Coverage of The Presidential Inauguration
CNN, Instagram and Facebook Team Up for an Interactive Inauguration Experience
CNN will anchor special coverage of the second inauguration of President Barack
Obama Sunday, Jan. 20 through Monday, Jan. 21 from locations on the National
Mall, Capitol Hill, Lafayette Park and on the parade route at Freedom Plaza.
For the first time, CNN, Instagram and Facebook will offer inauguration go-ers
an opportunity to be a part of the coverage on CNN and CNN.com by using the
hashtag #CNN to share their stories. Most of CNN’s coverage will originate from
the National Mall, where the network has built a large broadcast platform
designed to let television viewers experience the ceremonies
firsthand.
On Sunday, when a private swearing-in ceremony will take place at the White
House, Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper will be joined by John
Berman, Kate Bolduan, Gloria Borger, Erin Burnett,
Candy Crowley, John King, Don Lemon, Piers Morgan
and Soledad O’Brien starting at 10 a.m. and leading up to a prime time
special at 8 p.m. Inauguration eve special editions of Piers Morgan Tonight
and Anderson Cooper 360º will follow.
On Monday, Jan. 21, Early Start with John Berman and Zoraida Sambolin
and Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien will kick off the day’s coverage
at 5 a.m. Beginning at 9 a.m., Wolf Blitzer will be joined by John Berman, Kate
Bolduan, Soledad O’Brien and Jessica Yellin, live from the U.S. Capitol
West Front, while Anderson Cooper will be on the National Mall with Gloria
Borger, David Gergen, John King, Brooke Baldwin and Don
Lemon. HLN’s Robin Meade and Christi Paul will be reporting
for both CNN and HLN from the National Mall.
Candy Crowley will anchor State of the Union on Sunday from the
Mall and on Monday she will report from the inauguration ceremony platform.
Also reporting will be Dana Bash, Jim Acosta, Brianna Keilar,
Joe Johns and Tom Foreman.
The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer will be live from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
from Lafayette Park, the location of the presidential
viewing stands. From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Anderson Cooper will anchor the
network’s special coverage from the Mall, with Piers Morgan and Erin
Burnett from inside the inaugural balls. At 10 p.m., Anderson Cooper 360º
will broadcast live to wrap up the day’s events.
Throughout the Inaugural weekend, commentary and analysis will be provided by
CNN political contributors John Avlon, Paul Begala, Cornell
Belcher, Donna Brazile, Ron Brownstein, Alex Castellanos,
Ari Fleischer, Margaret Hoover, Van Jones, Ryan Lizza,
Roland Martin and Ana Navarro. Also on hand to contribute
commentary will be: Bill Burton, senior strategist for Priorities USA
Action and former deputy press secretary for Pres. Obama; Jodi Kantor,
New York Times reporter and author of “The Obamas;” David Maraniss,
Washington Post associate editor and author of “Barack Obama: The Story;” and Dee
Dee Myers, Vanity Fair contributing editor and former White House press
secretary during Pres. Clinton’s first term. Presidential historian Doris
Kearns Goodwin will offer her expert perspective.
Instagram and Facebook
CNN and Instagram have teamed up to
offer a multimedia look at the crowds who will gather for the inaugural
ceremonies. From Jan. 18 - 21, CNN will ask people attending inauguration
events to take a photo of themselves ‘in the crowd’ and post to Instagram with
the hashtag #CNN. Users will be encouraged to share a personal detail
about their participation: why they made the trip, what they expect from the
next four years and who they are. The photos will be displayed in an
interactive visualization for CNN.com and the best entries will appear in a
global slideshow on CNN.
Additionally, CNN and Facebook will
again partner to surface the most viral moments, photos and terms as they
spread across the world’s largest social network, telling the story firsthand
about the communities most engaged around the inauguration and what terms
dominated the social conversation. CNN will ask our viewers through Facebook to
identify, rate and react to the viral moments as they happen.
CNN Digital
On Monday, Jan. 21 from 10:30 a.m. to
1:30 p.m., CNN will offer unrestricted access to the
network’s TV broadcast and inauguration programming via the CNN.com homepage and CNN’s apps for iPhone and iPad. Users can
watch alternative inaugural festivities at CNN.com/live,
on CNN’s mobile apps and mobile website. Inauguration-related articles,
analysis and interactives can be found on CNNPolitics.com, the CNN Political Ticker, CNN’s Live Blog and at www.cnn.com/inauguration.

