I just want to thank All Things CNN for not allowing free comments. I always enjoy reading what others have to say on this blog and the fact that your team takes the time out to monitor each one makes a big difference. I cannot stand how other sites don't take the time to approve comments. Thanks!

Here is what I think will happen with Jeff Zucker and CNN US. He will continue to make big changes (which I hope works out), however after 2 years IF his plan fails, he will replace CNN US with CNN INTERNATIONAL and bring along all the major US anchors to it. Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper already simulcast their shows with CNN International so that would stay, having both air during prime time US hours. He would perhaps also bring along Soledad O'Brien, Chris Cuomo, and one or two others to be part of programming and will have John King and Gloria Borger as their Washington correspondents, eliminating all opinionated pundits. Any major event, whether it's breaking news or a political event is already simulcasted between the two channels anyway, so it would work out definitely in my view.

Anonymous said...

This is great news! However, I wish Newsroom International could expand to 2 hours rather than just 60 minutes and that it was Hala Gorani alongside Michael Holmes.

Anonymous said...

I'm liking the new Talk Back show at 9:30AM with Carol Costello.

Anonymous said...

@3:20PM: I wish that would happen NOW!

Anonymous said...

Chris Cuomo has said on Twitter that the upcoming new morning show will air from 6:00AM-9:00AM which makes me wonder about what the fate of Early Start is and if the 5:00AM hour will still exist. I'm sure CNN will definitely keep John Berman but if I had to take a wild guess, it's bye bye Zoraida.

Anonymous said...

Have Robin Meade move to CNN to co-host the new morning show with Chris Cuomo and have Brooke Baldwin move over to HLN to take over Morning Express. It would totally make a better fit for everyone. I've noticed Robin Meade on CNN a few times lately and enjoy her. Zucker will have a failed morning show if he pairs Erin Burnett with Cuomo. Keep her as a financial correspondent or let her go.

Anonymous said...

I think that Piers Morgan should be replaced by Bob Costas.
I also think Robin Meade should be on a panel show in primetime.
I also hope that Soledad O'Brien is not given a primetime show.

Here's show idea for CNN to carry a live 2 hr show from 10 PM until midnight called the CNN MEGA
NEWS MIX 120. It's all you will need before you call it a night. It is a mashup with news and music with interesting topics and guests. It's news , culture, live guests, musical guests from all genres. It could be
Esperanza Spalding, Edward Sharpe, Bruno Mars,
Kendrick Lamor, Taylor Swift. Alamba Shakes. Think about who is really up that time of night. Get viewers
used to the new faces by having them share hosting
duties with the familiar faces at CNN.

Here's an example for the Chuck Hagel nomination.
There is a line from the song Super Bon Bon by Soul
Coughing that says move aside and let the man go through, you would see video of Hagel with the song
in the background. Next Anderson would say not so
fast, Senate Republicans had other plans deciding to hold things up., a couple of soundbites. Next Chris
would be by a monitor with a graphic with Hagel with the words delaying tactics , Cumo would say something like, can you say filibuster, and give
more details. Next up would be Isha Sesay saying of
course the will be confirmed in about a week, she would be stand next to a different graphic of Heael with the words, you have been approved. Then the
last host would welcome viewers and toss to the
show open without a doubt Conor Kinghton could easily come up with something each night to tease
us about the news that will be on the show. You
have to watch the show to find out who the guests
will be. Viewers would have to keep watching because they don't know what is coming up. You could even use Trouble by Nick Waterhouse for
Chuck Hagel. Be unpredictable to keep viewers for
the full 2 hours. You would use cool bump music in and out of commercials. You could even use the Huey Piano Smith song Don't You Just Know it from
the sneaker commercial. You could have a playlist only available on the website and ask viewers to
provide their ideas for music for the show.

