CNN’s Max Foster sat down for the first interview with Prince William since he and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their first child.  The interview is part of a one-hour special, Prince William’s Passion:  New Father, New Hope, which will premiere on CNN  on Sunday, September 15^that 10 pm ET.   The special chronicles the Prince’s passion for Africa and his dream to save the world’s most endangered species.  As a new father, the Prince discusses his hope that one day his son can experience the same Africa that he and Prince Harry did as young boys.

A portion of the interview will air on CNN’s New Day on Monday, August 19^th at 8:00 AM ET.  In it the Prince reflects on becoming a new parent and how it has forever changed him. 

The Royal Family has worked on conservation in Africa for generations.  In Prince William’s Passion:  New Father, New Hope, the Prince discusses how he is continuing the tradition.  His love of Africa and its endangered species were instilled in him by his father Prince Charles, and late mother Princess Diana.  The Duke of Cambridge also highlights some of the incredible work done by individuals in the area of conservation including Tusk, an organization that he is a patrons of.

We Were There: The March on Washington – An Oral History Debuts

As the nation prepares to reflect upon the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, CNN will premiere a new documentary that captures the first-hand accounts of people who witnessed the momentous event.  We Were There: The March on Washington – An Oral History will be hosted by CNN’s Don Lemon and will debut on Friday, August 23 at 10:00p.m., 1:00a.m., and 4:00a.m. on CNN/U.S.  All times Eastern. 

Of the leaders of the “Big Six” civil rights organizations who spoke at the original event on August 28, 1963, only U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), then-chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), remains alive.  In his extended interview for the documentary, Lewis recounts details of a White House meeting including African American labor union president A. Philip Randolph, the leader of the March on Washington, then-President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy.  Randolph announced the effort for a national nonviolent demonstration – as the Deep South convulsed during the hot 1963 summer of segregationist turmoil and violence.

Throughout the hour, witnesses to the March and people who played vital behind-the-scenes roles organizing the event discuss what it meant to the progress of American civil rights.  Rachelle Horowitz describes how she and other non-African-American young people were drawn to their involvement in the Movement, and later the March.  Years before, she had begun volunteering with civil rights organizations following an accidental meeting with the charismatic Ella Baker and Bayard Rustin at just 17-years old.  By the time of the March, Horowitz played a key role in arranging transportation for demonstrators coming from around the country to Washington, D.C. – and Horowitz helped to recruit her friend, now- U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) to become a March organizer. 

What was it ultimately all for?  Norton was also inspired by Rustin, who was now Randolph’s chief aide for the March.  She puts it this way:

“It [The March] was about the fact that each and every one of us was denied basic rights simply because of the color of her skin.  And we needed somehow to demonstrate that to the country.  Make them do something about it.”

But, Lewis also describes the obsessive concern from the Kennedy Administration regarding the March – and specifically his planned remarks.  Originally, Lewis planned to include a call to continue marching “through the heart of Dixie, the way Sherman did” and wanted to demand, “which side is the federal government on?” 

Fears that Lewis’ speech would incite violence and offend the Kennedys, however, led to an urgent, last-minute conversation with Randolph and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – intended to persuade Lewis to amend and soften his remarks:

“And, Mr. Randolph said, ‘John, we've come this far together.  Can you change this?  Can you delete that?  Let's stay together.’”

International actor and singer Harry Belafonte leveraged his celebrity to heighten awareness to the struggles and violence happening in the South, raised funds for civil rights actions, and recruited other celebrities to participate in the March.  Belafonte attributes the multicultural, multi-faith, multidisciplinary legacy of the March as the reason why the achievement continues to inspire younger generations – and people all over the world.