CNN International and CNN en Español
On Monday, Jan. 21, CNN International will simulcast domestic programming from
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. CNN en Español will offer live updates starting at 6 a.m.
on Café CNN and through the 11 a.m. hour on Actualidad en Vivo.
The network will carry the inauguration ceremony and parade live. CNN en
Español’s afternoon and prime time newscasts Nuestro Mundo, Directo USA, Panorama Mundial and Conclusiones will
be broadcast live from Washington,
DC.
HLN
HLN’s presidential inauguration
coverage will focus on “people, not policy,” and explore issues related to
where Americans want to be in the next four years. On Monday, Jan. 21, Morning
Express host Robin Meade will anchor live from our nation’s capital from 6 a.m.
to 10 a.m., with on-location reports from HLN’s Ryan Smith. Kyra
Phillips, based at HLN headquarters in Atlanta, will provide continued live coverage
of the day’s events from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
CNN Newsource
CNN Newsource will
provide its affiliates extensive, on the ground coverage from reporters Tory
Dunnan, Rene Marsh and Emily Schmidt.

This will be the first big story of the year. Gotta wonder if CNN will be 1st, 2nd or 3rd. With their Obama bashing , I will be turning to MSNBC.
Jake Tapper is moving into John King's office.
That's a pretty blatant sign that CNN is getting rid of John King post-inauguration.

I was watching The Situation Room coverage of the Kids concert. At the very end, Katy Perry was singing "Teenage Dream" and it so happens that Kate Bolduan's mic was on and you could hear her say "not the song she should be singing".
@2:48PM: You obviously don't watch CNN much. Any true CNN viewer knows that CNN does not take sides HOWEVER they do at times bring on pundits (which no ones likes) to give their political opinion. This is perhaps what you run into at times. The journalists and anchors don't take sides on CNN. On a side note, I too am a democrat (which I presume you are) yet would never turn to opinionated news like MSNBC or FOX that both take sides. I'm smart enough to make up my own decision rather than being influenced by people on other networks. A lot of people would agree with what I have to say and people like me would love nothing more than for CNN to get rid of opinionated pundits. I don't mean to sound smart about it, I just see so many comments on many blogs that resemble your comment.
@4:24PM: Hopefully Jake Tapper's new show will be better than John King's former show. He should have stuck with State Of The Union. I thought however that John King was amazing on Election Night. CNN needs to keep him and have him continue to be their lead political correspondent with perhaps an even bigger title. I hope John doesn't leave!

The PERFECT weekday schedule IMHO:
5AM-7AM: Don Lemon & Brooke Baldwin. Both I say aren't the best at CNN but Jeff Zucker doesn't plan to fire anyone and I think they are perfect at waking up to and they have that charisma to start the day off right. What I see being done during those morning hours suits them best I feel. (Atlanta)
7AM-9AM: John Berman & Ashleigh Banfield. The absolute perfect morning team in my opinion to compete with other morning shows. Both are funny, smart, and witty. They would make a very comforting morning team in my opinion. (New York)
9AM-11AM: Erin Burnett & Ali Velshi. I'm not really a fan of Erin Burnett but Jeff Zucker wants to move her to mornings and so being realistic about my scheduling thoughts, I need to include her in this. Both of them are great at financial news so it would be the perfect team at this time of day considering the New York Stock Exchange opens at 9:30AM. (New York)
11AM-1PM: Hala Gorani & Michael Holmes for a new two hour international news program. They are the perfect team. (Atlanta)
1PM-3PM: Kate Bolduan & Joe Johns. They would make a great team anchoring from Washington.
3PM: Simulcast Christiane Amanpour's half hour program with CNN US.
3:30PM: Simulcast Isha Sesay's NewsCenter half hour program with CNN US.
4PM: Jake Tapper from Washington, as predicted.
5PM-7PM: The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, from Washington. Revert the show back to 2 solid hours.
7PM: I would love to see Fareed Zakaria in prime time. He would be beyond great.
8PM: Ann Curry will reportedly take this time slot if hired by CNN. Should be interesting.
9PM: Anderson Cooper should move to this time slot.
10PM: Soledad O'Brien deserves to be in prime time. Her and Anderson are great at keeping people accountable.
