CNN Growth Continues

CNN CONTINUES TO POST MOST GROWTH IN CABLE NEWS

CNN Has Ratings Gains Across the Board in August while FXNC and MSNBC Shed Viewers Throughout All Dayparts

New Day” is Up +36% in Total Viewers and +18% in 25-54 Ratings vs. CNN Programming a Year Ago;
AC 360 Ranks Second On Cable News at 8pm

MSNBC’s Flagship Program “The Rachel Maddow Show” Loses 47% of its Audience; FXNC Has Lowest Ratings in a Decade


CNN continued to post the most growth in cable news this month – increasing its audience in all key dayparts -- while FXNC and MSNBC had major ratings declines throughout all of its dayparts during the month of August compared to a year ago:

TOTAL DAY (6A-6A):
CNN – up +13% in demo 25-54 rating (108k vs. 96k) / up +7% in total viewers (347k vs. 325k)
MSNBC – down -32% in demo rating (120k vs. 176k) / down -28% total viewers (349k vs. 487k)
FXNC – down -24% in demo rating (193k vs. 254k) / down -10% in total viewers (968k vs. 1.079m)

M-F PRIMETIME (8-11P):
CNN – up +7% in demo 25-54 rating (133k vs. 124k) / up +10% in total viewers (468k vs. 426k)
MSNBC – down -44% in demo rating (155k vs. 278k) / down -43% in total viewers (554k vs. 978k)
FXNC – down -24% in demo rating (305k vs. 402k) / down -16% in total viewers (1.796m vs. 2.127m)

M-Su PRIMETIME (8-11P):
CNN – up +9% in demo 25-54 rating (135k vs. 124k) / up +6% in total viewers (454k vs. 427k)
MSNBC - down -32% in demo rating (178k vs. 262k) / down -36% in total viewers (528k vs. 819k)
FXNC – down -24% in demo rating (255k vs. 337k) / down -15% in total viewers (1.552m vs. 1.828m)

DAYSIDE (9A-5P):
CNN – up +12% in demo 25-54 rating (110k vs. 98k) / up +2% in total viewers (397k vs. 389k)
MSNBC – down -42% in demo rating (87k vs. 150k) / down -32% in total viewers (312k vs. 461k)
FXNC – down -25% in demo rating (185k vs. 246k) / down -12% in total viewers (1.006m vs. 1.149m)

CNN’s newest program “New Day” saw substantial ratings gains compared to CNN programming a year ago and is the only morning cable news program to increase its audience growing +18% in the key demo rating (97k vs. 82k) and +36% in total viewers (277k vs. 204k).  MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” was down -17% among 25-54 (125k vs. 150k) and decreased -9% in total viewers.  FXNC’s “Fox and Friends” also lost viewers this August, decreasing -23% in the key demo rating and was down -3% in total viewers.

MSNBC experienced major ratings declines in August losing almost one half of its M-F primetime audience, while registering its lowest total viewer delivery since December 2007, and its lowest among P25-54 since August 2006.  MSNBC, fueled this month by the strong performance of the network’s doc series “MSNBC Investigates” (Lock Up) and “MSNBC Specials” (Caught on Camera) also posted its lowest M-Su prime delivery among total viewers since December 2007. 

This month, FXNC has posted some of its lowest ratings in over a decade, registering its lowest delivery in total day and M-F/M-Su primetime since August 2001 in the key demo 25-54 rating.  FXNC also saw its lowest primetime delivery since July 2008 in total viewers.

Other CNN August highlights include:

“Erin Burnett Outfront” at 7pm posted double-digit growth this month increasing +14% from a year ago in the key demo (124k vs. 109k). EBO also ranked second this month, tying with “Hardball with Chris Matthews” in the key demo 25-54 rating.  Matthews lost a substantial number of viewers vs. a year ago, dropping -42% among 25-54 (124k vs. 214k) and was down -45% in total viewers (480k vs. 867k), posting its lowest total viewer delivery since December 2007.  “The Fox Report” at 7pm also saw audience declines, losing -34% in the demo 25-54 rating and decreasing -15% in total viewers, posting its lowest total viewers delivery since July 2008.

