This past weekend, you could find several of the CNN anchors and journalists on hand for the NBA All Star weekend in New Orleans. Below are a few excerpts from an article that ran in this morning's The Times Picayune. Dave Walker spoke with both Wolf Blitzer and John King while they were in town. You can read the full article here.

The dudes from Barenaked Ladies, it turned out, are devoted "Sit Room" loyalists.

After meeting Blitzer at a pre-concert reception Saturday, they later led the House of Blues crowd in a call-and-response name-check of Blitzer, a CNN stalwart since 1990.

"They saw I was there, and they had a little fun with 'Wolf Blitzer,'" said Wolf Blitzer, after wrapping Sunday's live two-hour "Late Edition." "They're all from Toronto, and I'm from Buffalo (N.Y.), and we talked a little bit about that.

"They're huge fans of 'The Situation Room.' They watch it all the time. Who knew?

Also in town for the All-Star festivities on Time-Warner's dime was John King, CNN's chief national correspondent and master manipulator of the Multi-Touch Collaboration Wall.

If you don't know what that is, you're not among the huge numbers Blitzer said are plugging into CNN's political coverage.

The wall, developed by a New York company named Perceptive Pixel, is the breakout media star of the campaign so far.

It's basically a giant iPhone screen -- touch-sensitive and fronting enough computing power to allow King -- or whoever's poking it at an individual moment -- to zoom, squeeze and whoosh through maps and graphics.

It's "Minority Report" meets a pollster's fever dream, and King, a political correspondent for The Associated Press before joining CNN in 1997, is its first maestro.

"My son jokes with me... that he actually likes what I do now," King said. "But I'm a little worried about it, because the cab driver who brought me here today said, 'I love that map board.' It's obviously connecting with people in a way beyond what I would've thought.

"It scares me a little bit because I don't want it to become a gimmick. There are a lot of things in television that are for show and not for tell. I think this is great show and tell. You can use the technology to bring some of the nuts-and-bolts of it closer to people."

Another Democratic Debate

Super Tuesday photo courtesy of E.M. Pio-Roda for CNN (R) 2008

Hello everyone! How awesome was the last CNN Democratic Debate between Senators Clinton and Obama? Don't you wish you could watch another one just like it? Well, your wishes came true today! Here are the details:

CNN, Univision Communications Inc. and the Texas Democratic Party in conjunction with the Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation will host a Democratic presidential primary debate on Thursday, Feb. 21. Both Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama have accepted invitations to the debate. The program will air live from the LBJ Auditorium at the University of Texas in Austin on CNN and on CNN International from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (ET)/7p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (CT) and will air in Spanish on the Univision Network beginning at 11:30 p.m. (ET)/10:30 p.m. (CT). It will also stream live on CNN.com and will later be available on demand on both on Univision.com and CNN.com. It will also re-air on CNN and CNN en Espanol.

The debate will include questions from both CNN and Univision journalists and will be moderated by a CNN anchor.

This debate is part of both CNN's and Univision's extensive and innovative coverage of the 2008 presidential campaign. This follows two historic, first-ever televised presidential forums focused on the issues central to Hispanic voters and broadcast in Spanish on Univision, reaching millions of viewers across the country. It is the ninth presidential primary debate sponsored by CNN this cycle. CNN's debates in 2007 and 2008 have been among the most-watched in cable news history.

Texas, as the second most populous state in the nation, is ideally suited as the location for a CNN/Univision partnering. According to the Pew Hispanic Center, nearly 25 percent of Texas' eligible voters, who will go to the polls on Tuesday, March 4, are Hispanic.

I don't mind saying that I am enjoying the CNN Democratic debates. Not only do we get to see where these two candidates differ on the issues but we get to see who really knows their stuff. For me, it's not only important to ignite a crowd and get people involved in the democratic process but at this point, the nominee should to have the facts and details to back up their promises. This is such an exciting time in our nation's political history. I'm just so glad to be a part of it. One thing's for sure, no matter who wins the Democratic nomination, history will be made!

