The latest CNN-ORC Poll released on Sunday have Present Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney in a tie at 49% each.
John King was working the maps and also joined in the anaylsis with Dana Bash, David Gergen, Van Jones, Alex Castellanos and Gloria Borger. Jessica Yellin was with the President in Ohio and 2 other States today.Jim Acosta reported from Pennsylvania while traveling with the Romney campaign.

CNN Names Jessica Yellin Chief White House Correspondent
Jessica Yellin will join CNN’s White House unit, it was announced today by Sam Feist, Washington bureau chief and senior vice president. Yellin begins her new assignment as chief White House correspondent immediately. “Jessica Yellin has emerged as one of the leading political reporters in Washington, ” said Feist. “Jessica’s assertiveness along with her clever insight made her one of the top reporters of the 2008 campaign and has already set her apart in her reporting on the 2012 campaign. We’re thrilled Jessica will now bring her outstanding political journalism to our White House coverage.” “This is a dream assignment,” said Yellin. “I’m honored CNN is putting its faith in me and humbled by the responsibility of covering the White House during these challenging times—and as we head into an election. I look forward to providing our viewers an honest assessment of the policies and the politics that affect our lives everyday.”
Congratulations to Jessica Yellin for her Gracie Award win. According to TV Newser Yellin won for Outstanding Hard News Feature. Other CNN winners include CNN Presents "Black In America" for Outstanding Documentary and Larry King Live for Outstanding Talk Show - News for their interview with Katherine Callaway Hall. A gala for the awards will be held in LA on May 25.
Kiki Ryan from Politico reviewed an event held this past weekend at the Washington, D.C. home of Juleanna Glover in honor of Rebecca Project for Human Rights.
According to the charity's website, they are a national legal and policy organization that advocates for public policy reform, justice and dignity for vulnerable families. The Rebecca Project strives to reform child welfare, criminal justice, and substance abuse policies that impact the lives of vulnerable families. [They] frame the pervasiveness of violence against women and girls, the draconian conditions that too often characterize maternal incarceration, and the dearth of access to health and healing for mothers and their children, as fundamental human rights violations. [They] seek to stop the shattering cycle of violence, trauma and addiction. [They] seek to urge for policies and practices that honor, strengthen, and render whole the sacred ties between parents and children. [They] affirm the worth and dignity of every child, every family.

A few quick highlights from this morning's State of the Union with John King. Today's program focused on health reform, the war in Afghanistan, and the economy.
King interviewed White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Senator John Kerry.
During the first part of the Sounds of Sunday, we heard from Bill Bennett, Donna Brazile, and David Gergen.
The conversation continued with the addition of Jessican Yellin and Gloria Borger.
The Last Word went to Hew Hampshire's Republican Senator Judd Gregg.
King visited his 40th state this week: Alaska. He took a look at the impact the recession has had in this week's American Dispatch as well as spoke with Zina Egbert, David Newlon, and Dan King in Wasilla, Alaska for the CNN Diner segment.
State of the Union with John King started off this morning with a discussion with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen and The US Ambassador to Afghanistan, Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry (Ret.). The discussion focused on the recent election in Afghanistan (results from the election have not been determined); US troop levels in Afghanistan; whether or not the public understands the mission in Afghanistan; fighting drug production and replacing it with food crops; troop levels in Iraq (can the decrease in troops continue?); and the release of the Lockerbie bomber.
Next, King spoke live with three Senators: Sen. Richard Lugar (R), Sen. Joe Lieberman (I), and Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D) in the DC Studio. The Senators were asked about the impact the release of the Lockerbie bomber will have on the US relations with Libya (which had been on the path of improvement); and the war in Afghanistan: what are the objectives? what are the appropriate troop levels? how long will we be there?
King then asked the panel about health care reform.
And finally, King asked Lieberman about a quote from Alec Baldwin that was in the July/August issue of Playboy magazine.
