In The Money

Today, I wanted to take a look at one of the shows that airs over the weekend. CNN's original programming isn't just Monday through Friday. This week's show: In the Money, which is host by Christine Romans and Ali Velshi. CNN's website describes the show as: There's a lot of money out there. How can you land your stake? "In The Money" breaks down the business news of the week and shows you how it impacts your bottom line.

This week's show covered a variety of business related topics including:

• With speculation that New York City's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, will run for president as an independent candidate, it raises the question, would a CEO be better than a career politician?
• A discussion with Richard Florida from George Mason University & Creative Class Group (founder). Florida argues that the more gay friendly a city is, the more prosperity a city will enjoy. The theory is that open minded kids will move to communities that are more open minded and open to diversity. Successful businesses will move to or start up in these same areas.
• In the What Works segment: Miles O'Brien reports on the carbon footprints of common companies. To view the report cards on the various companies examined, you can go to the Climate Counts website.
• In View from the Top: Velshi interviews Glen Senk, CEO of Urban Outfitters.
• A review of the new iPhone and a demonstration of a new service available for G3 phones, video share.
• In Life After Work: A look at a retired FBI agent who writes fiction and teaches poker players how to read other player's tells.

Saying that this is just a business show doesn't do it justice. As you can see from the variety of topics, its not just about what happened on Wall Street. The show makes a link between the latest news and how that might impact you financially.

In the Money airs 1 p.m. ET Saturday and 3 p.m. ET Sunday.

Campbell Brown Update

No, there is still no confirmation on whether or not Campbell Brown will be joining CNN when her contract with NBC expires. But, she did make another type of big announcement this morning on the Today Show. Brown and her husband Dan Senor are expecting a baby. Congratulations!

Another Look at the New Hampshire Primary Debates

The Debates
Did you get to see both CNN Presidential Primary debates held on June 3rd and June 5th from New Hampshire? If not, don’t fret, there are plenty of ways that you can still see the debates. CNN has provided both debates online for you to view. You can also find the debates on Saint Anselm College’s website and on BlipTV.


The Set at Sullivan Arena
CNN transformed Saint Anselm College’s Sullivan Arena, typically used for ice hockey, into a set fit for a future president. A small bit of irony in all this, is that the place where teams body check each other into boards, will now host an event in which candidates are sure to body check their opponents. blogged Brian Lawson.

Crews worked around the clocked to make sure that the set was ready; an effort that involved the college’s staff, students, and the CNN staff. WMUR has posted two slide shows (setting up and preparing) showing the transformation.

On the Thursday before the debate, Laura Rossi blogged: As I stood watching all the action, there were three rounds of lights raised to the ceiling, a podium set up, and the 40-foot backdrop frame completely assembled in front of my eyes. Several large red and white vinyl cubes sat like gigantic blocks waiting to be added to the skeleton-like frame. She also posted a podcast of an interview conducted with CNN’s Vice President of Weekend Public Affairs programs, Lucy Spiegel, about the stage and her role in the debate planning process.

In another podcast that same morning, Doug Minor, talks with CNN’s lighting designer, Mike Poley (from the DC Bureau) about the setup of the area for the debate.

A Student’s Perspective
An excerpt from a blog post on Saint Anselm College’s website:
Some 51 Saint Anselm College students have been working closely with CNN on debate preparations since late last week. These students and their 10-hour plus work days have played a critical role in making the debates a reality. Students have worked with CNN's news anchors, correspondents, set designers, marketing and public relation staff, and others running errands, standing in for set checks (lighting, sound, video), moving sets, and many other important roles.

In the meantime, they've got to know many of CNN's on-air talent and executives and received an insiders view of all the work that goes into staging a major event like CNN's Presidential Primary Debates.

Cory True '09, a junior politics major from Augusta, Maine (and guest student blogger), had the opportunity to interview two students about their experiences working the debates. The interviews have been posted in a podcast.

Stephanie Zanotti, a student, also blogged about her experience as a “Runner”, posting: At a CNN reception following Tuesday night’s debate I was fortunate enough to chat with Wolf Blitzer. Our conversation was the perfect way to end one of the most exciting events of my life. I described to him the immense appreciation I now have for what goes on behind a major media event, TV shows, and even commercials, Wolf replied “I hope it doesn’t spoil the magic for you.” When I responded “No, it greatly enhanced it” he answered, “Then we’ve done our job haven’t we?”

I admire the way that Saint Anselm College handled the pressures of hosting a news event that would be seen around the world. The college, community, students, and CNN staff have provided those of us who were sitting at home an insight to the sights and sounds surrounding an important step in the election process. More than just documenting an event, they’ve provided the world with a behind the scenes view of a little piece of American history.