“AC 360” at 8pm was the #2 show on cable news topping MSNBC’s “All in with Chris Hayes” in both total viewers (515k vs. 483k) and the key demo rating (140k vs. 132k), and was the #1 show on CNN primetime in both P2+ and P25-54. “AC 360” was also the only show at 8pm to grow vs. year-ago, increasing +15% in the demo rating (140k vs. 122k) and +16% in total viewers (515k vs. 445k); while FXNC and MSNBC lost a notable amount of viewership during the time period. Hayes was down -43% in the demo (132k vs. 233k) and lost almost half of its total viewers (483k vs. 924k) compared to a year ago. MSNBC posted its lowest 8pm delivery since September 2006 in total viewers and since August 2005 in the key demo rating.   “O’Reilly” lost one quarter (-25%) of its audience in the demo and was down -10% in total viewers.  August represents “O’Reilly’s” lowest delivery since July 2008 in total viewers and lowest since May 2006 among 25-54 demo rating.

“Piers Morgan Live” saw a slight increase in total viewers (465k vs. 460k) vs. a year ago.  “The Rachel Maddow Show” shed a substantial number of total viewers – dropping -43% (634k vs. 1.109m) and registering its lowest 9pm performance since August 2008 in total viewers and lowest since December 2007 in the key demo 25-54.  “Hannity” was also down this month, losing -21% of its total viewer audience (1.611m vs. 2.040m), resulting in the program’s lowest delivery since December 2007 and lowest demo delivery since August 2001. 

Anderson Cooper at 10 pm was up +10% in the demo rating (145k vs. 132k) and +12% in total viewers (423k vs. 379k) compared to a year ago. FXNC and MSNBC also shed viewers during this time period, with “The Last Word” down -44% in P25-54 rating (160k vs. 288k) and down -41% in total viewers (603k vs. 1.018m). “On the Record” was down -15% among demo 25-54 and down -18% among total viewers.

For August 2013 MSNBC moved ahead of CNN in
the ratings. Besides MSNBC changed the lineup on
Monday and topped CNN . In reality, CNN is not
catching up to MSNBC.

@2:01pm, you are so right. Yes, CNN grew from last year but that was because they had some of the lowest ratings in 20 yrs last year! They are very close to it again now. They fell back behind MSNBC again and that's even after MSNBC has had a rough few months. CNN has thrown all they got in 2013 and they don't have much to show for it. Over time, AJAM is going to take a piece of their audience and if CNN continues to get an dumber it won't be a small piece. AJAM should recruit some people from CNNI. Can you imagine if AJAM got Hala Gorani?? That would be a killer for CNN.

"CNN Posts Most Growth In Cable News" This header is so misleading
to those who have kept score with CNN's failures to perform.
Of course they've posted the MOST growth....because they've LOST most of their audience.
And while Rachel Maddow is down 47%
it is not an election year and CNN would scoop her up in half a second
if they could, make that a milisecond.
CNN is still coming in last daily.
AND even though their "choir boy,"
Anderson is doing oh so well, according to them, he is as white as a ghost.
There was a time, when the blue background on 360 helped, and deflected his paleness and AC's silver hair made him look youthful.
Now, the minute I see him with that ghoulish expression, I flip the remore.
His friend Andy Cohen, should lend him a can of spray tan. It really would help AC's complexion and viewer reaction.

CNN get a clue. Miley Cyrus did not bring twerking to the forefront. The dance has been in hip hop/rap videos for a long time. Just because some people are just becoming aware of the dance does not mean it's not known by others. CNN needs a serious pop culture team to really stop looking so out of tough. Obviously, they are clueless about genres of music and dance. The Talk has been talking about Miley imitating the hip hop dance some months ago, At leaser The Talk knew where it come from and all about the dance. Oh and why Miley is not that good at twerking.

AJA is already influencing CNN. AJA was the first network to have live coverage of the British debate on what to do about Syria. Not too long after that CNN did the same thing and announced it would have a noon hour on Syria Looks like CNN is trying to keep AJA from getting that big breakthrough story that gets them huge ratings and challenge CNN.

CNN is losing credibility already on Syria. Comparing Syria to Iraq is ludicrous. No one has said anything about putting troops on the ground. Doctors without borders says a chemical attack happened. So why is CNN falsely comparing this with Bush/Iraq. Somewhere on along the way CNN lost it's mind.

