Produced for HBO and written and directed by Jeffrey Roth and executive produced by Jerry Weintraub, ’41’ was filmed over a 17-month period and tells George Herbert Walker Bush’s story in his own words – providing an intimate glimpse of the life of the 41st president of the United States. Beginning with his childhood memories from time spent at his grandfather’s home at Walker’s Point in Maine, to his experiences as an 18-year-old Naval aviator during World War II, to being a Texas oil man, his time in the U.S. Congress, serving as President Nixon’s Ambassador to China, and ultimately, to his service as vice president and president of the United States, this film spans the very full life of the now 88-year-old former President Bush. Now the Bush family patriarch, the 41st President of the United States, reflects on the highs and lows of his life, from his summer compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, and his presidential library in Texas, with contributions and moving recollections shared with his beloved wife of 67 years, Barbara Bush, and including the presidency of his son, George W. Bush, and his own last election against President Bill Clinton, whom he now counts as a friend.

CNN Analyzed in Today's LA Times

The LA Times posted an article today by Scott Collins about CNN's current ratings trouble. We found it to be an interesting read, here's a sample:

"Many industry watchers say change is long overdue, but CNN sees the presidential campaign as an opportunity to prove the doubters wrong. Its new multimillion-dollar studio in Washington is arriving just in time for the President Obama versus Mitt Romney showdown, even if the convention coverage itself doesn't necessarily promise changes that will make viewers snap to attention. The network will start the convention coverage every morning at 5 Eastern time and continue right through a midnight interview show hosted by Piers Morgan, who hosts its flagship prime-time interview program......

But some influential observers wonder if CNN isn't redefining the meaning of corporate denial.

Jacob Weisberg, editor in chief of the Slate group, said that Twitter has sped up the pace of campaign news and information, making TV increasingly an also-ran in political coverage. And CNN is suffering the most, he argues. "CNN's problem is not that it's neutral; it's that it's bad," he said. "They need to fire most of their people and start over."

Documentaries Set to Air in Advance of RNC and DNC Coverage

CNN will kick off its coverage of the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention with two new, 90-minute documentaries on Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, the two men vying for President of the United States in 2012. Both profiles feature interviews with the candidates, members of their inner circles who know them best, and perspectives from people they have encountered on their separate paths to political prominence.
Romney Revealed: Family, Faith, and the Road to Power is reported by CNN chief political analyst Gloria Borger and will premiere Sunday, August 26, from 8:00pm to 9:30pm ET & PT, the evening before the RNC begins in Tampa, FL. Obama Revealed: The Man, The President is reported by CNN chief White House correspondent Jessica Yellin and will debut Monday, September 3, from 8:00pm to 9:30pm ET & PT, the night before the DNC begins in Charlotte, NC.
“We’re very pleased we were able to work out access to both presidential candidates so that we could produce comprehensive portraits,” said Bart Feder, senior vice president of programming for CNN. “These documentaries deliver informative, nonpartisan political reporting, revealing surprising facets of these men’s lives, and what has shaped them, just before they take center stage at their conventions.”
In Romney Revealed, Borger speaks with Ann and Mitt Romney, and eldest son, Tagg, exploring the lessons Mitt Romney learned while growing up in a family that has been in the public eye for the last 50 years: George Romney was a three-term Republican governor of Michigan who ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 1968. In additional interviews, she speaks with fellow 2002 Olympics organizers and former Bain colleagues, such as Fraser Bullock, an early member of Bain and COO of the Salt Lake City games.
Borger also speaks with Beth Myers, Romney’s chief of staff during his tenure as Massachusetts governor, the head of his 2008 campaign, and the person who vetted his vice-presidential pick. When President Barack Obama came into office he faced towering expectations, a severe economic crisis, and a bitterly divided nation. Obama Revealed looks at the pros and cons of President Obama’s cool demeanor and what happened when his lofty goals met the realities of Washington.
In a one-on-one interview, Yellin speaks with President Barack Obama about his time in office, the challenges he faced, and his ambitions for a second term.
Included in the documentary are original interviews with many of the most senior members of the Obama Administration, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, former director of the White House Economic Council Dr. Larry Summers, and former chairs of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers Austan Goolsbee and Dr. Christina Romer. Larry King's New Venture