There could be a segment on Donald Byrd, the legendary jazz musician who recently passed away. I did not know until I say it on The New Republic, what is even more fascinating is it turns out that his
music has been widely sampled in rap/ hip hop.
Have a guest on the show who can tell us all about
the man. I recently discovered a song of his called
Where Are We Going ? Give viewers something to walk away with.

Good the see that CNN is committing to international news. Now give it two hours. I hope CNN changes the tone of cable news. That is the primary reason why I don't watch as much cable news as I once did. How low can FNC be mocking a 102 year old lady who waited hours to vote. I don't like it when CNN copies the mean people at FNC. I refuse to watch the network or MSNBC for the same reasons. I don't care for the mean pundits on CNN.

Anonymous said...

My favorite CNN shows are 360, News Room
International, Next List and GPS.

Maybe that will work for a morning show on
CNN. Just call it 180 minutes. I don't see why
it would not work for a morning show just
switch it and say the news you missed while
you were sleeping. Like the idea for a 2 hour
show during that time on CNN. It's good
concept for CNN to attract viewers who would
not necessarily watch CNN. I get where you are
going about not telling viewers what they will
see coming up on the show. No pundits please.
Good way to keep viewers watching.

It could be a theme for CNN. It would be how
the day begins and ends on the network.

Have you guys noticed that CNN is using the crawl to give us the full story ? Good move. I hope it is updated every 15 minutes. Can we get sports scores and news in all categories too ? Would be nice to see more sports
highlights and interviews. If you are going to keep the crawl, use it as a news feed grid where the stories appear to upload with a menu. Heck, even throw in tweets from CNN reporters who are covering the news.
Why not even questions in the mix providing the
answer by giving the details of the story. I want to more about the NBA player who is also an artist.

Anonymous said...

CNN has always used a crawl. The only time you don't see it is in prime time. Also if it was up to me, I would completely eliminate it. Way too much writing happening on screen. On a side note, for the past week, CNN's LIVE bug hasn't been working properly. It's showing up on pre-recorded segments which can get confusing.

Anonymous said...

Michael Holmes is a great journalist, and a nice person in real life as well.

CNN should let him out in the field more.

More of the CNN-I people on CNN Domestic is only a good thing.

Anonymous said...

Yes, the crawl at the bottom, was at times useless, on CNN.
An unidentified person would be speaking for twenty minutes about a subject the viewers knew nothing about, until the crawl caught up with the film being projected.
This seems like an easy fix to someone who knows zero about production. But it took what, ten years for someone to say, this piece needs narration?
First rule: All stories need a good narrator or nobody will listen.

Anonymous said...

The graphics on CNN are too big and intrusive. Redesign all of the graphics. From what I have seen this morning the crawl says top stories. It would be cool for CNN to sync up the crawl with the stories being featured. Redesign the logo and live bug.

CNN should create another use for the crawl. Just use pictures, video, words on the screen that the story and music. You need no narration just use the pics, video and words to tell us the story. It is constantly updated and is really fresh every 15 minutes. CNN has an amazing app for the I-pad.
CNN should work with software engineers who can
design specific apps for CNN on television. Stop blocking the video , television is a visual medium.
It is a matter of properly framing every thing. IMHO whenever you have a map, infographics and animation you should never have those pesky banners. It is just too much clutter on the screen
ESPN gets it too work with the menu on the left
side of the screen with everything on a single line
banner and you can clearly see all of the video.

Love the idea for the new 2 hr show on CNN. Anderson Cooper, Chris Cuomo & Isha Sesay are already at CNN and I have seen Conor Knighton make appearances on CNN from time to time. He works for CBS so I am not sure CNN would be able to get him but they need to try.
Infomania was once the highest rated show on Current.
A looser atmosphere with news, interesting topics and people , live performances would be refreshing. Definitely no pundits. CNN should try experimenting with a show like this right now. Besides it could help viewers gain a comfort level with Chris Cuomo.

Anonymous said...

