Sanjay Gupta in Parade Magazine

From Parade.com ~

6 Things You Didn't Know About Dr. Sanjay Gupta

This weekend’s issue of Parade features CNN’s Sanjay Gupta on the cover. Here are six things he reveals that are not widely known about one of TV’s most popular doctors:

He once wanted to change his name to Steve: As a boy growing up in the small community of Novi, Michigan, he encountered prejudice and bullying. Wanting to fit in, he proposed changing his name, inspired by Steve Austin of TV’s The Six Million Dollar Man. His mother talked him out of it. “I told him to be proud of his name, that one day everyone would know it because of the wonderful things he was going to do,” she recalls.

He’s a Ford Motor Company loyalist: Gupta’s immigrant parents were engineers at Ford Motor Company, and he’s still loyal to the company. He drives a Ford Lincoln Navigator and a Jaguar bought when the British carmaker was owned by Ford.

He’s much more than a doctor: In addition to his medical responsibilities (apart from his work at CNN and at Grady, he’s an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Emory University, contributes pieces to CBS’s 60 Minutes and does videos and blog posts for Everyday Health.com) Dr. Gupta has published three books, including a novel, Monday Mornings, that briefly became a TV series last winter; competes in triathlons; writes poetry; is a devoted husband to wife Rebecca Olson Gupta; and an involved parent to their three daughters, ages 8, 6, and 4.

He still works as a neurosurgeon: His viewers may not know that when he’s home in Atlanta, Dr. Gupta operates on patients’ brains and spines at least one day a week at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is associate chief of neurosurgery. “You can have immediate healing through operations, and it’s gratifying,” he explains to Parade.

He loves music while he operates: Dr. Gupta’s OR playlists include hip-hop and the Red Hot Chili Peppers for opening and closing spinal surgeries, when something “a little raucous” is called for, and music that’s “more chill,” like Coldplay, during operations.

He doesn’t think the Affordable Care Act is a cure-all: Although Gupta applauds the Act as “an important step” he cautions that offering most Americans access to insurance is not enough. “If you don’t make America healthier, you’re not going to control costs,” he says. “And ultimately that’s what we have to do.”

For more on Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and suggestions on how you can take charge of your health before the end of the year, see Sunday’s Parade.

ABC'S BILL WEIR JOINS CNN

BILL WEIR JOINS CNN

CNN announced today that Bill Weir is joining the network as an anchor and Chief Innovation Correspondent. At a time when CNN is expanding the definition of news, the former anchor of ABC News’ Nightline will work with producers to develop original programming across the schedule.  He will join CNN in November, and be based in New York.

"Bill's range, sensibility and curiosity set him apart,” said CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker.  “He brings a unique storytelling style, perspective and sense of humor to CNN, and he will be a key player as we continue to expand our line-up.”

In addition to his anchoring and development roles, Weir will bring his forward-looking perspective to coverage of the innovation and technology space.  After filing groundbreaking reports from around the world on the likes of Apple, Microsoft and Facebook he will continue to document the pace of leading-edge innovation for CNN.

Said Weir, "I'm ecstatic to join a team with such vast resources and such strong commitment to covering our world. Nightline was a blast and while I'll always be indebted to my ABC friends this is a chance to mix journalism and creative storytelling in a whole new way. I can't wait."

While at ABC, Weir anchored and reported from the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina and the devastation of northern Japan in the hours after the tsunami. Thanks to his unique style of storytelling, his audience got refreshing insight on everything from the economic rise of China and India to the political battlegrounds of American elections, and his engaging investigative reports were a signature of ABC's "The Lookout” this summer.  Weir was also an original anchor of Good Morning America's weekend edition and contributed heavily to ABC digital video efforts.

Prior to his arrival at ABC News in 2007, Weir spent time writing and developing shows in Hollywood after years as an anchor and reporter in Los Angeles, Chicago and Green Bay.

WORLDWIDE VOTING FOR “CNN HERO OF THE YEAR” BEGINS TODAY ON CNNHEROES.COM AND ON MOBILE
CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute, Hosted By Anderson Cooper, Airs Sunday, December 1
Collaboration with the Annenberg Foundation will Continue to Provide Hands-On Support to the 2013 Top 10 Heroes
Here's Anderson Cooper on New Day announcing the nominees:

CNN, the worldwide leader in news, announced today the Top 10 Heroes of 2013, recognizing everyday people who are changing the world. The network also announced that online voting for the “CNN Hero of the Year” opened today, October 10 at 8am ET and will run through Sunday, November 17 at 11:59pm PT. Voters can log on to CNNHeroes.com to cast ballots for their favorite Top 10 Heroes once a day, every day. Votes can also be shared on Facebook and Twitter.

CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute will air on Sunday December 1 at 8:00pm ET, and will be simulcast on CNNI and CNN Espanol. Returning to New York City this year and hosted by Anderson Cooper from the American Museum of Natural History, CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute will honor individuals who are making extraordinary contributions to help improve the lives of others.  Since its inception, CNN Heroes has received over 50,000 submissions from more than 100 countries and profiled over 200 heroes.

“I've long admired the CNN Heroes tribute, but even more, the heroes themselves. We are proud to share the stories of these 10 exceptional individuals, and to continue one of CNN’s most important traditions,” said Jeff Zucker, President of CNN Worldwide.