King stayed focus on the military with his America Dispatch this week. He visited Fort Riley to talk to the families that have members serving overseas.
At 10AM, it was time for Howard Kurtz and Reliable Sources. Kurtz spoke with Steve Kroft and Jeff Fager about the passing of Don Hewitt.
Next, Kurtz spoke with Jeff Jarvis. If you're a frequent reader of Buzz Machine then you're already familiar with Jarvis' announcement earlier this month that he has prostate cancer. Kurtz questioned him about his decision to be very public about his diagnosis and treatment options.
Kurtz' next panel included Anne Kornblut, David Frum, and Clarence Page. They talked about the White House blaming the press' coverage as well as O'Reilly versus Stewart in comments made about the town hall meeting protesters.
George Gombossy, a former reporter for the Hartford Courant, who says that he was fired because he did a negative story about an advertiser talked wtih Kurtz.
The final two segments focused on the career of Robert Novak, who passed away earlier this week and Jayson Blair's new career as a life coach.

The CNN Diner segment was from Junction City, Kansas. King talked with Denise Ott, Buz Bruzina, and Bill Speer at Stacy's Restaurant.
Ed Henry, Jessica Yellin, and Dana Bash joined King in the studio for the final panel discussion of the hour. The topics that they covered this morning included: the Lockerbie bomber release, the war in Afghanistan, and health care legislation. The Lightening Round was all about wee-wee and Playboy...
That brings us to the 12PM hour and a repeat of a large portion of the first hour of the program. 44 minutes later, live programming resumed with The Last Word. This week, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D) was the last guest of the morning and the interview focused on health care reform.

John King was back in Washington D.C. for this morning's State of the Union.
The program started with an interview with the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice. King asked her about the "show trial" of over 100 dissenters in Iran as well as the three American hikers who are being held in Iran (and other US citizens being held there). The Ambassador spoke of wanting to talk to Iran about stopping their nuclear program. When asked about whether the release of the two journalists from North Korea was "negotiating with terrorist", she denied that this was an official visit but reinforced that the trip was a "private humanitarian mission".
In the second part of the interview, King asked Amb. Rice about what the Obama administration is doing differently. In the list of ways that this administration was different, the Ambassador mentioned the approach taken in Afghanistan. King must have been waiting for this, for it prompted him to head to the magic wall and bring up a graphic of the troop levels currently in Afghanistan. And he asked why there weren't more allied troops helping. Rice contended that the involvement of other nations had increased with not only with troops as well as assistance in training security forces in Afghanistan. The administration's goal is to dismantle, disrupt, and defeat al Qaeda.
King's next guests were Sens. Dick Durbin (D) and John Cornyn (R) to discuss unemployment and health care reform. Cornyn wouldn't automatically oppose extended unemployment benefits if it was necessary. Durbin spoke about the negotiations that are still underway to try to get a bipartisan bill for health care. Durbin supports a public option for health care, but is open to other options if it will get the bill passed. Next was a discussion about the controversy over the town hall meetings on health care . King posed the question: "This country was founded on a whole series of events, including the Boston Tea Party in my home town, where people were organized and instructed and they were instructed to go somewhere and raise hell. Is there anything wrong with that? " Durbin: yes, when it is done just to disrupt the meeting.
The next discussion was with two pollsters: Republican pollster Bill McInturff and Democratic pollster Peter Hart. King started off at the magic wall comparing polls taken at the six month mark between President Obama and President Bush. The poll asked whether the President had been successful so far: Obama 51%; Bush 56%. He also looked at the conditions each President had faced from Carter to Obama. The discussion wrapped up with the following:
KING: Where are the American people, right now, in their new president, again, just shy of seven months?
Do they view him as a competent leader, not a politician who can win a campaign but someone to govern the economy?
HART: I think two things. One, I think they see him as competent. I think, on all the, sort of, skill sets, they see him as very good. I think the one thing that they don't know is how strong and how steely is his backbone?
