Your Views on the News, 6/21/13

It's been a busy week with New Day hitting the airwaves, a new Strombo episode tonight and Morgan Spurlock's new show premiering on Sunday.  Here's the place to give us your opinion on anything and everything CNN related.

I really like New Day. I like Kate and Michaela. I am not sure yet about Chris Cuomo. I really like all the news they present and the fast pace. I haven't seen one pundit. It was great on Friday with an appearance by Anderson.

Love Strombo. The Bill Maher interview was classic. To me he is like a hipster Charlie Rose. At the same time New Day is a work in progress. Sometimes it's good other times no so much.

I agree - New Day has potential. Still working out the kinks and chemistry takes a while to develop. Michaela is the breakout star - everyone I talk to is instantly in love! Anderson's appearance on Friday was great - who knew he could be so loose and funny that early in the morning. He hit it off with everybody. Kate and Chris are still trying a bit too hard. They still need to work on story selection - viral videos are funny and lighten the mood but there are too many youtube videos. Stick with the news and featuring the CNN reporters - that's the winning move. Also, CNN needs to not be afraid to play stories that challenge the powerful establishment. Lots of stories regarding wall street corruption, bank settlements, and now enron jeff skilling getting his sentence reduced. Feel good stories are nice but they need to keep up with the hard news.

New Day did have pundits on Tuesday I believe. That was when I turned the channel. The show would not
work without Michaela. Didn't watch on Friday.

After listening to Friday's edition of 360, I got the feeling that Anderson Cooper was sympathetic towards Paula Deen.
I may be wrong, but that is what he seemed to be implying.
Even in Ms. Deen's apology, which seemed insincere, in her transcript from the NYPost when asked in her deposition, she replied to the questioning of her use of inappropriate language with, "Why yes, of course."
Of course???
Is this lady for real? She answered it as though she were asked, "Is it still raining outside?"
The Food Network did the right thing.
She may be a great cook and an appealing southern personality, but who in their right mind wants to follow a recipe from a bigot?

While I once thought that James Gandolfini was a very fine, wonderful actor, I am beginning to have my doubts, about "his acting."
From all accounts, there was trouble on the set of the Sopranos that is just now coming to light.
There was "binge drinking," where he would disappear for days, and his ex-wife did not have many good things to say about his character.
We are left with the question about his role in the Sopranos, a role made for him: Was HE ACTING?
Or was he acting like himself without the crime, and murder and mob associations that went along with his character?
By all accounts he abused his body.
He was "larger than life," and his last meal was according to the NYPost, "fit for a king."
Whatever, we might start to look back in retrospect and rethink those Emmys for best dramatic actor.

I am enjoying New Day very much! If you ask me, I think the show would have been way more successful with it being hosted by Chris Cuomo and Michaela Pereira. I don't feel the need for a third host. I am seeing an entirely new side to Kate Bolduan that I am not really enjoying. It seems a little bit fake. I prefer her much more in Washington alongside Wolf Blitzer again or better yet, she should have gotten her own dayside hours. She seems more serious then. With Jeff Zucker controlling CNN now, you never know what will happen. If he doesn't like something, he can easily change it up.

As for New Day Weekend, I highly enjoyed Victor Blackwell and Alison Kosik this morning. Hopefully they can permanently be named weekend hosts.

Boy is the American media ever slow to catch on. Yesterday there was a newspaper in Hong Kong that was reporting that he was in a safe house and talking with Chinese authorities, Why do you think China let him get out of Hong Kong. He gave them information.
Yet again the media morons got played and failed to ask the proper questions of Glenn Greenwald and Ed Snowden. So now CNN and others look not so bright. Not 1 journalist was willing to ask tough questions about Snowden and what was really going on. 3 strikes you are out. Benghazi, IRS % Snowden. This is 100 % proof that there are no longer real news organizations are a complete failure. The media thought they were getting a big scoop so they just gave people a free pass. By the way CNN no one trust the media on this story either. CNN and others put people on their networks put people on their channels to portray Snowden as a hero. Biggest losers are Huffington Post, Guardian, Washington Post. By the way they are only slight ahead of CNN and all of the others who failed .