"For Larry King, the death of Osama bin Laden provided an awakening. The veteran talk show host had been nudged toward the door by CNN in 2010 after 25 years of interviewing such titans as Frank Sinatra, Tom Cruise and Barack Obama. After that, King had been giving inspirational speeches in far-flung countries, doing an occasional stand-up comedy routine and taping a few TV specials for CNN. One was supposed to run on a Sunday in May 2011. King had dinner guests over that night for a viewing party.Instead, CNN cut to live coverage following the Navy Seals' deadly raid on Bin Laden's compound in Pakistan.
"My first instinct was to run to CNN, to get on top of the story," King said last week during an interview at his Beverly Hills home. "And I missed that. Nothing beats being in the middle of the hunt, in the middle of the scene."
The event spurred the 78-year-old broadcaster back into action. A year ago, King entered a partnership with the world's richest man, Mexican telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim, who is bankrolling a new digital programming service called Ora TV. The venture currently produces just one program, "Larry King Now," which runs on Hulu, the popular online video service."This is a whole new world to me," King said. "I don't do the Internet, and now suddenly I'm in the middle of this."

Another Pilot Shot For CNN.....

From FishbowlDC on August 13th:
By Betsy Rothstein

The dynamic CNN duo of Mark Whitaker and Amy Entelis were at it again Friday, shooting another pilot that they hope could potentially be the savior for a network going through growing pains.

Whitaker, Executive VP and managing editor of CNN Worldwide, and his hire to head program development, Entelis, are joined at the hip in trying to come up with new ideas for the network, desperately hoping the next boss will keep them around when the anticipated senior executive bloodletting comes to pass.

Who is playing Batman and Robin this time? CNN contributors John Avlon and Margaret Hoover an independent and moderate conservative on air, and off, married. That’s right, CNN is seriously thinking about launching a show with a married couple. They’re no James Carville and Mary Matalin, a big liberal and conservative. Some still find them entertaining.

Avlon, a columnist for The Daily Beast, has fast become a favorite of the CNN suits in New York, especially with Whitaker, a longtime member of the NY/DC media elite who, insiders say, would love nothing more than turn CNN into a TV version of the NYT.

Avlon is the designated independent voice on the network, even though he is a former speechwriter for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. He also has a fantastic head of hair.

Hoover, a middle-of-the-road conservative, also has the kind of pedigree that makes Whitaker salivate. She’s the great-granddaughter of former president Herbert Hoover; an author; and landed at CNN several months ago after failing to come to contractual terms with Fox News. She also brings some of that Fox News hotness, which some think CNN could stand to adopt.

The pilots generated by the program development unit at CNN have left much to be desired as of late, so Entelis reached out to the force behind the CNN Heroes initiative, Kelly Flynn, to helm the pilot. She was a former exec in the program development unit when CNN’s former Executive Director of Program and Talent Development Joel Cheatwood, who left for Fox News and is now Exec. VP of Mercury Radio Arts, ran the joint. (Boy is he missed!).

Entelis, Flynn, Avlon and Hoover spent all of Friday shooting the pilot in New York, hoping it will be good enough to impress outgoing CNN head honcho Jim Walton, and Phil Kent, head of Turner. With Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes applying the pressure to resuscitate the dying brand, the effort has an urgent feel.

But Avlon and Hoover should beware of mixing it up on the air. The last CNN married couple that was seen daily – John King and Dana Bash – later headed for Splitsville. Sure, she wasn’t a co-host on John King, U.S.A., but she was on so much when it launched that it should have been called the John and Dana Show.

