Piers Morgan Talks With The Hollywood Reporter

Piers Morgan, who joined CNN almost two years ago, has some ideas for how the network can pull itself out of the cable news ratings basement. “We should collectively as a network be more aggressive, more provocative, more debate-y,” he says. Averaging 576,000 viewers, with 175,000 in the 25-to-54 demo for the month of October, Morgan places third behind his 9 p.m. competitors Sean Hannity (Fox News) and Rachel Maddow (MSNBC) but has the most-watched show on the network, beating Anderson Cooper’s 8 p.m. program. Morgan recently has moved away from the single-interview format that he envisioned when his show launched and toward multiple topics and guests with more live shows. “It’ll be crackly, provocative, opinionated,” On Monday, Oct. 30, when Hurricane Sandy was bearing down on the East Coast, Piers Morgan Tonight was the top-rated cable news program in the demo, pulling in 1 million viewers 24-54 with 2.4 million overall.

The Hollywood Reporter: What does CNN need to do to be competitive again?
Piers Morgan: There has been a slight timidity internally in not wanting to be provocative or opinionated on air because you could stray into being partisan. If the anchor has taken a position on gun control or abortion, somehow you’re losing that neutrality. I don’t agree. I have become increasingly vocal on my show about these very issues, totally unafraid to say what I think. It’s actually better television if a host says: “You know what I think about abortion? I think it should be down to the women.” What I won’t say is if I’m going to vote for Obama or Romney. The beauty for me is [as a Brit], I can’t.

THR: Do you think Jeff Zucker would make a good leader for CNN?
Morgan: I love Jeff Zucker. I wouldn’t be here without him. He was the boss at NBC Universal. I was under a contract [as host of America’s Got Talent]; everybody had said to him, "Don’t let him go," and, "Why do we want to share our talent with CNN?" And he said: “I get it. This is your dream job, and I’m going to let you do it.” He’s a very capable executive. But I think there are lots of people who could do that job very capably, and it won’t be my decision. I can say with total honesty I have no idea who is going to get the job.

THR: What was your best interview?
Morgan: Probably the Robert Blake interview. I actually have never seen the security guys come onto the studio floor as they did for that. I thought something was going to happen. It was so crazy and yet such compelling television. Then I would say [Iranian president Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad was a very significant one for us because we got the world-exclusive interview when he came here [in September] for the United Nations, and that’s a big deal. And I think the general verdict was I gave him a pretty hard time and got some good stuff out of him and that it was a good bit of combat.

THR: So are you moving away from celebrities hawking something and toward newsmakers?
Morgan: I would not buy stock in the C-list celebrity guests. I think we're interested in big stars or intelligent people, preferably both. I met Gen. David Petraeus, who I'm a huge fan of, at the Vanity Fair White House Correspondents’ Dinner party. And he said: “I really like your show, but I just don't like all the C-list celebrities. Why do you bother with them?” And I didn't really have a good answer. What we should be doing is filling that space with intelligent debate about issues and stories of the day and then saving the celebrity time for people who matter, who are proper stars and have something to say.

This is just a sampling of THR's Q & A with Morgan.  For the entire read follow this link.

ROMNEY REVEALED: Family, Faith and the Road to Power – Airs Sunday  8:00PM – 9:30PM and 11:00PM (Monday 2:00AM)
CNN chief political analyst Gloria Borger reports for Romney Revealed, speaking with Ann and Mitt Romney, and eldest son, Tagg, exploring the lessons Mitt Romney learned while growing up in a family that has been in the public eye for the last 50 years – and the 2012 presidential candidate.  George Romney was a three-term Republican governor of Michigan who ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 1968.  Romney’s mother, Lenore, ran for the U.S. Senate in 1970, with the young Mitt Romney by her side.  Borger looks beyond Mitt Romney’s political biography into the key chapters of his personal and business life, speaking with Romney’s childhood friends, traveling to France to retrace his days as a Mormon missionary, and to Belmont, Massachusetts, where he was a church leader.  In additional interviews, she speaks with fellow 2002 Olympics organizers and former Bain colleagues, such as Fraser Bullock, an early member of Bain and COO of the Salt Lake City games, and to Beth Myers, Romney’s chief of staff during his tenure as Massachusetts governor, the head of his 2008 campaign, and the person who vetted his vice-presidential pick.  Also interviewed are current and former political figures such as former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), who discusses Romney’s 1994 U.S. Senate challenge to his father, Ted Kennedy.  Discussing Romney’s presidential races are 2012 senior campaign adviser Eric Fehrnstrom, 2008 campaign media adviser and CNN contributor Alex Castellanos, and CNN contributor Erick Erickson, among others.

OBAMA REVEALED: The Man, The President – Airs Sunday 9:30AM – 11:00PM (Monday 12:30AM and 3:30PM)
When President Barack Obama came into office he faced towering expectations, a severe economic crisis, and a bitterly divided nation.  Obama Revealed looks at the pros and cons of President Obama’s cool demeanor and what happened when his lofty goals met the realities of Washington.  In an exclusive interview, Yellin speaks with President Barack Obama about his time in office, the challenges he faced, and his ambitions for a second term.  Included are interviews with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, former director of the White House Economic Council Dr. Larry Summers, and former chairs of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers Austan Goolsbee and Dr. Christina Romer.  Yellin also interviews members of the president’s inner circle of confidantes including senior campaign strategist David Axelrod, senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, and long-time personal aide Reggie Love.  These voices tell the inside story behind the president’s efforts to solve the nation’s economic crisis, push for health care reform, and kill Osama bin Laden.  In separate exclusive interviews, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) offer their sharp perspectives on working with the president and the failure to bring Republicans and Democrats together in Washington.  Obama biographer and Washington Post associate editor David Maraniss, Rice University professor and historian Douglas Brinkley, and New York Times chief White House correspondent David Sanger add independent insights from their research.

VOTERS IN AMERICA: WHO COUNTS Airs Saturday, Oct. 20 at 8:00PM, 11:00PM, 2:00AM
CNN senior correspondent Joe Johns investigates the impact of tough new voter laws with a particular focus on 80 new voting law changes in the battleground state of Florida – and how those changes may affect the outcome of the 2012 presidential election.  Supporters of Florida House Bill 1355, including sponsor State Rep. Dennis Baxley (R-Ocala) and national voter ID advocate Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) say that they want to secure the election from voter fraud.  Former Florida GOP chairman, Jim Greer tells Johns that the state’s new voting law was developed during a series of meetings following the high minority turnout in the 2008 presidential election.  And, opponents to the bill like LaVon Bracy, a long-time Orange County Florida voter registration activist, says she feels sponsors of the law intend “to suppress the minority vote.”  Deidre Macnab, president of Florida’s the League of Women Voters (LWV), says the consequence of the new registration form filing deadline, which includes the risk for a $5,000 fine and potential felony prison penalty for false registration, forced her organization to stop registering voters in the state.  Johns speaks to people on all sides of the debate and reports independent analysis of voter fraud data.