Those of you have been advocating a news program
aimed at women are on to something. Adweek has a
fascinating article on CNN. It turns out that shows
like Inside Man, Parts Unknown and Rachel Nichols
sports show are easier sales for networks. I believe
these names have been mentioned : Betty Nguyen,
Isha Sesay, Nicole Lapin and a female from CNN
Espanol. If CNN would commit to a show like this in
prime time at 9 PM , advertisers would buy time.

Anonymous said...

Heads up CNN has a brand new crawl. It is on News
Room International. Much better.

Anonymous said...

I'm already a bit dizzy from being distracted by the return of the CNN moving crawl. This upsets me. I really wish they would get rid of it all together!

Anonymous said...

@9:31AM: The graphics are too big?!?!?!?! Are you kidding me! I can barely read it! I hate that it's all lowercased.

Anonymous said...

Will the rest of the CNN graphics eventually match the
ticker ? Hopefully, a CNN logo makeover is in the works and will be coming to the screen soon.

Anonymous said...

CNN should go back to the blue crawl they had yesterday. It was much easier on the eyes. There are always potential problems with using so much white for television. It looks bad for HD TV. Had to turn the channel. It is not eye friendly at all.

Anonymous said...

Does Jeff Zucker realize that pundits are what ruined Starting Point and John KIng, USA ? It's is not an 80's or 90's world, yet CNN can't seem to get away from that mindset. If you want shows like Starting Point to work you have to be more like UP With Chris Hayes or Melissa Harris Perry. I am surprised that CNN has not gone at Ezra Klein others who create GIFs, infographic, flash animation and other techniques to enhance story-telling and making all topics interesting. Why can't there be a trailer with Jake Tapper, John King, Wolf Blitzer, Candy Crowley explaining what Sequester means .
Break it down to 5 major points. It is done like a film
trailer with music, words on screen and a display of
awesome editing skills. Use the song The Sky Is Breaking Up Jim from Mark Boone. Make these available for free downloads at CNN.dot.com.

Anonymous said...

You could also use Reckoner from Radiohead, Gimme Shelter from the Stones or Riders In the Storm from the Doors. The point is to have multiple 30 ,60 or 90 second films that school us on different aspects of the looming sequester.

Cable news is finished. Anytime crybaby reporters
are complaining about not being able to get video
of President Obama playing golf, you know they are
clueless about what news actually is all about. It is
apparent that the Washington press corps needs a
serious reality check. The world does not revolve
around them. Quit your whining and grow up.

To the person (people?) who continue to post suggestions for music to be played on CNN: Are you aware that there is a cost associated with licensing music?
While it's an interesting concept we don't think it's worth spending much time pondering given CNN’s history of frugality.

Anonymous said...

Didn't AC 360 once play cool music ? The music was
very much a part of the show. CNN could easily reach
a deal with record companies to feature music. There
is always interest in songs featured in commercials
and TV shows. It benefits multiple parties. You hear
a song on CNN. Go to I-tunes. It's not like the music
industry couldn't use a boost. CNN could be the place
to discover music of all genres. The news goes viral
and CNN gets increased traffic to the website because
the downloads would be available for free.

Anonymous said...

CNN is owned by Time Warner. In all likelihood they
pay a fee to ASCAP, HBO uses music all of the time.

Anonymous said...

I don't know what to believe about what you read about
CNN. Take it with a grain of salt. However, CNN is a
work in progress. We are a very long way from knowing
how CNN will evolve under Jeff Zucker. CNN haters will
not like anything the man does but that should not
stop CNN from experimenting. It's arrogant to assume
anyone knows what viewers will watch. We get to
vote with our remotes by reacting to what we see.

Anonymous said...

Is it just me or does it seem like CNN is getting back to operating like ABC, NBC & CBS dispatching reporters to
news that is going on. For examples, the diamond heist and KC explosion. Good to see. There are millions of news or interesting people all around the world. You won't discover them sitting in a studio. it would be great to see CNN get back into the news business. CNN
needs to be a journalism hub. Don't be ashamed to stand up for the news and help us discovered the world and learn something watching CNN. Today's journalists have so many resources at the click of a mouse. CNN can have smart conversation and segments that have a point and that can give the
viewers something to walk away with.

