I have to say, Tom Foreman made OutFront watchable tonight.

CNN continues to be poorly managed. The network lives in a pre internet mindset. Just have left vs right, let people come on CNN and lie directly to viewers. Not aware that Google exists. Viewers don't like it when you literally lie to their face or assume they are too stupid to be aware of the facts. Google News, Yahoo News, access to legit news organizations are popular mechanisms to escape the noise that CNN accepts as news. Please invest in internet tools that permit you to skip what is real and what is not. MSNBC has surpassed CNN when it comes to smart informative journalism that talks to viewers rather than talking down to viewers. MSNBC went out and got the next generation by hiring Alex Witt, Ezra Klein, CHris Hayes, Melissa Harris Perry, Toure, Steve Kornacki. Journalists and thinkers. Meanwhile on CNN, pundits, pundits and more pundits. Heck tea party loyalists too. CNN put itself on a collision with viewers. We now live in a world where people share information, legit news not ideology but real news you can use. CNN has to make up it's mind. Is it news or nonsense ? Don't waste viewers time with silliness. Where is the put viewers first mentality ? CNN continues to lower it's news IQ and as a result will continue to lose viewers and relevance. The ineptness at CNN is mind-blowing. Why is Early Start /Starting Point still on the air ? Why not rename the 5-9 AM shows until the new shows are ready to air on CNN but then again it will be another anchor shuffle that never addresses the real problems at CNN. Inserting new anchors will do nothing to help CNN. As a result the new morning dhow will fail miserably.

Things continue to get interesting with CNN and Jeff Zucker. TVnewser says that Newsroom International will be renamed Around The World. I think CNN is slowly eliminating the "newsroom" brand. Also, the New York Post is reporting that Jeff Zucker had a meeting with Joy Behar. Very interesting.

Ezra Klein is definitely someone CNN should hire. jake Tapper has been filling in on 360 and I am just not feeling his anchoring.

CNN has a history of letting good young talent go. Remember this is the network who had TJ Holmes, Betty Nguyne and Nicole Lapin. It is more about format, content, story-telling and booking better guests. CNN has given the talking heads another show during the 10 AM hour. Of course, we know that CNN will always ask dumb questions like, who do you blame for the sequester ? CNN just continues to make the network unwatchable.

CNN should not be suing pundits when talking about sequestration. They are not experts and give us the same stale old talk. England has been going through austerity and they have been downgraded from AAA. Great Britain is in a triple dip recession. That means that all of the pundits coming on TV saying cut cut nothing but cuts. It does not work and there is ample evidence to show it is a failure. So many pundits have been on cable news praising David Cameron. I think I will be skipping CNN for the next couple of weeks. How in the world can anyone ignore what a failure austerity has been for Europe. Out economy is not the greatest but at least President Obama did not make things worse.

Jay Rosen and others are slamming Jeff Zucker
for replacing Soledad with Erin Burnett. Rosen
is being blunt, saying Burnett is unwatchable
and lacks believability. The new morning show
will Be DOA. CNN is getting negative press and
many are asking if the suits have ever really
looked at Outfront with the volume turned up.

Wow. Thank you for this blog, You guys who have been advocating a ladies news show in prime time are on to something. The Huffington Post has a fascinating article on the under-representation of women in the news. Women are 51 % of a racially and ethnically diverse America. Having a news show with a group of ethnically diverse female journalists would be gold for CNN. The article is calling this a crisis. This is a no brainer and is long overdue. Can't CNN be forward thinking for once. I think the names mentioned have been Betty Nguyen, Isha Sesay and NIcole LIpan with an Hispanic female news person.
It is 21st century America this needs to happen.

Unfortunately, CNN would never do such a show.
NY POST is reporting that Jeff Zucker recently brought in Joy Behar. Yikes. CNN is going from bad to worse.

Let's be honest. Staring Point is a bad show and needs to go like now. There are numerous factors that make it a bad show. My favorite anchoring team on CNN of all times was Tj Holmes & Betty Nguyen. I am not sure exactly who will be on the new morning show other than Chris Cuomo. The rest is TBD. Perhaps until the new morning show is ready to go CNN should bring in guests hosts like
TJ Holmes, Betty Nguyen and Jennifer Delgardo. Put these 3 on with Chris Cuomo now to test a show and see if they strike a chord with viewers and gain an audience. Get viewers at a comfort level by seeing Cuomo interact and hangout with others. Make it a freestyle format. The news of the day, interviews, guests and interesting topics. I worry that CNN is setting Chris Cuomo up for failure. Give the man a fair shot, he is a solid journalist and interviewer.
Going with 2 anchors looks too much like local news and ensemble is the best format for a 3 hour show.

