Jim Murphy Lands At CNN

Brian Stelter reports, in the NYT,  that Jim Murphy will produce the new CNN morning program with Chris Cuomo and a yet to be announced co-host.  Stelter writes:

In 2011 Mr. Murphy left “G.M.A.” and helped start “Anderson,” the daytime talk show hosted by the CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. Amid behind-the-scenes turmoil over the ratings of the talk show, he stepped down in early 2012.

Blogger's Commentary:

'Stepping down' is being polite, we've heard that Murphy was fired (or maybe we should say forced out?).  But then most realize that Anderson and its reincarnation Anderson Live have been a train wreck from the start and cutting Jim Murphy loose in favor of the current executive producer Terence Noonan is just one of the program's numerous missteps.
CNN and Jeff Zucker, unlike those calling the shots for Anderson's talker, are making a smart move with Murphy.  But he will have his hands full trying to make CNN relevant in the early morning. Good luck Mr. Murphy and welcome aboard.

CNN Evening Programs Show Growth/Gap Narrows with MSNBC

CNN NARROWS THE GAP WITH MSNBC

The Network Tops MSNBC during Dayside

CNN Evening Programs Show Growth vs. a Year Ago; FNC has Steep Declines in Key Demo

In February, CNN narrowed the total day gap with MSNBC to only -9k in total viewers (424k vs. 433k) and -11k in 25-54 (130k vs. 141k). At its recent monthly peak (October 2012), the gap was -180k in P2+ and -72k in 25-54.  Last month it was -43k in 2+ and -26k in target demo.

CNN also topped MSNBC during dayside programming (9a-5p) in both total viewers (475k vs. 412k) and in the key demo 25-54 (129k vs. 119k) this month.

Other CNN ratings highlights include:

Erin Burnett Outfront
  • Outfront was the only 7p show to grow vs. competitors – increasing +15% in total viewers (482k vs. 420k) and up +11% in the demo (148k vs. 133k) vs. last February.   Fox Report with Shep Smith was flat in P2+ and down -21% in the key demo and Hardball was down -7% in total viewers and off -5% in 25-54.

Anderson Cooper 360
  • AC 360 at 8p had the most growth this month in cable news prime – increasing +42% in total viewers (791k vs. 559k) and +27% among 25-54 (236k vs. 186k) compared to a year ago.  While AC 360 grew this month, The O’Reilly Factor was down -3% in total viewers and -26% in 25-54 and The Ed Show declined -14% and -10% respectively.  This represents O’Reilly’s worst delivery at 8p since July 2008 in key demo 25-54. Outside of the November 2012 (Election) and March 2011 (Japan Tsunami), this month represents CNN’s best performance at 8p in over three years in both total viewers and 25-54.

Piers Morgan Tonight
  • Last year the cable news networks saw heightened viewing due to the political primaries, debates and the death of Whitney Houston. This year at 9pm all the nets saw declines vs. a year ago with PMT registering the smallest among total viewers (-3%), while FNC’s Hannity was off -11% and MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show was down -6%.  In the demo 25-54, Hannity was down the most of all the networks, dropping -35% -- representing the Hannity’s worst demo delivery since May 2006.

The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer
  • The Sit Room posted increases at 6p vs. a year ago -- growing +15% in total viewers (522k vs. 455k) and increasing an impressive +25% in the key demo 25-54 (158k vs. 126k).  The show also grew the most vs. the competition, with FNC’s Special Report declining -15% in the demo and MSNBC’s Politics Nation declining -8% in total viewers.

CNN Joins Forces with Soledad O’Brien’s New Production Company

CNN Joins Forces with Soledad O’Brien’s New Production Company
Starfish Media Group Will Produce Specials and Documentaries for CNN

CNN is entering into a production and distribution agreement with critically-acclaimed journalist Soledad O’Brien, whose new production company will produce long-form programming specials for the network it was announced today by Jeff Zucker, president CNN Worldwide. O’Brien’s company, which will launch in June, will produce three long-form programming specials for CNN in 2014. Those specials will include one of the network’s most successful franchises, Black in America.  O’Brien’s new production company, Starfish Media Group, in conjunction with CNN, will act as the exclusive worldwide distributor of previous documentaries featuring O’Brien.  She will also host the 2013 CNN Black in America documentary, which will air later this year.

“We greatly value Soledad’s experience, and her first-rate storytelling will continue to be an asset to CNN,” said Zucker. “Documentaries and long-form story telling are important to our brand and we’re anticipating more of what we’ve come to expect from her -- riveting content.”

“The new partnership opportunity allows me to focus on what I love to do the most, and to focus on the next stage of my career, owning my own work,” said O’Brien, “At CNN, I am grateful to have been able to tell often underreported stories and confront difficult topics.  In the new production venture, I will continue to shine a light on what we all find most interesting about America.”

As anchor and special correspondent for CNN,  O’Brien has been integral in hosting and developing the award winning Black in America franchise, one of the network’s most successful international franchises, as well as reporting breaking news from around the globe. In 2011, she won her first Emmy for Crisis in Haiti (Anderson Cooper 360) in the category of Outstanding Live Coverage of a Current News Story – Long Form. O'Brien was part of the coverage teams that earned CNN a George Foster Peabody award for its BP oil spill and Katrina coverage and an Alfred I. duPont Award for its coverage of the Southeast Asia tsunami. The National Association of Black Journalists named O’Brien the Journalist of the Year and Edward R. Murrow Awards lauded her with the RTDNA/UNITY award for Latino in America in 2010.

Starfish Media Group is a 360 media production company and distributor, dedicated to uncovering and producing empowering stories that take a challenging look at often divisive issues of race, class, wealth, opportunity, poverty and personal stories.  Starfish Media Group will produce both long-form reporting for CNN and other platforms, as well as theatrical and scripted television projects. In addition to Starfish Media Group, Soledad, along with her husband Brad, will also continue to run the Soledad O’Brien and Brad Raymond Foundation, that sends two dozen young women to and through college (obrienraymondfoundation.org).