Anonymous said...

Love Suzanne Malveaux and Michael Holmes together on CNN News Room International. IMHO it is the best edition of CNN News Room. Love the chemistry and flow of the show. Kudos to CNN.

Anonymous said...

Robin Meade has music for Morning Express so
CNN could use music if it wanted .

I worry that CNN is too busy following what has come to be called undernews. It is basically untrue news that is circulated in conservative media outlets. CNN has gotta distance itself from what Joe calls the echo chamber especially with the news today about the misinformation campaign against Chuck Hagel. A NY
Daily News reporter is admitting it was suppose to be a joke. Somehow a friends of Hamas joke was used by GOP senators to attack Hagel. It was all based on a joke and CNN hyped up video of Ted Cruz and others attacking Chuck Hagel. Amazing how this has earned Cruz an invite to TSR. CNN is suppose to have standards and principles. It is hard to believe what you see on the news these days.

Anonymous said...

Let's face it, CNN has a very long way to go. It will take
years to fix the mess that CNN has become. Right now
CNN is not a major player but FOX has to try and hold
off MSNBC, they are likely to overcome FOX in the demo and that is major news.TRMS just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Smart TV gets viewers.

Anonymous said...

I hope this isn't true but it's being reported that Soledad O'Brien is on her way out of CNN. What a total shame if this is true. She deserves a role in primetime.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know how many international bureaus CNN has around the world ? Just curious with AJE set to make a push in the Untied States. AJE has some deep
pockets and is willing to spend money.

Anonymous said...

CNN is in dire need of a complete graphics makeover. There is way too much junk on the screen. Everything is too busy. Does not work at all.

Anonymous said...

Sadly, I think it is true that Soledad is leaving CNN.
BIg mistake to bring Erin Burnett to the mornings.
Surely CNN knows Burnett can't stay in prime time
but to boot Soledad for Erin Burnett will prove to
be another self inflicted wound for CNN.

Anonymous said...

Here comes Conan and Leno the sequel. How in the world does Erin Burnett top Soledad O'brien. How many times has she been busted for being wrong on the facts. It's a mistake and so is Jake Tapper.

Anonymous said...

I'll watch Soledad wherever she goes. I'll be really disappointed in CNN if she is let go. Burnett can't hack it in her timeslot now, what makes them think she'll be ratings gold in the morning? I'm guessing they think Cuomo will carry the show. Good luck with that. I won't watch Burnett.

Anonymous said...

Soledad O'Brien definitely deserves a prime time show on CNN. I think she is a great interviewer and just like Anderson is great at holding people accountable, great at reporting, broadcasting breaking news, and LIVE tv in general. I don't think she should get Erin Burnett's 7:00PM hour considering it wouldn't do much but rather the 9:00PM hour. Here is an outline of how I think CNN should have its prime time schedule:

4PM: Jake Tapper
5PM: Kate Bolduan
6PM: Wolf Blitzer
7PM: Wolf Blitzer
8PM: Anderson Cooper
9PM: Soledad O'Brien
10PM: Reported Big New Hire
11PM: New Show

If CNN must keep Piers Morgan, move him to weekends or better yet have him only air on CNN International. Erin Burnett needs to be let go. There are others that would make a better fit next to Chris Cuomo in the morning like Robin Meade, Ashleigh Banfield, or (and I can't believe I'm saying this) Brooke Baldwin. Morning news is more free and isn't as hard as the rest of the day.

Anonymous said...

Surprisingly, 360 is showing strength this month so you have to wonder if this is more about the right lead in for 360 at 7. 360 could possibly top ED in viewers and demos. That is big new and concerns for MSNBC.

Anonymous said...