Also, I would hope that Jeff Zucker will take a look at Aisha Tyler and George Stroumboulopoulos for a couple of new CNN shows. The Talk is gaining on the View. Strombo is the perfect late night show for CNN. Just return the show to 60 minutes and let Strombo do his thing. He would easily be CNN's Daily Show. Bring Vanguard to CNN by hiring Kaj Larsen, Adam Yamaguchi, Marianna Van Zeller and
Chrisof Putzel and even Amber Lyon. i say this so that CNN will have more original reporting. Bring Conor Knighton onboard too.

How about this :

Conor Knighton at 7 PM

360 at 8 PM

Aiha Tyler at 9 PM

Strombo at 10 PM

Vangaurd on CNN at 11 PM

CNN thought that by going with right wing media and taking on their version of news they would gain viewers. However, it's like Joe says, consumers of right wing media do not care for other news sources. By doing so CNN alienated viewers. It is going to be very had for CNN to get viewers back to the network. CNN never had success in the morning. Tj and Karin held their own against Morning Joe but for some unexplained reason CNN decided to go with Ali Velshi,
Carol Costello and Christine Romans. It was an epic failure and this continued with Starting Point.

Could it be the lack of diversity in the news industry is why the product is so bad ? Do networks executives push politics because that is what males in power care about most ? I hope that someone is bold enough to finally say : it's time for a women's news show that will air in prime time in cable news. It is hard for any business to survive by pretending that 51 % of the population does not exist in the cable news world.

There is a huge story involving one of the top female executives in America. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is telling her employees : work in the office not from home. Some are stunned that this is coming from a female CEO who is a fairly new mom. Is she trying to show she views male and female employees as equals ? Maybe she saw her mom balance career and family. Is she suppose to be directed by her maternal instincts and let that influence her business decisions or is she feeling the pressure to act like a man ? There are so many stories on a daily basis that relate to women so there would be no shortage of topics for conversation. How about temporarily showing the women's show in the morning ?

I have a feeling that female journalists would care more about the facts. Women read the fine print. It would look fresh because women are different. It seems like CNN has the most female journalists and they do appear to be form diverse backgrounds so it would be fairly easy for CNN to do this show. Personally, I am not a fan of The View, Talk is more fun and conversational. Each host is actually given to
opportunity to be heard and their personalities shine through and they enjoy doing the show.

It was also some big stories in the sports world for women from Danica Patrick, Rhonda Rousey, Brittney Griner and others. Women do follow sports and you can throw in the NFL and NBA as well. It is as if cable news is way behind modern times. It's hypocritical to do any stories on diversity when the White House is actually more diverse than cable news.

Jeff Zucker does deserve credit for hiring Rachel Nichols for a sports show but how about prime time and strong support to a women's news show.

I failed to mention one Oscar related story that is on the web. The Onion tweeted a crude sexual joke about 9 year old Oscar nominee Quenzhane Wallis. It is offensive to say the least. Sure the Onion is satire but we are talking about a 9 year old girl. Seth McFarlane said a joke that many thought crossed the line during the Oscars about the kid and George Clooney.

The Obama White House just might understand data or interactive journalism better than the so-called professionals. This morning the WH released data showing how all states will be affected yet at the same time the media morons are saying this won't hurt right away. Maybe if you are on Wall St rather than Main St. The WH has announced that President Obama will be visiting a shipyard in Virginia later this week. Apparently there are furlough notices on standby to be handed out if the Sequester happens. How about some crowdsourcing. Reach out to local media and regular people who can provide some truth or even going through all states individually using infographics, data and animation for visualization journalism. There are some federal and local programs that will be impacted right away. Someone needs to tell CNN this is not a game show in which viewers are subjected to a juvenile blame game and the dumbness of CNN.

Anonymous said...