I don't know what news you are seeing but I certainly don't see the media calling Snowden a hero. There is a vocal group of people, mostly younger folks, who like what he did, but the media I have seen has been pretty clear that is not the view of everyone. Heck, Toobin on CNN basically called Snowden a traitor. The IRS issue has been exhaustively explored. People have been trying to pin this on the White House personally directing the IRS but that simply didn't happen. As for Benghazi, I thought CNN has the most comprehensive coverage and was the most fair.

On Benghazi, Fast and Furious, IRS, NSA/Snowden, CNN has been anything BUT fair. They will jump on any conspiracy or story that they think will damage the Obama Administration and book anyone who has an ax to grind against the president and give them whatever platform they want to express it. Candy Crowley and John King were at it again today with the NSA case. The reporting on CNN is not honest or balanced. They sat on their hands during the Bush administration's crimes but don't want to bother reporting accurately and fairly on President Obama, instead they parrot GOP talking points and gleefully book liberals who have an agenda against the administration. Not fair in the slightest.

TVN has a clip of Kate Boulduan actually following Nick Wallenda, on a high wire, in her barefeet.
A New Day looks as though it could be a hit if they do interesting things that are out of the ordinary, like this.
Of course the wire was lowered for Kate, and she held on, but we applaud her bravery and light heartedness in trying.
These are the kinds of things that do wake you up in the morning and Kate was cheery and delightful, not at all like she was in the SIT room.

Anonymous said...

Surprise!
The Discovery channel it seems ran away with the ratings this past weekend with Nik Wallenda's walk.
Viewers are into excapism, and betting on trials like the Zimmermann case may in fact prove to be a ratings dud, at least until the verdict.

The backlash is on for cable news. Just check out the ratings for cable news on Monday on TV BY THE NUMBERS. CNN, MSNBC & FNC all backed Snowden and now the truth comes out. Not 1 reporter asked the right questions. Also, the IRS also looked a progressive groups too. There are huge credibility issues. Even FNC has lower than usual numbers.

It sure seems like Anderson has been upping his game lately. I guess its because that daytime adventure is no longer a distraction. Too bad the ratings for Burnett and Morgan (as I like to call Dumb and Dumber) are killing Cooper's shows. When is CNN going to do something about the deadweight?

Anonymous said...

"It seems like Anderson has been upping his game lately."
Really?
How so? Just because he's speaking to Marcia Clark doesn't mean he's upping his game.
Marcia Clark lost the OJ case and she was a terrible prosecutor, if I remember correctly and her friend Mark, from the OJ trial, was no better.
Viewers are not interested in "has beens." Check the ratings on TVN for the 10PM hour. Not the best.

The Arias trial was like a live murder thriller with a topping of kinky sex.

The Martin/Zimmerman case is extremely ugly, the actual incident not even that important apparently and saturated with racism. It painfully illustrates the huge racism problems and racial devide in the US and comes with loads of baggage, so no wonder it is not as appealing as the Arias trial.

Not that any of this should have been made into entertainment programs in the first place.

There is still a racial divide in this country, and the Zimmerman case clearly is an example of racism on trial.
Also on trial is a self imposed vigilante, in order to maintain order, which in this case, was out of order.

OK. The verdict is in. Paula Deen sat down with Matt Lauer today and told us all that if we've never "sinned" we should pick up a bolder and throw at our flatscreens and hit her in the head."
Paula, you may keep on cooking. I personally give you permission.
But in the future it may be a good idea for you to cook with your mouth shut.
The more you speak, the dumber you sound, especially the part where you admitted to saying: "Most jokes are about Jews, rednecks, like yourself, and blacks."
Now not only have you insulted one minority group...you went on to insult two more.
Cook away Paula, BUT PLEAZE DO US ALL A FAVOR, AND STOP SPEAKING!
We've had more than enough of your Southern charm to spare us a lifetime.
This clip is on TVN for viewing.

The problem with Rachel Jeantel is that she is not a credible witness.
Her conversation was over a phone.
It does not matter whether she can or cannot read cursive handwriting, or that she is being grilled by white attorneys from the prehistoric dinosaur age.
The problem remains that she wasn't THERE.
No one was and everything leads to one conclusion: reasonable doubt.
In this particular case there will always be "reasonable doubt" so why waste time and money on something we know will end the same way it started.
The question remains was it murder or self defense and in Florida, it will be self defense, and no one will be happy. Justice will never be served so why hold a trial.
The only ones who will benefit are the attorneys!

Anonymous said...

