Premiere Episode of New One-Hour Weekend Series Explores Food and Culture of Myanmar

Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown, hosted by the world-renowned chef, bestselling author and Emmy winning television personality, premieres on Sunday, April 14, at 9pm, ET.

The one-hour weekend lifestyle series follows Bourdain as he travels the across the globe to uncover little-known areas of the world and celebrate diverse cultures by exploring food and dining rituals. Known for his curiosity, candor, and acerbic wit, Bourdain takes viewers off the beaten path of tourist destinations - including some war-torn parts of the world - and meets with a variety of local citizens to offer a window into their lifestyles, and occasionally communes with an internationally lauded chef on his journeys. 

The premiere episode of the Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown offers an inside look at Myanmar. In his maiden voyage to the country formerly known as Burma, Bourdain and his crew discover the fabled beauty and local cuisines of a country that had been, up until recently, off-limits to outsiders.  Future episodes include tours of Libya, Colombia, the Quebecois side of Canada, Koreatown in Los Angeles, Tangier, Peru and the Congo.

Following original episodes of Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown on Sunday nights at 9pm, encores will on Friday nights at 11pm, Saturday nights at 9pm, and Sunday nights at 8pm. (all times Eastern)

The man who has brought smart, savvy conversations to Canadian television audiences in his signature interview program for nearly a decade will bring his unique brand of intimate, insightful talk to CNN.

George Stroumboulopoulos says he doesn’t just ask questions – he creates space for his guests to share their human experiences.  His fresh, thought-provoking style fuses big ideas, with art, pop culture, politics, news, sports, and celebrity.  Stroumboulopoulos invites his guests to relax and his viewers to rediscover the power of the authentic interview.  Ten episodes of new, one-hour shows with interviews have been picked up to air as a weekly series on Fridays beginning in early summer on CNN/U.S.

“We’re really pleased to bring this special series to CNN,” said Amy Entelis, senior vice president for talent and content development for CNN Worldwide.  “It is a good example of the expansion of the CNN strategy to bring new kinds of relevant and engaging programming to a broad audience,” Entelis said.  

“I feel really lucky to have been in broadcasting for 20 years up in Canada – and I’m excited to now also bring our conversations with people making the biggest news in entertainment, politics, sports, and pop culture to a whole new audience,” Stroumboulopoulos said as the network made the programming announcement.

 “George is genuinely interested in everything, which makes his interviews informative and entertaining explorations,” said Vinnie Malhotra, senior vice president of development and acquisitions for CNN Worldwide.  “This compelling series is a sharp, creative addition to our summer Friday schedule,” Malhotra said.

The well-respected and acclaimed host of the CBC’s award-winning George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight, which broadcasts from Toronto, will tape the new program in Los Angeles before a live audience – offering greater access to a diverse group of celebrities, world leaders, and trail-blazing artists.  Stroumboulopoulos will feature the public figures driving our cultural conversations and offer a fresh perspective on the interview and talk show format for CNN.

The new series will be produced by Embassy Row, a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Television.   Viewers for the new program can get to know Stroumboulopoulos now via Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

About George Stroumboulopoulos

George Stroumboulopoulos has interviewed artists and newsmakers as varied as Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Bradley Cooper, Naomi Watts, Robert Pattinson, Bono, and Clint Eastwood.  Born and raised in Ontario, “Strombo” graduated from Humber College with a diploma in radio broadcasting in 1993.  His diverse broadcast career has included talk and pop music radio production, television presenting, and hosting documentaries.  He has been honored eleven times by Canada’s prestigious Gemini Award for his television work and has been a driving force for many Canadian and international philanthropic humanitarian broadcasts, including Canada for Haiti, One Million Acts of Green, and is the first Canadian National Ambassador Against Hunger for the United Nations World Food Programme.  Currently he hosts the nightly George Stromboulopoulos Tonight on CBC television as well as the weekly music and talk program, The Strombo Show on radio.  Stroumboulopoulos is represented by Michael Sugar of Anonymous Content and William Morris Endeavor LLC.

After the failed week long experiment of (Get To) The Point and the unsteady The Lead With Jake Tapper, Jeff Zucker is looking for a blast from the past to revive CNN. The ratings-struggling cable new network is bringing back Crossfire in June, network insiders tell me. No hosts have been chosen yet, the sources say. Nor is it clear if the show will definitely remain a half hour, as the original Crossfire was, or go longer. Right now it seems that Crossfire 2.0 is slated to have a variety of CNN personalities and contributors taking up the “left” and “right” roles on the new version of the political debate show. A CNN standard almost from the begining, Crossfire ran on the network in both daytime and primetime from 1982 until it was cancelled in 2005. Crossfire isn’t the first piece of CNN history Zucker has brought back since taking over in January. The former Today show producer reinstalled James Earl Jones’ traditional “This is CNN” promo voiceover in his first week in his new gig.

TVN Reports Ali Velshi Leaving CNN

CNN’s chief business correspondent Ali Velshi is leaving the channel, TVNewser has learned.
CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker noted the change in a meeting with CNN staff today. Velshi’s last day will be Friday. Zucker said that CNN and Velshi were parting as friends, and that the channel was sorry to see him go.
“It’s been an amazing almost 12 years at CNN. Love it more today than I ever have, and CNN is going to be great under Jeff,” Velshi says. “I basically grew up here, so it’s sad to leave, but I’ve got a great opportunity to stretch some new muscles and grow something, and it appeals to my entrepreneurial side.”
Velshi joined CNN in 2001 as an anchor and reporter for the CNNfn financial news channel. He moved to CNN proper as a business correspondent and anchor in 2004 when CNNfn shut down. In addition to his correspondent duties, he also serves as the anchor of “CNN Your Money” and “World Business Today” on CNN International.
It isn’t clear where Velshi is going just yet, but Zucker said that Velshi is leaving to work on a new project that “he couldn’t pass up” according to an insider.
