I've Got Candy Crowley Envy

I've got a serious case of Candy Crowley envy. I adore everything about the CNN journalist and would love her to be in her shoes if it wasn't for the long hours and the travel and living out of a suitcase, etc! :) I came across a few items about CC in the last few days and wanted to share because I know I'm not alone in my CC admiration.

Candy spoke on March 17th his year at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. Here are a few excerpts from her talk.*

•"There are so many avenues where we put our journalism radio, TV, podcasts and blogs (that) what suffers is reporting. You almost don't have time to figure (a story) out before you're on the air with it. What we're actually missing is substance or context."

•Her day typically starts about 4:30 a.m. and ends at midnight, after the 11 p.m. report.

• Crowley said "I was so sleep deprived once that I found myself brushing my teeth with moisturizer. It's never-ending. But I can only last a while doing that. Eventually I hit a wall."

• On the topic of the current Presidential election, "We're not grown up as a nation about race. "We wish we were, but we're not."

•On the topic of her chosen profession, "One of the great things about journalism is that once you think that this is the biggest story you'll ever cover, something bigger happens".

• "Don't confuse journalism with your life. I've traveled to China with three presidents, But I also missed birthday parties and Halloweens. You're always asking the people you love to give up something. Balance" is the key word. Fortunately, I've got wonderful children who didn't grow up to be felons or anything."

I also came across this podcast interview that Crowley did in early September with Scott Hennen. Thanks to BA for the embed.

I'll leave you for today with a composite photo I did of CC. You must admit the lady can sure rock a necklace! ~Phebe

Great post, Phebe! Thanks for the podcast. Candy Crowley is someone who has helped me to understand a bit more the U.S. politics. I always pay attention to what she says. With David Gergen and John King, she is my "BPTOT".

I just wanted to say that Candy Crowley looks like she's been reborn since Barack won the Presidency. I thought she looked apprehensive and almost tearful[shimmering tears] for all the year I've been watching her reporting and I appreciate the reliefs she obviously feels about our collective future.
Thanks Candy for perservering.

Candy Crowley and David Gergen were my favorite journalists/pundits of the 2008 elections. They consistently offered intelligent, fair, insightful analysis, and they gave accurate predictions without over-speculating. My ears always pricked-up when they spoke.

I might also add that neither reporter has that anchorperson look. I'm pleased that CNN gave them both considerable face time (in particular, Candy Crowley, considering plus-sized women are generally shunned in mainstream media.)

I first Met Candy on a Golf Cart transporting her and I during a CNN Debate in SC. The second time was at the CNN/CBC Debate. Got my first photo with her and I there. I have satellite equipment at Iron Mill Interactive Media and always see her on a CNN down link. She is a busy and exciting woman. I like her take on politics as she provides true reporting with little or no spin on the events. She is a true Journalist.

Now about your Envy. Her hours are horrendous. Any of us who have been on the campaign trail know that 3-4 hours of sleep is a luxury. Sometimes up all night.

Thanks for the article about Candy. She is in a category of her own.

Well, this may come as a surprise, but I just heard Candy Crowley's obviously biased reporting regarding the correspondent's dinner in DC last night and I must say that her "insights" certainly don't reflect mine regarding Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh. They are legitimate sources of opinion even if this part of CNN chooses to discredit them. Why is conservative thought always ridiculed instead of debated? Maybe the truth is found in debate as Thomas Jefferson always insisted. What is Candy lacking? Objectivity. Let US make up our own minds. Believe me, we can see through the hype. Some of us are even as educated as journalists, although I'm sure Candy wouldn't believe that.