Why is everyone so interested in whether Rachel Jeantel was coached
in saying: "Get off. Get off."
Yes, this is damaging to the plaintiff but what is more damaging to Trayvon Martin's defense is Rachel herself.
Someone, and it should have been the attorney for Trayvon, should have schooled her in how to dress for "success" in the courtroom.
Obviously she didn't have a clue and needed coaching in how to answer when questioned.
How in the world could she be considered a "key" witness?
This is not a racial statement. If Rachel had been white and showed up wearing hoops the size of a circus ring, I'd say the same.
Presentation is "key" and often what you say or don't comes later.
Yes, she'd be far more credible, if she lost "the attitude and the earrings," and it is the JOB of the attorneys to tell her so.

Because I do not have an account with Google I will say this here.
I watched WWHL for exactly five minutes last nite and while I enjoy Andy Cohen with the Housewives, I didn't appreciate his drooling approach to poor Cher.
And worse yet, bringing on Anderson to also oogle and drool.
Both of them need to act their age and grow up. Being 'Gay' doesn't give you permission to "act like a fool."
Needless to say, I used my remote before Anderson came on.

Ok, this is not a Zimmerman Trial blog site.

Anonymous said...

While this is not a Zimmerman trial blog site, it is news worthy and it IS being discussed around the country or all three cable networks wouldn't be covering every aspect of it diligently every day.

Anonymous said...

To the commenter who gave AC/360 a D
for content on ATA and then saying "It pains me for giving Anderson a D because "he's so gosh darn adorable," and pained me to type that, his adorableness has nothing to do with delivering a show with NO QUALITY.
Say it and be done with it.
Chris Hayes is delivering a better quality show because of content and you know it. Stop with the excuses already

I just removed CNN and HLN from my TV presets. You at least used to be able find a little news (not much), but now they have become just reality/tabloid channels showing localized, salacious court cases. I had to go to BBC America today to find out about the firefighters in AZ and what is happening in Cairo. CNN and HLN continue to progress rapidly toward Paddy Chayefsky's "Newtork" level of professionalism. Sad. It is embarrassing when foreign visitors see the lack of quality news (except PBS) on US airwaves and the continual dumbing down of the general population.

CNN continues to do sloppy reporting.
TVN is reporting that CNN inadvertently showed Zimmerman's Social Security Number today during the televised trial....to millions of viewers!
My question: How come the OTHER networks didn't show this?
I hope that Zimmerman and his attorneys sue Zucker for 'breech of privacy.' Now AC can start gathering a panel of talkers for this pending lawsuit.
They have a pretty good case.
CNN has become lazy, and sloppy, and thoughtless. No wonder their shows lack content.
Absolutely no content unless it is fed to them via the internet.

Looks as though Zimmerman is going to get a "slap on the wrist," and set free.
I am convinced that the prosecution
did not come close to showing us any evidence that this was a racially motivated case.
I know that putting Trayvon's mother on the stand is an emotional "try" but all parents think their children are wonderful and not capable of doing wrong.
So would she make a good witness?
Probably not. She wasn't there and even though she says she can recognize "her babies' voice, I think "her baby" was looking for some trouble and unfortunately, he found it.
Her testimony certainly wouldn't sway someone like me.

Anonymous said...

Zimmerman started this. He was told not to follow Trayvon but did anyhow. None of this would've happened if he had stayed away from Trayvon like he was told to. Trayvon was NOT looking for trouble, GZ was and naturally he's going to get away with murder. He had the gun. He was not fearing for his life, he was out to get a young black man because he was angry and figured he'd get away with it.

Anonymous said...

"You can't claim self defense if you instigated the entire situation."
That is a quote from an ATA commenter in reference to the Zimmerman trial.
But you can claim self defense if you 'didn't' instigate the situation that transpired and no one knows what that actually was, except Zimmerman.
So the prosecution has yet to prove that Zimmerman was the instigator and that he really wasn't jumped by Trayvon.
But then I'm one who always believed OJ killed his wife, and now look where he is....in prison, for a lesser crime.

Anonymous said...

None of this would have happened if the police did what they were supposed to do, and complied when they were called to the complex about 'suspicious characters casing the place.'
While I agree that Zimmerman never should have gotten out of the car, the prosecution has yet to prove that this case was "racially motivated."
People are allowed to carry weapons
and they are also allowed to defend themselves when necessary.
No one has proven that it wasn't necessary. The rest is supposition.