And now a word about Maya Angelou.
She was at her best years ago when Oprah interviewed her about her ability to capture the written word, almost like a "song bird for our souls," to paraphrase the quote.
But someone has to tell Ms Angelou that "all people are not created equal." That's right. We all have different abilities. She can write, while others can not. Some are great artists and others can't draw a straight line.
Some are so talented that they can charm the birds right off the trees, while others are abrasive.
What she meant to say, and Anderson did not correct her, was that "all people should be given the same opportunities to excel in their capabilities."
Oddly Anderson didn't start to criticize President Obama in her presence, the way he does every nite, except the nite he chooses to interview a very articulate award winning, educated Afro-American cultural icon.
I wonder why?

Good for MSNBC for drawing the largest audience in response to the King anniversary and President Obama's recognition of this event, according to TVN.
At least MSNBC can proudly say that they have a LOYAL audience when the occasion arises, which is more than CNN can say, coming in a distant second.
As any viewer might say: What DOES CNN stand for anyway??
Now we know: nothing, blank, zero, nada...and the list goes on.

The ratings for cable news are about to take a huge dive. Here comes college football and the NFL on weekends. Bad move to air Parts Unknown against Sunday night NFL. By the way CNN France is prepared to participate in military action with the U.S. Misinforming is what able news does. It should come as no surprise that CNN is wrongly comparing Syria to Iraq. Now you know why people who watch cable news are the least informed.

I think you guys might be on to something. Bloomberg & AJAM are aiming for the hipster bunch. Highly educated well informed. Bloomberg is heavily covering Syria and not from a business perspective. Yes, Bloomberg is still a business netowrk but they are adding news content. Viewers don't sit and watch TV hours upon hours. For me a news junkie I like the content that Bloomberg & AJAM are doing. I get just as much news on the web and mobile. Also, there's the ability to record multiple shows. Just going with TV ratings is a small look at what is going on with the news business. CNN, MSNBC & FNC have painted themselves into a corner. They are 24/7 political talking head channels. Can you say soap operas.Nielsen is outdated and pretty much irrelevant. They are having a hard time getting people to sign up so they keep going to the same people who are older and less diverse.

Just recently, I have started hearing many tea party and other republican types question the very notion of human equality! Wow, how far backwards we have gone. What do you mean people aren't created equal? Equal does not mean same in all respects it simply means equal rights, equal treatment under the law, equal access to opportunity. Nobody promises or even suggests we all do the same thing or get paid the same amount. Republicans suggest they are the only ones protecting the documents of our founding yet you have the audacity to say we don't have equality?!?! You have lost your mind. Declaration of Independence: "we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..." Constitution... 14th Amendment... "No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law, nor deny to any person wihtin its jurisdiction the EQUAL protection of the laws." Equality is based in our very founding and how dare you attempt to redefine for your personal benefit and at the detriment of others. I can't believe these are the principles we are now re-litigating. What, are we going to bring back slavery next? This is crazy.

This blog usually is more focused on the news and CNN. It's a real shame that ideology is starting to ruin candid news conversations. The personal attacks are equally as bad. This blog is catching up to TVN. It's all political and a big turnoff. Please give us back the only decent blog for real news discussions.

MSNBC has found a way to build up Chris Hayes. All In does quick multiple interviews covering all of the angels on Syria while 360 keeps going with panels. Get to the point man.CNN trailing MSNBC on Syria is not good news and means trouble.

Blitzer read comments from the Syrian government
and it was just like CNN has been saying about
Iraq. Wow. So now CNN and media outlets are now
doing PR for Syria. CNN and other media morons
are telling Syria what to say and do.

Why the outrage? Can't stand the truth.
The Constitution refers to equal rights under the law and no one said anything about taking away those rights. But individually we DO NOT ALL HAVE THE SAME ABILITIES.
Rights and abilities are separate issues and if this bothers you personally, well perhaps I've struck a nerve, and that's just too bad.

It is really annoying when documents that were written almost 200 years ago are quoted....like the 2'nd amendment.
If you mention gun control, as Obama did in his first election bid, everyone accuses him of trying to "take away their guns."
The second Amendment refers to a militia, not an individual's right.
And now we have someone quoting the 14th Amendment as though it was the first time anyone has ever read it.
Please distinquish between rights and abilities. Not everything is governed under the framing of the Constitution, which we often refer to as "The Bill of Rights," idiot.
@10:56AM: Perhaps you should take a refresher course in the proper use of "Constitutional Law."
You seem to need it.