It has been just over six months since I arrived at CNN. In that time, we have significantly increased our newsgathering resources and launched several new programs, including “Around the World,” “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” “New Day,” “HLN After Dark” and have just announced premiere dates for “Crossfire” and “AC 360 Later.”
And we’ve only just begun. During these past six months, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how we should best organize to meet the needs of an evolving 24-hour, global, multi-platform news environment.
Now, I am pleased to announce some organizational moves that will help do just that.
On the CNN US side, Andrew Morse will join us as SVP, CNN US, overseeing our domestic newsgathering and digital editorial efforts. Andrew joins us from Bloomberg, where he served as Head of US Television and transformed their linear television newsroom into a state-of the-art digital newsgathering operation. Prior to that, Andrew spent 15 years at ABC News, where he did everything from overseeing their entire digital portfolio, to serving as Executive Producer of Weekend GMA, to stints as bureau chief in Asia and producer in London. Andrew will be based in New York and report to me.
With Andrew’s new role, I am taking the opportunity to connect digital and television in a way that I believe any modern news organization must. As you have heard from me since I arrived here, I have been anxious to combine our newsgathering operations across ALL of our platforms. Now, our domestic digital and television editorial teams will report to Andrew, as we continue to drive those teams together. As a result, Meredith Artley and her digital editorial team will now report to Andrew, as will Terence Burke and the entire domestic newsgathering operation. Sam Feist, and the DC editorial and programming teams in the Washington bureau, will also report to Andrew. As a result of this, all of our domestic newsgathering operations now reside in one editorial organization, and I have asked Andrew to continue to drive our digital and television teams even closer together.
KC Estenson will continue to be responsible for our digital business, concentrating on how we deliver our news and information in all the new ways that are emerging every day. KC will continue reporting to Susan Grant, and Meredith will have a dotted line to KC.
In addition, on the CNN US side, Michael Bass will continue as SVP and will now have oversight of our New York and Atlanta based programming, including mornings, dayside, prime time and weekends. Jim Murphy, Janelle Rodriguez and our prime time executive producers will all report to him. Michael will also continue to oversee network wide booking, sponsored content, our Heroes programming, and our in-house documentaries. Michael will be based in New York and report to me.
Amy Entelis, our SVP, Talent and Program Development, will now report directly to me. Our emphasis on new programs, both live and taped, will continue to take on increasing importance. To help bolster that, we are pleased to welcome Nancy Duffy, as VP, Program Development. Nancy joins us from Fox News and will report to Amy, overseeing development of all new live programming. Vinnie Malhotra continues to have responsibility for our acquired series and CNN Films. And Courtney Sexton will be joining Vinnie’s team in Los Angeles, from Participant Media, as Senior Director, CNN Films.
Ken Jautz, EVP, CNN US will focus his attention on our overall operations and financial rigor at CNN US. He will continue to have oversight of Jack Womack’s areas of Operations, Special Events and Newsource. He will also handle day to day financial planning, serving as CNN’s interface with sales, distribution and finance. Ken has been a key partner of mine from the day I got here, and I will continue to rely on his experience and institutional knowledge.
All of these moves are effective August 19th.
With all of these changes on the domestic side, I have asked Tony Maddox to focus his time and attention solely on our international operations. Tony will continue to manage CNN International, CNN en Español, and all of our international news gathering operations. I believe this full time attention on those aspects of the organization will further enhance our international operations. The Row will continue to report to Tony, as well.
On the HLN side, I have some other news. Next week, marks 22 years since Scot Safon came to Turner. He spent the first 11 at TNT, the last 11 at CNN. Recently, Scot approached me with the desire to take a well-deserved break, and to move on to the next phase of his career. I have enjoyed working with Scot, and I am truly sorry to see him go. But I do understand the desire to do something new. Scot will be with us through the end of August. Until a new leader of HLN is named, I have asked Ken Jautz to oversee HLN, in addition to his current CNN responsibilities. Scot’s direct reports, Katherine Green, Tim Mallon and Dean Sicoli, will report to Ken during this interim period.
Scot leaves HLN in a position of strength, enjoying some of its best ratings in years. That is a tribute to Scot, and all of the wonderful people at HLN, both on and off camera. Scot has been a terrific leader, and he will be missed.
We are in the midst of some exciting, transformative times. These moves will make us even stronger. Please join me in thanking Scot, and welcoming Andrew, Nancy and Courtney to CNN.
I hope you enjoy the remaining weeks of summer. It’s bound to be a very busy Fall.

