Every 19 minutes someone dies of a drug overdose in America.  That U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistic refers to legal and illegal drug use, but most overdose deaths are due to legal prescription drugs.  CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta interviews former President Bill Clinton about the death of a son of a friend.  The  father and brother of that young man speak movingly about their loss and hopes to educate other families facing the problem of prescription drug misuse.  Dr. Gupta also speaks with a survivor, and takes viewers to the front lines of the crisis – riding along with paramedics, interviewing emergency room doctors, and listening to panicked calls to a poison response center – witnessing first-hand, the too-often deadly consequences of drug overdoses.

Phil Kent Announces Jeff Zucker New President of CNN

Jeff Zucker Named President of CNN Worldwide

Jeff Zucker will join CNN Worldwide as president of the multi-platform global news enterprise, it was announced today by Phil Kent, chairman and CEO of CNN parent company Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.  In January 2013, Zucker will assume executive oversight of a portfolio of 23 branded news and information businesses that includes CNN/U.S., CNN International, CNN.com and HLN and reaches more than 2 billion people in some 200 countries around the world.  Zucker will report to Kent and will be based at CNN in New York.

Zucker started his 25-year career with NBC as a researcher for NBC Sports’ coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympic Games and rose to president and chief executive officer of NBC Universal.  He was named executive producer of Today in January 1992; under his eight-year leadership, the program was the most-watched morning news show and the most profitable program on television.  Zucker went on to executive-produce NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and the network’s coverage of the Persian Gulf War, the 1993 and 1997 presidential inaugurations and the 2000 elections.  He was promoted to president of NBC Entertainment, president of the NBC Entertainment, News & Cable group and president and CEO of the NBC Universal Television Group.  Currently, Zucker is executive producer of the syndicated daytime show Katie.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• CNN has best monthly performance in total day in over a year among both total viewers and in the key demo 25-54 and in M-F prime among 25-54

• CNN has substantial growth vs. a year ago in both total day and weekday primetime
• In the key demo 25-54, CNN grew more than the cable competition in both total day and M-F primetime vs. a year ago
• Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien has its best month since launch
• Erin Burnett Outfront has best month since launch
• AC 360 has best month since launching at 8pm
• Piers Morgan Tonight has best month in over a year (since March 2011)
• All three hours of The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer have substantial growth in November
• CNN dayside tops MSNBC in both total viewers and the key demo 25-54

CNN had substantial growth in November increasing +59% in total day/total viewers (652k vs. 409k) and +98% in total day/demo 25-54 (241k vs. 122k) vs. a year ago.  In weekday primetime, delivery increased by even more robust margins -- +72% in total viewers (1.254m vs. 729k) and +131% in the key demo 25-54 (494k vs. 214k).  This represents CNN’s best monthly performance in total day in over a year among both total viewers and in the key demo 25-54 and in M-F prime among 25-54.

Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien had its best month since launching in January, growing double digits from a year ago.  In total viewers the morning program was up +36% (393k vs. 290k) and increased 44% in the key demo 25-54 (164k vs. 114k).

Erin Burnett Outfront also had its strongest month since launch (October 2011) in both total viewers and in the key demo.  The show had the most growth in total viewers compared to the competition, increasing +52% (774k vs. 510k) and also increased +81% in the key demo (254k vs. 140k).

AC360 at 8pm had its best month since launching in August 2011.  Versus a year ago, AC 360 was up +41% among total viewers (914k vs. 650k) and +63% in the key demo (313k vs. 192k).  AC at 10pm also had solid gains vs. a year ago, increasing +20% in total viewers and +34% in the key demo 25-54.

At 9pm Piers Morgan Tonight had its best performance in both total viewers and in the key demo since March 2011 (Japan earthquake).  In November, PMT increased +44% in total viewers (905k vs. 629k) and +73% in the key demo (271k vs. 157k). 

The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer had substantial growth in November, with all three hours increasing among total viewers and in the key demo vs. a year ago. Situation Room at 6p saw the most sizeable increases in total viewers compared to the competition, increasing +83% (938k vs. 512k) and also increased +169% in the key demo (326k vs. 121k).

During dayside (weekdays 9a-5p) CNN topped MSNBC in November in both total viewers (701k vs. 687k) and in the key demo (233k vs. 206k).

Now that all the final data is in from Election Day, CNN was:

#1 on cable news during election night (7p-2a) in total viewers, 25-54 and younger viewers (18-34)

#1 on all of television for election night (7p-2a) in younger viewers 18-34 (topping all the networks, NBC, ABC, CBS, FNC and MSNBC)

#1 on cable television in total day among 25-54 key demo

CNN topped CBS and Fox broadcast in primetime among both total viewers and 25-54 on election night

CNN also had more African-American, Hispanic and Asian/Pacific Islander viewers than the cable competition on election night.  CNN had more than FNC and MSNBC combined for each demographic.  Compared to the broadcast networks, CNN also led in African-American viewers in each demographic (total viewers, 25-54 and 18-34).