I am so glad that Soledad O'Brien appeared on The Wendy Williams Show this morning to address her CNN situation. It seems that she will NOT leave the network but is discussing her future role, whether it be documentaries, or what she obviously REALLY wants...a prime time show. I HIGHLY think she is qualified for a prime time show. MSNBC has Rachel, FOX has Greta, CNN should have Soledad. Whether you agree with her views or not, I truly feel she would be the perfect female to add to CNN prime time, and I agree with a previous comment about the 9p.m. time slot or maybe even later. Connie Chung, Paula Zahn, Campbell Brown, and Erin Burnett all had the 7PM hour. Have a women in a later hour. That women should be Soledad O'Brien. JMHO...

Anonymous said...

Anon 12:01 AM - CNN has about 45 bureaus to AJE's 65. And some of 45 bureaus of CNN's are closed and we can thank Jim Walton for that.

Anonymous said...

It's simple make her a part of a women's ensemble news show featuring female journalists. CNN keeps trying to get something going with pundits and is destroying careers in the process. It's more about the formats and content than anything else.

Anonymous said...

2:53pm
I have to make one small correction to your post... Campbell Brown had the 8pm timeslot that AC360 has now. She and Zahn were much better and more accomplished journalists than Burnett. It was some tough competition but Andy hasn't improved the ratings since she was there so getting rid of her was another bad call by CNN.

Anonymous said...

Read the Stelter at NY Times - Obrien is leaving, sort of. She will be doing docs but non-exclusive to CNN. She will have her own production company. In essence, she is leaving. Its a real shame. I can't believe they wouldn't give her a shot in the evenings. How can you be dumb enough to think Burnett would be a hit in the evening and then think Soledad wouldn't work in primetime? CNN totally has it backwards. Burnett should just be let go, she is terrible.

CNN hardly has 45 bureaus. Try half that number.

CNN has

Beijing
Tokyo
Seoul
Hong Kong
Delhi
Islamabad (empty)
Kabul (empty)
Abu Dhabi
Istanbul
Beirut
Cairo
Jerusalem
Rome
Paris
Moscow
Berlin
Madrid
Nairobi
Lagos
Joburg
London

Nothing in Latin America, but there is CNN Espanol.

Bangkok and Jakarta were shut last year.

Management may try and fudge the numbers and say they have more bureaus, but that just means a stringer with a celll phone.

And you can thank Parisa Khosravi for the downsizing.

According to the NYPost, Joy Behar of The View, may be the next hire for CNN.
She was seen having a long conversation with Jeff Zucker this past week and according to the Post, her ratings were high on HLN.
My question, why did they cancel her show?
Joy may well be a good substitue for Piers Morgan and a little easier to tolerate, although something tells me, Piers, is not going anywhere soon.

Anonymous said...

I do not know whether anyone else found this objectionable, and off topic, but I will post it anyway because it is, after all news worthy.
Why was it necessary to have The First Lady televised at the Oscar presentations?
I know or we know, that Hollywood gave huge donations to the Obamas, that is no secret.
But when politics interfers publically with entertainment, than
I see this as a conflict of interests.
Yes, 'Holywood' loves the Obamas, and they have enough money per A-lister to cover his entire campaign, but little supporters, like myself, are a bit offended when, Michelle, who has nothing what so ever, to do with acting, is allowed to appear, front and center, because everyone just loves her in LaLa Land.
Well Clint Eastwood, had to close his eyes, if he attended, but still.
Conflict of interests, whether Democrat or Republican is simply wrong and Michelle Obama has more class than to promote herself and the Adminstration in this manner.
End of rant.

Anonymous said...

For those unhappy viewers suffering with Erin Burnett, her reign may be over.
According to TVN, Jeff Zucker may have had a change of heart after meeting with a delegation of Afro-American journalists.
CNN's latest dispatch was that Zucker was still looking for someone compatible to co-achor a morning show with his pick, Chris Cuomo.
Which leads us to believe, poor little Erin may not be his first choice after all.