CNN to debut Crossfire, AC 360° Later on Monday, Sept. 16

 Wolf Blitzer Adds Anchoring 1 p.m. Hour of CNN’s Newsroom to his Situation  Room Role

CNN today announced that Crossfire, hosted by Newt Gingrich, Stephanie Cutter, S.E. Cupp and Van Jones, will debut Monday, Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. ET. Also, AC 360° Later, a new prime time program, will air Monday through Thursday at 10 p.m. ET.

Crossfire, the classic debate program, will resemble the show’s original format withpassionate conversation and focus on topical events of the day. The daily, 30-minute program will feature two hosts and guests each night, discussing a range of issues from all sides of the political and cultural spectrum. In addition to the weekday show, the Crossfire co-hosts will appear across the network’s programming.

The centerpiece of AC 360° Later will be a provocative and informed panel conversation, focusing on the day’s news and events. The program will be hosted by Anderson Cooper and will feature a range of opinions and points-of-view from guests and newsmakers. The show will also include CNN correspondents, analysts and commentators plus a special guest each night.

In addition to anchoring The Situation Room from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Wolf Blitzer will add the 1 p.m. hour of Newsroom to his anchor responsibilities beginning Monday, Sept. 16.

                Crossfire, which aired weeknights from 1982 to 2005, examined political and social issues in a televised debate. Conservative Pat Buchanan and liberal Tom Braden were the original hosts of the program, but over the years Crossfire featuredvarious hosts from the right and from the left, including Robert Novak, Tucker Carlson, James Carville and Paul Begala. Guests on the program were frequently top lawmakers from across the political spectrum, but also included an eclectic mix of other personalities: Bob Hope, Rupert Murdoch, Charlton Heston, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Dr. Jack Kevorkian, Rush Limbaugh, Christopher Reeves, Arianna Huffington and Howard Cosell. As the preeminent political talk program, Crossfire cemented its status in the political and cultural lexicon when President Bill Clinton joked during hisremarks at the 1997 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner that the newly opened Newseum featured an exhibit with “CNN’s very first Crossfire-- from the left, Alexander Hamilton, from the right, Aaron Burr, topic, gun control.”

Once considered a more underground activity, marijuana has become increasingly popular over the years, resulting in legalization to grow, sell and smoke it in states like Colorado and Washington.  Cannabis has become one of the most controversial topics in America, but just decades ago it was a legitimate medication on U.S. formulary.  No matter the circumstance, the debate over marijuana still exists and one question remains the same.  Is marijuana bad for you or, could it actually be good for you?

In “Weed” - a one hour documentary premiering on Sunday, August 11^th at 8 pm ET - CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta spends nearly a year traveling the globe to shed light on the debate.

While it is part of a lifestyle for some, it is a lifeline for others including five-year-old Charlotte Figi.  Charlotte suffers from a rare condition called Dravet’s syndrome, making her prone to up to 300 seizures per week.  Like many people who use marijuana for medicinal purposes, parents Paige and Matt Figi tried every other option before resorting to this type of prescription.  Sanjay follows their journey.

Sanjay takes you to Colorado where weed dispensaries and pot cafes have become the norm.  Dealers, doctors, users – Gupta meets with various people, like the Figis, offering a raw insight to what’s been dubbed “The Green Rush.”  He also talks to experts about whether marijuana can be addictive—and whether it can contribute to long-term damage in the brain.

Sanjay’s final stops are in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem where he meets with some of the pioneers behind marijuana study, offering access to decades of innovative and cutting-edge research.
