CNN Anchor Nguyen to Receive Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award
Austin, TX- Betty Nguyen, a news anchor for CNN in Atlanta, Georgia, will be recognized by the Texas Exes, The University of Texas Alumni Association, at the 2008 Outstanding Young Texas Exes award ceremony, Saturday, May 17. The award, inaugurated in 1980 by the Texas Exes, annually recognizes four young alumni who are distinguished in their fields and have demonstrated a continuing interest in The University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Exes.
Nguyen was born in Saigon, Vietnam, but her family migrated to the United States at the end of the Vietnam War. She grew up in Texas and attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism.
Nguyen currently co-anchors the weekend morning edition of CNN Newsroom with T. J. Holmes. In 2003 Nguyen won a regional Emmy for her work at KTVT in Dallas, and in 2007, the Smithsonian Institute recognized Betty Nguyen as the first Vietnamese-American to anchor a national television news broadcast in the United States. There will be three Outstanding Young Texas Exes honored at the event in addition to Nguyen, including: Christina Joy Allen, Coordina to r for Grant Development and Research for La Marque Independent School District; Michael Appleman, a partner at Cantey & Hanger Law Firm in Fort Worth; and Timothy Price Crain, an aerospace engineer for NASA Johnson Space Center. The Texas Exes was founded in 1885 to praise, promote, and protect the university. Today there are nearly 85,000 members whom the association strives to connect to each other and to the past, present, and future of the university through career counseling, travel, reunions, continuing education, fellowship, and The Alcalde magazine.