Live from Multiple Locations in the Convention Halls and CNN Grills, Voters to Have Ringside Seats for RNC, DNC

CNN will offer viewers nonstop, unbiased programming across on-air and digital platforms at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions beginning later this month. The network’s robust political team will travel to Tampa, Fla. and Charlotte, N.C. for live programming and events from locations on the convention floors, sky booths and a studio integrated into the CNN Grills.
CNN anchors Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, Erin Burnett, Piers Morgan, Candy Crowley, Soledad O’Brien, John Berman, Brooke Baldwin and Suzanne Malveaux will be on the ground in Tampa and Charlotte during the Republican and Democratic parties’ respective conventions to provide comprehensive coverage. Special evening programming will kick off each week and will be followed by daily programs beginning at 5 a.m. and continuing through prime time and a midnight broadcast with Piers Morgan. Chief national correspondent John King will be on hand in both convention cities with Magic Wall technology, in addition to chief political analyst Gloria Borger and senior political analyst David Gergen.
“As the only cable news channel that has not picked sides in this election, CNN has a unique lens with which to cover these conventions,” said Sam Feist, CNN Washington bureau chief and senior vice president. “In Tampa and in Charlotte, we will give both parties an opportunity to showcase their platforms while also asking tough questions of Republicans and Democrats. Coverage of the conventions will dominate our air over two weeks as CNN's deep bench of anchors, political reporters and analysts help Americans make an informed choice about their vote.”
A full breakdown of CNN’s programming over the course of the two convention weeks is below.

Say It Ain't So

From Monday's exclusive Post article:

Suffering its worst ratings in 20 years, CNN is going Hollywood.

In the past few weeks, the No. 3 cable news channel has started seeking out reality-show ideas and big-name stars not afraid to talk politics. They have even begun working on a late-night talk show, The Post has learned.

Convinced that its current programming badly needs updating, CNN execs have been making the rounds of Hollywood’s top talent agencies — something entertainment networks do several times a year but a first for the old-line news channel.

In a series of conference calls, the network has also been soliciting ideas from the same producers who supply reality shows to channels like Bravo, Discovery and History, according to sources.

Among the changes in the works, according to documents obtained by The Post, are:

* A late-night talk show featuring a panel — an 11 p.m. version of “The View.”

* Five new reality shows to air on Saturday and Sunday nights — to compliment traveling chef Anthony Bourdain, who is set to debut a new Sunday night CNN show starting early next year.

* A hunt for new on-air personalities outside of traditional TV news. Bourdain is the “prototype” for the new star CNN is now looking for, it is telling Hollywood agents.

A statement released by CNN:
CNN, which recently announced the hiring of Anthony Bourdain as a contributor, is continuing to explore other non-fiction original series for the weekend. We routinely pursue new talent and programming concepts within the news category and often shoot pilots for any number of our networks.

Your Views on the News 8/11/12

The Hollywood reporter published an article by Andrew Tyndall this week that asked 'How Can CNN Benefit From Being Bland'. Here are a few of it's key points:

When it was invented about 30 years ago, CNN solved one of the major shortcomings of television news in the broadcast era: It was on all the time. Instead of waiting for the periodic morning and nightly slots that were assigned to news by broadcasters, the viewer was liberated to tune in to a dedicated news channel at any time of the day or night.
CNN's current problem derives from unfortunate timing: It has lost the knack for attracting viewers to its legacy medium before that transition has been completed. The process of unbundling cable channels to offer a la carte subscriptions -- which inevitably will destroy the current cable channel business plan -- has yet to take hold. And in the meantime, CNN's audience, revenue and reputation are still stuck in the world of cable.
In that context, global ubiquity is a greater asset than domestic popularity. Unlike Fox News or MSNBC, CNN cannot afford to be perceived as too American, too opinionated, too partisan, too idiosyncratic. Its ambition is to be the background channel that is always on everywhere around the world: in airport terminals, in business hotels, in barrooms and boardrooms. Bland is not a bug; it's an advantage. CNN's target audience is not individual viewers but operators and managers who are alienated by anything that is not wallpaper.
CNN's error has been that it only followed the logic of differentiating itself halfway: It avoids the partisanship but still embraces the politics. Its programming is wrongly focused, using an anchor-centric format when CNN viewers crave the absence of opinion.

