to answer a question.
Real time reax is authentic.

Not only that, Tumblr, Face Book, Twitter,
You Tube, Vimeo & the 360 blog. Now in
journalism school you are taught to reach
out to the public. It is no longer a one way
street. All CNN employees should be on
these platforms. The question might have
worked 10 years ago but it is obsolete
right now. Currently, news networks are
being developed solely for Face Book, You
Tube, Twitter, etc. At times CNN reminds
you of the commercial with the guy
pretending to be a woman named Peggy
and you are not in control, they are. The
solution : you switch to a different company.

Oh the drama. American Morning is now
going below 300,000. CNN has a problem
if people start turning to Morning Joe and
leave the channel on MSNBC that is not good
for CNN. Let's hope CNN has learned a lesson.
3 hosts on AM is not working and is a loser.
According to Tv by the Numbers, it was a
mere 281,000 viewers. Could it be people
are ditching AM in favor of MJ ? Looking to
see if there will be changes in June.

You can't go with a political debate show or
celebrity interview show in prime news. Try
something new. It is only a matter of time
before In the Arena and Piers Morgan drag
down 360's ratings.CNN brand is severely
damage in need of repair. Why would you
ask your viewers to stomach Piers Morgan
and Eliot Spitzer back to back ?

Anonymous said...

"Of course it was Carol Costello."

If you dislike her, just wait until Kyra Phillips gets back -- perhaps you've forgotten how bad it can be.

According to TVN, AC/360 is beginning to bleed viewers. AC better get back to NYC and start tweeting during show time.
For the fourth nite in a row he has been third, now in demos as well, and let's not speak about the Moron who will be interviewing two of the dullest Apprentices ever on Friday nite.
Trump was 40th in the rankings this week even though we all know his show is well....HUGE, isn't that the word he uses to describe everything he does?