That is a great point about the pundits on CNN. They won't be affected by the sequester. So it is just CNN being lazy. Try doing some actual reporting. It is time for CNN to dump the pundits and become an independent news organization. You won't get the biases and BS on CNN but the real story. I don't care if it is someone from the White House or some other politician, you are going to get a grilling from Jake Tapper, Wolf Blitzer, John King, Candy Crowley, Ali Velshi an others who are journalists who are on the CNN payroll. Isn't that their jobs. We don't need the pundits, we need the reporting that talks to viewers.
CNN needs to become the cable news channel with no pundits but real reporting. Try it and watch the ratings soar because CNN would be a real news alternative. Cable news is many ways is not for news junkies. There is so little news but tons of useless chatter that leaves viewers out of the picture. Just present it all to the viewers and show us the respect we deserve by giving CNN our time. Give us something to walk away with not roll our eyes at.

CNN's lack of diversity if coming back to haunt them. It is being reported the Jeff Zucker will be meeting with reps from NABJ to discuss the issue. If Piers Morgan and Erin Burnett can have shows on CNN in primetime, why cant TJ Holmes or an ethnically diverse group of female journalists be on CNN . There are rumors that TJ wants out of BET and is looking to get back into the news. That's why he pops up on MSNBC sometimes. CNN needs to watch out for the optics. So far Zucker has fired or demoted minorities while trying to save Erin Burnett, Not one media critic thinks this is smart.

Anonymous said...

@1:21PM: You make a very good point about diversity.
Even the reality shows now are showing diversity in their casting and if Zucker is unaware of the diversity situation and how things appear, no women of ethnicity and all white male anchors, except Sanjay Gupta, and Fareed Zakaria, than perhaps he should be called out.
However, he will probably justify his position by saying he is following viewer demograhics and if the viewers are mostly white, than he may be justified....not that I know this one way or the other. But those in the know, would.

CNN is becoming unglued and the desperation is showing. Jeff Zucker, Wolf Bilitzer , Carol Costello and the entire network is being ridiculed for ignorance. CNN took the right wing silliness about Michelle Obama and the Oscars. She was invited and so was FDR, Ronald Reagan and Laura Bush. CNN is the Titanic. The network is a lost cause. Who is CNN to tell Michelle Obama or the Academy what they should do. They can't
do anything to fix CNN. Shut up .

Anonymous said...

You would think that 1 of the 1st things Jeff Zucker would have actually done would be to actually watch all the CNN's programs. It would not take long for the man to realize that CNN is a hot mess and completely dysfunctional . It is easily visible that CNN is horrible when you try to watch the network. Does CNN really think viewers will watch the crap that it puts on TV. The tone on CNN is angry, bitter and miserable Nobody is going to watch that. There is already betting that the Jeff Zucker era at CNN is going to be short-lived. Ted has to be heartbroken about what is happening at CNN.

Anonymous said...

Why is Ken Jautz still at CNN ? He is responsible for CNN's ratings dive. Jautz completely destroyed HLN
by hiring Glenn Beck and Nancy Grace. He moved to CNN and ruined another network with pundits. The right wing media will never work for CNN. It's a niche audience and CNN is an international brand.

CNN is the missing something big about the sequester, local news. There are local media reports telling communities about the economic impacts. Yes CNN should be reaching out to the local media more for
their coverage rather than bringing in the left and right to argue. CNN needs to raise it's news IQ
For goodness sake CNNi it's 2013. Get out of the Crossfire mindset and move on to the 21st century.

There is one simple reason why you will not get any
fresh ideas from CNN. Executives go to another job
after being let go by some other network. No fresh
ideas there just the same old tired recycled formulas.
Unless CNN can get David Rhodes or Chris Licht ,
the same mistakes will be made over and over again.

Anonymous said...

CNN should reach out to TJ Holmes and get him to develop a prime time news show for CNN. Don't Sleep is not a bad show but is on hiatus at BET and unlikely to return. TJ could handle breaking news. and he could find ways to make the news informative and entertaining. The new show does not have to be geared towards a particular minority but at 18-49 yr olds. He could be the Strombo for CNN. GIve him the 10 PM hour and see what happens. TJ could have newsmakers, entertainers, authors filmmakers, the show would run the gambit.
Keep the studio audience and do the show live.