CNN Express

In past elections, the CNN Express bus has made many appearances at political events on the way to election day. Its frequently manned with various CNN journalists to travel around the country. Well, this year, CNN has a brand new CNN Express bus and were providing tours of it while it was stationed at the New Hampshire debates.





It looks so nice and new now, but I want to see the pictures of the inside of the bus 502 days from now (the day after the 2008 Presidential election).

Keeping Them Honest

For the past week on AC360, Drew Griffin has been reporting on Congress and their earmarks. CNN interns called everyone in Congress and asked for a list of their earmarks. Earmarks in bills could potentially be worth billions of dollars from tax payers. Up til now, Congress hasn't wanted much to do with sharing their list with the press or the people they represent. It makes you wonder what they are hiding? Here's a break down of how many have responded and who haven't, according to Drew Griffin's report.

*45 have turned over their requests.
*68 flat out refused.
*6 told us they did not request any earmarks.
*316 didn't respond at all

Check out his post on the 360 blog and read more about the story. You can also check to see if your Congressman/woman has given their list. If not, maybe a call or email would nudge them along!

World Refugee Day…and Some Good News Too!!!!

Today is World Refugee Day and CNN has been covering the story from all the angles.

First a little history on World Refugee Day. According to Wikipedia World Refugee Day, held on June 20, celebrates the lives and contributions of refugees everywhere. Established in 2000 by the United Nations General Assembly, World Refugee Day was first celebrated in 2001. The date of June 20 was chosen to coincide with Africa Refugee Day. Each year, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) selects a theme and coordinates events across the globe. This year’s official globe theme 'Help them learn. Help them play'.

Today it is estimated there is a total 20.8 million refugees as well as the numerous Internally Displaced Persons with a surge of 14%. Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) are forced to leave their homes because of persecution, but unlike refugees, they often seek sanctuary in more secure parts of their own countries. They, too, are vulnerable to extreme poverty and brutal suppression, but because they have not crossed an international frontier, they are often beyond the reach of international humanitarian assistance. CNN’s coverage started today on American Morning with several reporters in different locations reporting on the situation around the world. Sanjay Gupta in Washington D.C discussing the Sudan/Darfur refugees. Christiane Amanpour in Jordan. Hala Gorani in Iraq and Kiran Chetry in Washington D.C. talking with First Lady Laura Bush in regards to refugees in Burma and Africa

Christian Amanpour had a special which aired today at noon called World Refugee Day: Passage to Hope. (I unfortunately did not find this out until 5PM this afternoon, hopefully they will re-air the special at some point in time)

Wolf Blitzer had UNICEF Ambassador Lucy Liu on The Situation Room. Some startling facts were brought up during the interview.

Paula Zahn Now did stories on Refugee Sex Slaves in Afghanistan, Culture Shock for Iraqis in Sweden and an Iraqi woman who is facing deportation from the Unites States. The lingering problems refugees still face (disease, etc.)

And of course on Anderson Cooper 360, Anderson had his one-on-one interview with actress and Goodwill Ambassador of the UN Refugee Agency, Angelina Jolie. Anderson also blogged about tonight’s show.

According to Inside Cable News, Prime News with Erica Hill will be expanding to two hours starting Monday June 25th. It will run from 5-7 pm ET. CNN Events, Appointments, and Arrivals

CNN, YouTube Team Up to Host First-Ever Voter-Generated Presidential Debates

Webwire and YouTube reported that CNN and YouTube plan to bring two presidential debates to the American public in a live forum, featuring video questions submitted to YouTube to be broadcast and answered by the candidates on CNN. CNN’s Anderson Cooper will moderate the two-hour debates and pose follow-up questions. CNN had previously announced the arrangement between the two companies for the upcoming debates.

The Democratic debate, the first Democratic National Committee sanctioned presidential forum of the 2008 election cycle will be held at the military school, the Citadel, in Charleston, South Carolina from 7:00 to 9:00 PM (ET) on July 23rd live on CNN. The Republican forum hosted by CNN and YouTube will be held on September 17th in Florida from 7:00 to 9:00 PM (PT).

YouTube will began accepting videos June 15th at www.youtube.com/debates.

Jim Walton, CNN Worldwide president, was quoted as saying that “These debates take the bold step of embracing the ever-increasing role of the internet in politics. The inclusion of the massive online community enables these debates to engage more viewers and potential voters than ever before”.

YouTube will feature special debate coverage on its “You Choose ’08” platform and its Citizentube political channel before and after the debates. Immediately after the debates, user questions and candidate answers will be featured prominently on YouTube where people can interact with the content through YouTube’s community features, extending the life of the debates.