CNN Honors the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation

CNN announced today in a press release that it's inaugural CNN Heroes Award will be presented to The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for its tireless work in the field of spinal cord injuries. Click here for full text

CNN Honors Reeve Foundation with First CNN Heroes’ Hero Award

Network Offers Cross-Platform Programming for Special Night of ‘CNN Heroes’ Tributes on Thursday, Dec. 6

CNN honors the legacy of Christopher and Dana Reeve and their foundation dedicated to paralysis sufferers with the inaugural CNN Heroes’ Hero Award. This award – to be presented at the first annual “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute” on Thursday, Dec. 6 – was created to recognize individuals who devoted their lives to helping others and whose names have become synonymous with their causes.

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy. The couple formed the foundation after Christopher Reeve’s tragic horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

“When Christopher Reeve moved his fingers five years after he was told they would never move again, he was really pointing the way for all of us to follow,” said Peter D. Kiernan, the foundation’s chairman. “The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation accepts the wonderful Heroes’ Hero honor from CNN with great thanks and an ironclad commitment to follow the path that Chris and Dana identified.”

Reeve died in 2004, and Dana Reeve died two years later following complications from lung cancer.

“CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute” is the culmination of a five-month audience nomination process through which ordinary people will be recognized for accomplishing extraordinary deeds. Hosted by CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Christiane Amanpour at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute” will air live globally on CNN/U.S., CNN International and CNN en Espaรฑol on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 9 p.m. (ET).

From May 1 through September, CNN Worldwide has featured everyday heroes across its television networks, digital services and at
www.CNN.com/Heroes, encouraging viewers to submit and nominate local heroes they deem deserving of recognition as a CNN Hero. For the Dec. 6 gala, honorees will be named in the following categories: “Defending the Planet,” “Fighting for Justice,” “Community Crusader,” “Medical Marvel,” “Championing Children” and “Young Wonder.”

In its first year of the CNN Heroes initiative, CNN received more than 7,000 nominations from viewers in 80 countries, nominating people from more than 90 countries.

Leading up to the global telecast, Headline News will present a special edition of Showbiz Tonight, live from the museum, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. (ET). Hosted by anchors A.J. Hammer and Brooke Anderson, Showbiz Tonight will feature profiles of CNN heroes, compelling stories of celebrities who have taken up the cause of real-life heroes around the work and live interviews with stars arriving for the tribute, including a special appearance by Masi Oka of the hit NBC show Heroes.

Online, correspondent Alina Cho will provide live coverage for CNN.com as well as provide interviews and videos.

Following the telecast, Cooper will remain on the air to anchor Anderson Cooper 360° live from the museum until midnight. (ET)

Honorees will be announced at the Dec. 6 gala at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, which will include performances from Grammy Award winners Mary J. Blige and Sheryl Crow and a duet by Grammy Award winner Norah Jones and acclaimed performer-producer Wyclef Jean. Presenters will include Tyra Banks, Glenn Close, Harry Connick, Jr., Rosario Dawson, LL Cool J, Kyra Sedgwick and Jimmy Smits.

Joel Gallen, who has helmed ambitious telethon events supporting victims of both the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina, serves as executive producer for the event. Gallen won a Peabody Award for “America: A Tribute to Heroes” and has been nominated for several Emmys throughout his career. Kelly Flynn is senior executive producer for the CNN Heroes initiative.

Help The Hungry

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently ran a story about Betty Nguyen and the work that she has done through Help The Hungry, a charity that she and her family establish. Below are a few excerpts from the article:

Betty Nguyen, CNN anchor, searched the faces she saw during her first return to the land of her birth, Vietnam.

It was 1998. She had not been back since 1975, when her parents fled the Communist takeover with her in their arms.

The tough realities of her native soil moved from story to reality.

"It's different when you see it with your own eyes," she said.

"I would look at the faces, would look at the people about my age, and I would think, 'Wow, that could be me.' Except for the grace of God that I was able to come to this country," Betty Nguyen said.

From those sights, those thoughts, a plan of action grew.

When they returned home to the United States — she was living in Texas at the time where she worked on local TV — she and Kim started their own nonprofit organization, Help the Hungry

They got donations of goods and money from family, friends and contacts.

But Betty takes the donations each year and travels back to buy five or six tons of food, medicines and clothes on the local market, which is cheaper than buying here and shipping it over.

Then, with the help of the International Red Cross, she travels, usually to areas flooded during the monsoon, and gives the supplies to those in need.

It is a yearly trip born of a sense of thankfulness.

"I got a good look at how poor and how destitute they are, and how truly blessed I really am. And because I am blessed, I have to take responsibility for that," Nguyen said.
