June 3rd was the last Primary of the 2008 Presidential Election. Here's an excerpt from a CNN Press Release about the final primary election night coverage:

Last night, CNN dominated the cable news competition, out-delivering both Fox News and MSNBC in primetime (8–11p) and throughout the network’s extended election coverage (8p to 2a) of the Montana and South Dakota primaries. During primetime (8-11p), CNN averaged an impressive 3.519 million total viewers, 34% more than MSNBC’s 2.627 million, and a 47% advantage over FOX News’ 2.389 million. In the key demographic P25-54 during primetime, CNN was also top-rated with 1.415 million, a 34% lead over second place MSNBC’s 1.053 million, and staggering 91% advantage over FNC’s 739k.

Throughout CNN’s extended coverage (8p–2a) the network also handily outperformed the competition with 2.529 million, MSNBC placed a distant second with 1.732 while FOX News trailed with 1.679 million total viewers. CNN also led among the P25-54 demo, averaging 1.033 million, MSNBC followed with 696k and FNC was behind with 549k.

CNN peaked with 4.525 million viewers during the 10p hour with Anderson Cooper, the only network to top 4 million for an hour.

CNN’s audience also surged online with 10.6 million unique visitors going to CNN.com for last night’s primary coverage. The Political Ticker, CNN.com’s political news blog, generated 1.9 million page views yesterday.

I really like your look back at May. AC360 did a great job, but I'm a bit surprised at LKL, I always thought he owned that hour.

Can I ask a question? Greta keeps saying she wins the 10pm hour. That looks like a lie, with what you have posted here. Is there something I don't understand about ratings?

@annon - as with most stats, you have to look at the fine print to determine what was the basis for the numbers. My comparison is based on the Adults 25-54 demographic which is one of the demographics that advertisers tend to use.

FOX tends to dominate in total viewers. For instance, for the week the week May 26 - May 30, 2008 Greta averaged 1,108,000 total viewers, AC360- 865,000 total viewers.

It's a valid claim that FOX has more viewers during the 10PM hour. But if you compare the two sets of numbers:
22% of Greta's viewers are in the key demographic,
while 32% of AC360's viewers are in the Adult 25 - 54 demographic. Advertisers marketing to the Adult 25 - 54 age group are going to get a bigger bang for their buck on CNN as compared to FOX.

For the month of May-
Greta averaged 1,098,810 total viewers (26% in the Adult 25 - 54 demo),
AC360 969,000 total viewers (33% in the Adult 25 - 54 demo).

@phebe- CNN's total viewers does tend to peak during the 9PM hour.

AC360 made a killing in the ratings this past week, HUGE demos and a big increase in total viewers. Greta picked the wrong week to boast about how her small staff beats AC360's big one.

Thank you Bookasylum for taking the time to explain the ratings to me. I always watch AC, but had seen the comments by Greta so I was really curious as to how this worked.