This year, CNN continues its collaboration with the Annenberg Foundation, a leading supporter of nonprofits worldwide. As part of the prize package, the Annenberg Foundation will provide all of the 2013 Top 10 Heroes, and selected Heroes from previous years, free organizational training through a customized version of the Annenberg Alchemy program.  Alchemy offers practical guidance for nonprofit leaders in fundraising, communications, management of volunteers and strategies to build and keep a strong board of directors.

Each of the Top 10 CNN Heroes will receive a $50,000 grant, and one of the honorees, as voted by fans around the globe, will be named the CNN Hero of the Year, receiving an additional $250,000 grant to further aid their cause. Voting for the 2013 honorees can be done at www.CNNHeroes.com. Voters will also be able to view the honorees’ profiles on the site.

The 2013 honorees are:
·         Dale Beatty (Statesville, NC) After Dale Beatty lost his legs in the Iraq War, his community thanked him for his service by helping him build a home. To pay it forward, Beatty co-founded Purple Heart Homes. Since 2008, the nonprofit has modified or helped provide homes for dozens of disabled veterans.
·         Georges Bwelle (Yaoundé, Cameroon) For decades, Georges Bwelle watched his father suffer, unable to get the medical attention he needed. Now a doctor himself, Bwelle travels into the jungles of his native Cameroon nearly every weekend, providing free surgery for those who don't have access to health care.
·         Robin Emmons (Charlotte, NC) More than 72,000 people in Charlotte, North Carolina lack access to fresh produce. When Robin Emmons discovered this problem, she turned her backyard into a garden. Since 2008, she has grown more than 26,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables for area residents.
·         Danielle Gletow (Trenton, NJ) Danielle Gletow started One Simple Wish, a nonprofit that helps grant the wishes of foster children. Wishes are posted online, and anyone can pay to make a child's wish come true. Since 2008, the group has helped grant more than 6,500 wishes to children in 42 states.
·         Tawanda Jones (Camden, NJ) Tawanda Jones is using dance to empower the youth of Camden, New Jersey, one of the poorest cities in the country. Through Jones' drill team program, more than 4,000 children have learned discipline, respect and community service -- and all of them have graduated high school.
·         Richard Nares (San Diego, CA) Richard Nares lost his son to leukemia in 2000. Today, his nonprofit, the Emilio Nares Foundation, provides transportation and support for low-income children battling cancer in San Diego. The group gives more than 2,500 free rides each year.
·         Kakenya Ntaiya (Enoosaen, Kenya) Kakenya Ntaiya is inspiring change in her native Kenyan village. After becoming the first woman in the village to attend college in the United States, she returned to open the village's first primary school for girls. Today, Ntaiya helps provide an education -- and much more -- to 155 girls.
·         Chad Pregracke (East Moline, IL) Chad Pregracke has made it his life's work to clean up the Mississippi River and other American waterways. Since 1998, about 70,000 volunteers have helped Pregracke and his nonprofit remove more than seven million pounds of garbage from 22 rivers across the country.
·         Estella Pyfrom (West Palm Beach, FL) Estella Pyfrom used her life savings to create "Estella's Brilliant Bus," a mobile computer lab that provides digital access and tutoring for low-income children and adults in Palm Beach County. Since 2011, thousands of students have benefited from her bus.
·         Laura Stachel (Berkeley, CA) Dr. Laura Stachel co-founded We Care Solar to provide a simple, reliable light and power source to health-care facilities in developing countries. Since 2009, more than 250 "solar suitcases" have been helping to save mothers' and babies' lives in more than 20 countries.

CNN’s Kelly Flynn is the creator and senior executive producer of the CNN Heroes initiative and CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute. Said Flynn, “I am thrilled that we are returning this year to our original home in New York and that, after seven years, we continue to bring attention to these amazing people and their very important work.  All of us at CNN are humbled and heartened by the difference these Heroes are making.”

UNGUARDED WITH RACHEL NICHOLS 10/25/13

UNGUARDED WITH RACHEL NICHOLS KICKS OFF OCTOBER 25 ON CNN

CNN announced today that veteran sports journalist Rachel Nichols will host Unguarded with Rachel Nichols, a weekly half-hour show that takes an unfiltered look at the most interesting stories and personalities in sports.  Kicking off Friday, October 25, 10:30 p.m. ET/PT, Nichols takes viewers beyond the field for candid conversations with some of the world's most extraordinary athletes.

"CNN has not had a dedicated sports show in more than a decade, and to have the talents of a viewer favorite with Rachel, a revered player in the space, is another key step in CNN's evolution toward a range of compelling storytelling," said Jeff Zucker, President, CNN Worldwide.

"This is a terrific opportunity to create a show that takes a different look at the sports we love and the human side of the people who play them," Nichols said. "And by doing that at CNN, we can incorporate the network's incredibly broad and diverse perspective, which is a game-changer."

Nichols brings her noted smarts, wit and insightful interview skills to the weekly show, which focuses on sports in a news and pop culture environment with a mix of interviews and panel discussions designed to appeal to both sports fans and CNN's general interest audience.

In addition, CNN International (CNNI) will simulcast Unguarded with Rachel Nichols on Fridays at 10:30 p.m. ET.  CNNI is available in more than 270 million households around the world.

Nichols continues to serve as a reporter for Turner Sports' broadcasts of the NBA, Major League Baseball and the NCAA Tournament.

Mercedes-Benz USA and United Airlines are the launch sponsors for Unguarded with Rachel Nichols.  In addition to customized on-air billboards, both sponsors will receive commercial adjacencies around the show.

Unguarded with Rachel Nichols is overseen by Kirby Bradley.  Bradley joins CNN from HBO, where he produced many award-winning documentaries and series, most notably Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