11PM: Piers Morgan. Even though I'm not a big fan, Jeff Zucker does plan to move his time slot up and I think this is a good time.
12AM-5AM: Reruns of primetime or CNNI Simulcast.
I would just like to say that Wolf Blitzer is on the air way too much. I am so sick of him. There are other talented people on CNN.
I hope that CNN is smart enough to step back and let viewers really experience the Obama 2nd Inauguration.
Forget the commentary and let it be about the sights and sound. CNN needs to tone down their coverage right now it is too ideological. There we be millions who
watch the inauguration but not CNN. It is more about the news and the event itself. Not about CNN.
Please keep in mind that 360 gets the highest demos for CNN. That is the money maker for CNN. That is how all networks, broadcast and cable make money. Cable news is a business. Right now the 8 & 10 PM hours are most profitable at CNN. Here's the deal : if you drop 1 hour of 360 , the replacement would have to equal the demo to make money. If the ratings are lower, that makes the hour less profitable for the hour. CNN has zero room for error.
Changing anchors normally does not work, it is more about formats and content. finding ways to connect with viewers,delivery and likability. No one will watch people they don't like on television.
Solo female show hosts don't work on CNN. So going the Ann Curry route does not make sense. Beec there done that. Erin Burnett, Paula Zahn Campbell Brown. CNN exhibits the definition of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.Do something different and have a show that has never existed in cable news.
This should be the new CNN prime time lineup :
7 PM, Conor Knighton gives us his take on the news.
Most nights there is not going to be a big news story
for CNN to garner ratings. He has gotten the attention of Esquire and other publications.
8 PM, Anderson Cooper 360. Keep a familiar show in prime time to kick things off.
9 PM Ladies news show with a diverse group of female journalists. Go with a format like the Talk.
That is much better counter-programming opposite
THRMS. Advertisers would buy commercial time in a
heartbeat.
At 10 PM, go with George Stroumboulopoulos doing a live news oriented interview show. That way CNN gets a jump on Conon, Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel,
Letterman and Leno. CNN can't top these guys head to head.
In the event there is breaking news you would have
Anderson and all of the female journalists available.
You can't have people sitting reading the news anymore. CNN is in serious need of an upgrade.
CNN has to generate some positive press. Something that is tangible that can make potential viewers say I might check that out.
CNN should go with a hipster Nightline at 11 PM.
Hire Kaj Larsen, Mariaana Van Zeller, Adam Yamaguchi, Christof Putzel, Jason Silva and Maz
Lugavere. This would also beef up CNN's reporting.
Viewers would get a lot of original reports that you
can only see on CNN. Vanguard is an award winning series because it 's truly unique.
This will help CNN expand the news.
Anon 8:50AM: CNN's primary source of income in from CNN International worldwide, around $600 million, so having two hours of AC360 wouldn't matter, not to mention that Piers Morgan had better ratings in 2012.
CNN's coverage is awful. This day belongs to President
Obama. Who cares about the future of the GOP ? This
is one of the few times when I would like to watch cable
news for hours. Yes, drop the pundits. I don't like FNC
or MSNBC either with opinion and nothing but opinion.
CNN needs to bring us events live and get out of the way. Some 1 million people are in Wash, D.C. The most
ever for a second inauguration. CNN step aside for
history and don't ruin this day for Americans who will
be watching on television or mobile devices.
Anon 9:53 AM that is not true. CNN is just coming off of it's most profitable year making 600 million dollars
from all CNN properties. That 600 million is for all of CNN not CNN International. There is CNN, HLN CNN
Digital and CNN International,etc.
We are focusing on CNN Domestic. It is the demo not
total viewers that determine the rates that CNN can charge for each commercial. Advertisers care more about the demo breakdown. 18-29,18-34,18-49
18-54 , 25-54 and on and on. Gender, education
and income are other factors as well. The actual makeup of viewership determines the value. That
is the only reason why 360 is on 2X in prime time.
Television is a very complicated business. Total viewers are not the total picture. Count the number of commercials you see on 360. Right now 360
could possibly top ED in the demo this month. It
has been widely reported that CNN uses the 18-49
demo to sell 360. By the way Nielsen is becoming less relevant. They use outdated formulas. You
have DVR's , tablets, smartphones. CNN Digital
is # 1. Most likely due to brand recognition.
