IN HER CORNER: LATINO IN AMERICA – Sunday 8:00PM-9:00PM, 11:00PM – 12:00AM, 2:00AM – 3:00AM (all times Eastern)
CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien reports on Marlen Esparza’s Olympic dreams. The International Olympic Committee has allowed female boxing into competition – for the first time – in the 2012 games. Five-time U.S. national champion, 21-year-old Esparza weighs 112 pounds and hits so quickly and so hard that she has to spar with men. She is beautiful and oozes charm, but also has been fixated on the male-dominated boxing since she was 11 years old – shunning friends, boyfriends, a social life, and even TV to make time to train. She was smart enough to earn full scholarships to top colleges, but postponed college because she and her family dream she will one day represent the U.S. in the Olympics, giving their Mexican-American community a hero that could push aside negative stereotypes. Standing in Esparza’s way are the competitors who share her Olympic aspirations, a mirror of the kind of girls who box in this country – mostly blue collar, women of color, who struggle in what is traditionally a man’s sport. Chief among them, and also profiled, is Cristina Cruz, a Puerto Rican from Hell’s Kitchen.