CNN Digital on Election Day:

November 2012 hosted a number of records for CNN Digital. Earning more than 46 million page views on November 6^th, CNN Mobile experienced its highest traffic in history - more than three times higher than its previous record. On Election Day CNN.com shattered a four-year traffic high, delivering 203 million page views and reaching more than 23 million unique visitors.  CNN also earned the title of most-cited TV news brand in measured social media on November 6^th, more than doubling that of second place – Fox News (Source: Sysomos).

In November, CNN reached an average monthly cumulative audience of 106.5 million, FNC had 93.0m and MSNBC averaged 78.4m.

Jeff Zucker Announcement Imminent?

TVNewser is reporting that Jeff Zucker is the final stages of negotiations to become the new President of CNN.  An announcement could come as early as this afternoon when Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes speaks at the Ignite media conference.
The New York Times offered more details into why Zucker and what CNN needs to return to it's past success.  We'll keep you posted.

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., Director of the Cardiovascular Prevention & Reversal Program at The Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute explains, “We’re never going to end the epidemic with stents, bypasses, or drugs – because none of it is treating the causation of the illness.” Cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston (author of “The South Beach Diet” books), says that conventional guidance on HDL (“good”) cholesterol vs. LDL (“bad”) cholesterol no longer applies.

CNN scoops three Foreign Press Association Media Awards

CNN scoops three Foreign Press Association Media Awards

 

Last night, the combined efforts of CNN Digital and CNN International saw the network triumph at the Foreign Press Association Media Awards, winning three categories: ‘Print & Web Feature’, ‘Arts & Culture’ and ‘Story of the Year by a Full Member of the FPA awards.’

The CNN documentary World’s Untold Stories: Secrets of the Belfast Project won News Story of the Year by a full FPA member. The judges described the documentary as “absolute dynamite, a terrific story and a fine piece of journalism". 

The Arts & Culture award was given to Leonardo – The Lost Painting, a documentary that explored the story behind the recent discovery of a Leonardo da Vinci painting. Judges praised the “love and lingering interest” that had gone into the piece, describing it as “a very well done cultural story.”

The Print & Web Feature award was clinched by Mauritania: Slavery’s Last Stand – a CNN Digital feature that revealed the shocking extent of slavery in modern Mauritania. The judges remarked that the piece was “in some ways the most convincing and best edited of all the categories.”

Tony Maddox, Executive Vice President of CNN International, said: "It is a significant honor for us at CNN to have our journalism recognized so comprehensively by the FPA. I couldn't be more proud of this testament to the expert story telling of our reporters."

Peter Bale, VP & General Manager, CNN Digital, said: “Mauritania: Slavery’s Last Stand” was part of CNN’s commitment to the Freedom Project, in which the network has been prepared to be an advocate, not just a reporter. It’s led to thousands being freed from slavery and raised awareness that this is very much a modern problem.” 

CNN was also nominated in the TV News category for its Syria: Inside Aleppo feature, and in the Digital Innovation category, for Open Story.

Accidental prescription drug overdoses in the United States now kill more people than heroin, crack, and methamphetamines combined.  And, also according to the CDC, accidental prescription overdoses now kill more Americans than do car crashes. 

In a compelling new documentary, Deadly Dose: Dr. Sanjay Gupta Reports, CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta reports how prescription drug misuse has become an epidemic.  He speaks with a survivor, and takes viewers to the front lines of the crisis – riding along with paramedics, interviewing emergency room doctors, and listening to panicked calls to a poison response center – witnessing, first-hand, the too-often deadly consequences of drug overdoses. 

Deadly Dose will debut on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 8:00pm and 11:00pm ET & PT on CNN/U.S.  The network will encore the one-hour documentary on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 8:00pm and 11:00pm ET & PT.

Deadly Dose also features an interview with former President Bill Clinton, who speaks movingly about the death of Benjamin Gupta (no relationship to Dr. Sanjay Gupta), the son of a campaign donor, who died after mixing a prescription pain reliever with alcohol.  Benjamin’s father, Vinod Gupta, and brother, Alex Gupta, talk about the emotional toll of their loss and their commitment to educating other families facing the problem of prescription drug misuse.

Former President Clinton spoke with Dr. Gupta in Arkansas in mid-November: 

“It is a good thing to have a medicine that will ease your pain.  It is not a good thing to take more of them than you need.  It is not a good thing to get even one (sic) to someone who does not need it.  And it is playing with life and death to give these medicines to people who have imbibed any kind of alcohol, because if you go to sleep, the medicine might tell your brain to quit breathing.  Most people don’t know these basic things,” says Clinton to Gupta in an interview exclusively conducted for the documentary. 

Dr. Gupta stresses that the epidemic of prescription drug abuse and accidental overdose knows no geographic boundaries.  It is a growing epidemic in urban, suburban, and rural populations.  According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the misuse and abuse of prescription painkillers were responsible for more than 475,000 emergency room visits in 2009, a figure which doubled compared to the number of hospital emergency visits just five years prior.

“The people that have this problem are your friends and neighbors – and you don’t know about it,” Clinton says in the documentary.  

Deadly Dose explores how this crisis has risen to epidemic proportions in the United States, and examines potential solutions for reversing the epidemic.