In addition to the live airing on CNN, the debates will appear on CNN’s multiple platforms. The events will be simulcast on CNN.com, CNN International, CNN en Español, CNN Radio and CNN Airport Network. CNN.com’s Election Center, available at www.CNN.com/ELECTION, also will provide extensive coverage and analysis of the debates, including behind-the-scenes reports, podcasts and on-demand video, including the entire debates in streaming and downloadable formats. The broadcast of the debates also will be made available to all CNN Radio affiliates worldwide, with special coverage available on Headline News and to CNN Newsource affiliates.

Guidelines for all videos include:

• Be original -- choose your own approach
• Be personal -- your perspective is important.
• Choose your focus -- you can address one or all of the candidates
• Keep it quick -- your question should be less than 30 seconds
• Make it look good -- speak loudly and keep that camera steady.
• Provide context -- in your question or video description, include your name & home town.
• Please note -- all videos are subject to the YouTube Terms of Use. .
• Anderson Cooper had a few bits of advice for questioners, including one that some might not follow. "Keep it clean," he said.

Perhaps 20 or 30 questions are likely to be used during the two-hour debates. A few YouTubers will get invitations to join the live audience. Some purists might wish YouTubers could vote on which questions to pose. CNN, however, will retain that job, choosing the most creative and compelling videos. All submissions, however, will be available on YouTube, before or after the debates.

CNN to Guide Viewers to Charities

CNN plans to go beyond reporting the news by directing its viewers to charity and relief efforts involved in some of their stories.

Hurricane Katrina and the Asian tsunami proved to CNN that viewers want to respond to the news, Jim Walton, CNN Worldwide president, said Tuesday. The "Impact Your World" initiative begins on Wednesday to coincide with World Refugee Day.

CNN is setting up a special Web site with contact information for charities in categories like refugees and homelessness, poverty, natural disasters and homelessness. Viewers will be told about this site when CNN does relevant stories.

"It just seemed to make a lot of sense," Walton said. "We've been aggressively working in these areas."

CNN is working with the Web site Charitynavigator.com, which rates charities for effectiveness, to make sure that it is sending viewers to effective organizations and is not playing favorites.

"We want to be as agnostic as possible," Walton said.

He said the project was the brainstorm of Tonja Brown, a CNN employee who worked in marketing.

CNN's Washington bureau "welcomed three baby girls into the world last week, all within a 24-hour period," The Examiner reports.

Details from The Examiner state ""Late Thursday night, CNN congressional unit producer Deirdre Walsh and her husband, Mike O’Connor, welcomed Madeleine Grace O’Connor, who weighed in at 7 pounds, 9 ounces. Then on Friday, CNN senior video producer Chuck Hurley and his wife, Amy, welcomed Ava Jane Hurley, who weighed in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces. Finally, CNN technical production manager Steve Dolce and his wife, Heather, welcomed Isabella Hope Dolce, who weighed in at 8 pounds, 3 ounces..."

The breaking news model that CNN built its empire on now appears to be more suited for its website rather than its cable television station. Time Warner CEO, Richard Parsons, was recently quoted as saying “I worry about CNN more than I do about CNN.com”. Mr. Parsons, who was discussing the company’s entire portfolio at a London media conference last week, bordered on pessimism about the state of CNN Cable News.

CNN's ratings have been on a steady decline since 2003, when it regularly got 689,000 households to tune in each day, to a low of 383,000 last year, according to Nielsen Media Research. For the first six months of this year, it's up to 431,000. However, Fox News, its younger, conservative rival, routinely pounds it in the ratings, often garnering twice the household ratings and recently beating CNN in prime time on the coverage of the presidential debates.

Over on the website, though, new visitors are up nearly 25% to 26 million in April compared with the same period last year. That, coupled with the 90 million worldwide subscribers to CNN Mobile, suggests that CNN's breaking-news model fits in better online than it does on the television set in America's living rooms.

Those ratings figures are paralleled by ad income. While revenue has grown for CNN.com to $71.4 million since 2003, TV revenue has dropped 11 percent to $378.5 million in the same period

TV news has historically had a harder time attracting an audience than entertainment programming. CNN ranks third among Time Warner's cable properties behind TNT and TBS, which regularly reel in 3 million to 4 million viewers in prime time. CNN occasionally gets about half that for special-event coverage.

CNN’s prime competitor, Fox News, built its audience by not relying solely on news, but packing its shows with opinions and hosts who are not shy or quiet-spoken about expressing their views. This approach makes for what some view a more entertaining experience. Fox News has become quite capable at adopting a strong point of view, similar to what talk radio has done for years. This has led viewers to treat the cable channel more like radio, a companion throughout the day.

CNN, on the other hand, has its roots firmly entrenched in a more traditional approach to journalism, and has built its reputation on its ability to deliver breaking news 24 hours a day. The web has diluted that core mission, and CNN has since struggled to redefine itself and its mission in a way that doesn't feel like just the liberal version of Fox News.