CNN Suspends Fareed Zakaria For Plagiarism

CNN Suspends Fareed Zakaria For Plagiarism

By DYLAN BYERS for Politico

CNN has joined Time Magazine and suspended Fareed Zakaria following his admission of plagiarism.

"We have reviewed Fareed Zakaria’s TIME column, for which he has apologized," CNN said in a written statement. "He wrote a shorter blog post on CNN.com on the same issue which included similar unattributed excerpts. That blog post has been removed and CNN has suspended Fareed Zakaria while this matter is under review."

Time Magazine suspended Zakaria earlier this afternoon after he admitted to plagiarizing an April article about the National Rifle Association by New Yorker staff writer Jill Lepore.

"TIME accepts Fareed's apology, but what he did violates our own standards for our columnists, which is that their work must not only be factual but original; their views must not only be their own but their words as well," Ali Zelenko, Time's SVP of Communications, said in a statement. "As a result, we are suspending Fareed's column for a month, pending further review."

A CNN spokesperson informs of the changes to CNN's Sunday programming following Zakaria's suspension:

“Your Money with Ali Velshi” will air at 10am on Sunday morning with “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer” airing at 1pm.

CNN Grills Returns for 2012 Conventions

‘CNN Grills’ to Return in 2012 Political Convention Cities
Grills Will Serve as Broadcast Facility and Social Networking Hub in Tampa, Charlotte

CNN will reprise its popular diner concept at the 2012 political conventions with the “CNN Grill” showcasing on-air programming and serving as convention goers’ destination for a mix of good food, good company and lively political conversation. Located just steps from the convention locations, the Grills will operate as home base for the network and also will provide a social hub with nightly convention viewing.
The CNN Grills will be open for the duration of both the Republican National Convention in Tampa from Monday, Aug. 27 through Thursday Aug. 30 and the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte from Monday, Sept. 3 through Thursday, Sept. 6. In Tampa, the Grill will be located across the plaza from the Tampa Bay Times Forum; in Charlotte, the Grill will be open at the EpiCentre on the corner of E. Trade and College Streets, in close proximity to the Time Warner Cable Arena. Each convention day the CNN Grills will be open to invited guests for CNN hospitality and events beginning at 5 p.m. ET.
“The CNN Grill allows us to provide an inside and intimate view of multiple aspects of our presence at the conventions,” said Janet RollĂ©, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for CNN Worldwide. “The combination of live production, engaging interactions and conversation, and great hospitality mirrors the overall experience of convention goers. We’re thrilled to provide a compelling, can’t-miss stop along their way.”
Each CNN Grill location will feature:
• A fully outfitted live broadcast studio integrated into the Grill space.
• Customized menus designed for the Grill that will reflect the local fare in Tampa and Charlotte.
• A dynamic visualization of convention conversation happening across social media networks including, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare.
• An eight-foot touch-screen wall that allows CNN Grill visitors to sample CNN Digital’s must-have elections tools for convention attendees, including: the latest election stories; data and maps; CNN iReports from the RNC and DNC and more.
• Photo booths for guests to capture their convention experience. In addition to producing souvenirs, photo booths will be outfitted with the capability to easily share images across users’ social networks with an auto-generated animated GIF.
CNN pioneered the concept behind the CNN Grills during the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City with the creation of the CNN Diner, which was located at the Tick Tock Diner. In 2008, the network created CNN Grills at the Democratic National Convention in Denver at Brooklyn’s and at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul at the Eagle Street Grill. For the latest convention eateries, Civic Entertainment Group developed and produced the “CNN Grill” concept, while Union Square Hospitality Group, headed by restaurateur Danny Meyer and his team, developed the menu.

Your Views on the News 8/4/12

A few interesting articles about CNN came across our desk this week. According to LimeLife Cooper's ratings are up 27% since coming out in June. Anyone want to give us their opinions?

And yet another article (HuffPo) quoting a CNN exec (this time Bewkes) saying that top management is dissatisfied with CNN's ratings. Seems that the changes are slow to come to CNN but the statements of discontent by management are a dime a dozen. Less talk, more action maybe should be their new mantra?
