“Beyond Trayvon: Race and Justice in America”

CNN’s Soledad O’Brien Hosts a Special Town Hall “Beyond Trayvon: Race and Justice in America”
Airs Friday, March 30th at 8p and 10p on CNN

CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien will moderate a Town Hall discussion on the event that has gripped the nation: the shooting of Trayvon Martin. In this one hour special we’ll hear from family members and friends, law enforcement officials, citizen watch organizers, civil right leaders, legal experts and concerned parents. The conversation will take place before an audience that will participate in the questioning. CNN will be live-blogging the show on the CNN In America blog. The live blog will also include comments from CNN commentators and reporters while they watch from Twitter, Facebook and more. Viewers can leave their comments as well.
Beyond Trayvon: Race & Justice In America airs on Friday, March 30th at 8p and 10p ET on CNN.
This special is a part of CNN’s In Depth coverage of Trayvon Martin and the various issues that have driven a national conversation. CNN Worldwide Executive Vice President and Managing Editor Mark Whitaker outlines CNN’s focused reporting for the next week and a half in a new Op-Ed: In Depth: CNN peels back the layers of the Trayvon Martin story.
In addition to the special Town Hall, reporting highlights include:
• In a special series titled Kids on Race: The Hidden Picture Anderson Cooper 360 will explore the topics of children and race beginning Monday at 8pm and 10pm ET. With the help of a CNN commissioned scientific pilot study, anchors Anderson Cooper and Soledad O’Brien will help viewers understand how race influences a child’s world.
• CNN.com will collect iReports in an Open Story providing perspective into how the Trayvon Martin case and the intersection of race, justice, family, law enforcement, media and the law affect people across the country.

I must say that Soledad O'Brien did an outstanding job in this CNN special. I just watched it. She is great at things like this and with documentaries. It's unfortunate though that her star doesn't really shine with her morning show, Starting Point. In the morning, I want to turn to CNN for news and not purposely done conflictual conversation. I admire her a lot otherwise.

I am seeing promotions for the April 3rd primaries and I think CNN chose wisely to incorporate the coverage into it's regularly scheduled primetime lineup, rather than having hours of non-stop America's Choice 2012 coverage like previous times. This way, other news headlines and stories can be incorporated as well.

CNN is going to regret this with Piers Morgan. Toure is a ral journalist and we all know that
Piers is a tabloid jerk. CNN is
losing the PR battle big time and
it will cost them more harm. It is
not the thing that CNN needs anymore. It is not smart for CNN
to keep hyping a disastrous publicity stunt. It emphasized what
we know Piers is an obnoxious jerk
and CNN will see the damage that
he has caused. You would think
idiot Piers knows that Toure is a
real jorunalist.

Wow, you seriously believe that Toure is a real journalist? I'm not taking Piers' side but Toure is obviously an opinionated racist jerk who thinks you are a moron for not agreeing with his views.

Both Toure and Piers are more about celebrity infotainment than real investigative journalism. They are two peas in a pod. I really like Toure, but I gotta say he does seem biased in his discussion of Trayvon case and perhaps it is just because it is an emotional issue to him. He was a little harsh towards Piers but Morgan deserved a lashing for so many other transgressions that I can't get worked up to defend him. Truth is, I think Piers loved every second of it because it was free publicity for his flagging show. Bad publicity is still publicity.

Just saw Friday's ratings - kudos to Soledad's Beyond Trayvon for a respectable showing on Friday. Even Anderson would be envious of those numbers. She beat Ed in the key demo which Anderson struggles to do. She took 2nd in the demo for both airings at 8 and 10. I didn't see the whole show, only about 30 minutes of it and I thought Soledad did a great job. Maybe CNN will see fit to try and promote their morning show to attract viewers - seems like a better investment then throwing money at their failing primetime shows.