"You're right, Fox has higher ratings than CNN U.S., but ... CNN U.S. has more individuals watching, every quarter, every year," said Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide. "We don't have as high ratings because the CNN viewer doesn't spend as much time watching." With the advent of podcasts, news over cell phones and blackberries, as well as other media platforms, CNN is determined according to Walton "….. to be able to serve our news anywhere in the world at any time on any platform." Wherever you get your news, Walton wants it to be on a CNN platform.

Alerting Beatles Fans - A Must See Larry King!!

Calling all Beatles fans: You will not want to miss the June 26th edition of "Larry King Live."

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison will be the guests in a live telecast from the Beatles Revolution Lounge at The Mirage in Las Vegas. Dr. Sanjay Gupta added to Board of Directors of the Lance Armstrong Foundation

The Lance Armstrong Foundation has added CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta to its board of directors.

"Dr. Gupta is an influential health expert and a passionate advocate for health promotion, prevention and well-being," says Doug Ulman, president of the LAF, in a prepared statement.

"Because Gupta has devoted his career to inspiring and empowering Americans to prevent and overcome disease, he is a perfect addition to the LAF team. We are honored to benefit from his energy and expertise and his commitment to fight cancer," adds Ulman.

Since 2001, Gupta has served as CNN's chief medical correspondent, providing expert commentary and on-the-scene reporting. He is also a staff and faculty member at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta and a board-certified neurosurgeon.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation, founded by champion cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong, focuses on preventing cancer and improving the lives of people affected by the disease.

CNN Visits 402nd AFSB in Iraq

LSA ANACONDA, BALAD, Iraq—Led by national correspondent John King, a CNN team recently focused its lens on the 402nd Army Field Support Brigade—Iraq. During its March 18-20 visit, the news crew was filming an hour-long feature on Army readiness, equipping and the reset process. According to producer Laura Bernardini, CNN’s goal was to gain an understanding of Army readiness by seeing forward repair activities performing field level maintenance and meeting the personnel who do the mission in Kuwait and Iraq. The team toured the Baghdad Retrograde Operations Site and the HMMWV Enhancement Facility where they interviewed David Stewart, the FRAG 5 Armor Installation Site Lead. After Baghdad, CNN visited Balad where they toured the Route Clearance, HMMWV and Armor Security Vehicle Maintenance Facilities.


They also toured the Stryker forward repair activity at which King was given a ride in a Stryker vehicle. They also viewed the Tanker Ballistic Protective System and the Common Remotely Operated Weapons Station. During a visit to the Theater Aviation Sustainment Manager site, they witnessed repairs to rotor blades. They rounded out their maintenance facility tour by seeing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles shop. They finished up by interviewing Col. Rob Sorensen, 402nd Army Field Support Brigade – Iraq Commander. Following their visit with the 402d, the team embedded with the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) and went out on a convoy mission outside the base. While with the 13th SC (E), they also did a feature story on the life of an American Soldier, following a Soldier around for the day to witness living and working conditions.

The visit was a great way to demonstrate the brigade’s ability to synchronize Army Materiel Command battlefield repair capabilities while highlighting the brigade’s commitment to Warfighter support. Plans call for the story to air in six to eight weeks.

Christiane Amanpour Receives Award From Queen Elizabeth II

The following is an excerpt from a CNN press release posted on Whats Happening At CNN:

For her services to journalism, Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s chief international correspondent, today was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II.

The award was announced on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II official birthday, and Amanpour was one of a select number of public and private British citizens to be honored with this prestigious award.

Established in June 1917 by King George V, the CBE is one of five medals that make up the “The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire,” which recognizes outstanding contributions in the service of the country and the honoree’s profession. Amanpour is among a small number of journalists to have been awarded a CBE.

Amanpour was interviewed by CNN's John Roberts on American Morning earlier today:

ROBERTS: Well, you've certainly let nothing stand in your way as you have toured around the world to all of these hot spots, trying to shine the bright light of truth on some very dark places. You know, "TIME" magazine once called you the most influential foreign correspondent since Edward R. Murrow. I mean, that's a pretty great thing to have said about you.

AMANPOUR: You know, it's really nice, but I really strongly feel -- and I feel more and more -- that our job is simply to stick to the basics of what this profession is about. It's about reporting without fear nor favor. It's about recognizing the serious in this world and going out and telling the stories, giving a voice to those who don't have a voice, and just simply trying to tell the truth, because our viewers really want it, they really deserve it. And, you know, whether it's against dictators, or whether it's in elected governments, we must always remember that our job is not to be part of the propaganda campaign, but to report without fear nor favor, because if we don't, we can get really into a big disaster. And I, as you know, feel very strongly that that's what happened in the lead-up to the Iraq war.