And I think that will be measured in the future. If they perceive him to be strong and tough, they'll stay with him.
MCINTURFF: I think the president's been given a long rope. They want him to succeed. But to your question, we have two very important races coming up, New Jersey and Virginia governor's races. There's lots of polling that independent swing voters and others that had moved to vote for Obama are shifting back to vote for Republican candidates in those races.
I don't always take these races seriously as a harbinger of what's to come. I do this year. I think that what we seem, in terms of the vote pattern, in terms of turnout, and what we see in terms of those votes could be an early warning shot.
And I would say, by the way, if the Democrats lose both races, the Democrats in Congress are going to be taking a long, long look before they jump on some of these additional votes that they're going to be asked to make by the Obama administration.
The second hour of the program was with Howard Kurtz and Reliable Sources. The first topic was outrage at recent town hall meetings. The panel included Mark Halperin, Ana Marie Cox, and S.E. Cupp. Mark Halperin hit the nail on the head right off the bat:
HALPERIN: Yes, it distorts it and it's also bad for America. I'm embarrassed about what's going on as an American. I'm not an advocate for any position on the president's proposals, but I think this is, Howie, something you have written about and seen for years, the lowest common denominator, people taking video that is meaningless.
Yes, there should be discussion. Dissent is fine. I don't care why the protesters are showing up, but this is a horrible breakdown of our political culture and our media culture to allow people who are going in with the intent to disrupt to become the story. The biggest issue in the health care debate, things like, should there be a public plan, completely ignored by all media and crowded out the discussion by stunts and gimmicks, and the White House has exacerbated it by attacking back on the same style.
Kurtz interviewed Linda Douglas, Communications Director for the White House Office of Health Reform, about the administration's efforts to battle misinformation about their health care policies. The White House is going to setup a website that will specifically address this problem. Douglas was a former journalist (30 years in the profession after working for both ABC and CBS). She dodged Kurtz' question about having once been on his side of the table and now working as a "sales person" for the Obama health care reforms.
Kurtz then took a look at the coverage of journalists Laura Ling and Enu Lee return from North Korea and how the Clinton's became the central focus of the story with a panel including: Terence Smith, Kimberly Dozier, and Julie Mason. The panel discussed the overall coverage of the detainment of these journalists and why this wasn't a front burner story.
Next, Kurtz got Will Leitch's reaction to some NFL teams and ESPN restricting the use of Twitter and Facebook.
Kurtz' final segment was on the MSNBC vs FOX battle of words that continues.
The pundit hour of State of the Union started off with John King reviewing the Sounds of Sunday.
The first panel this week included Donna Brazile and Ed Gillespie. they debated the health care legislation including whether a public option should be part of the package. Brazile came prepared with multiple charts and talking points. As the conversation turned to the economy, King pointed out that Brazile was quoted in the Washington Post this morning in a column about what the President should focus on while Congress is on vacation.
The second part of the panel discussion focused on the international issues including the comments from General Jim Jones on the war in Afghanistan and President Clinton's trip to North Korea.
The CNN Diner segment came from Brails Restaurant in Eugene, Oregon (home of Euguene's best hangover breakfast). Matthew Jordan, Sang Joo "Joy" Knudtson, and Michael Moffitt joined King for breakfast.
Next on the program was the journalist panel: Ed Henry, Jessica Yellin, and Dan Balz. (Balz has a new book out: The Extraordinary Election of 2008: The Battle for America 2008 that he co-authored with Haynes Johnson. King gave the book a thumbs up as a good "beach read.") The panel discussed Sen. Durbin's comments on health care reform and a public option. They also discussed the town hall meeting that have been getting a lot of attention because of the outbursts that have been occurring at them. Balz summed it up well: "failure is not option" this time around as it comes to health care. The Democrats couldn't get this done the last time that tried- they may be determined to pass something.
When they came back from the commercial break, the panel discussed how the President has been reacting to criticism (something that he wasn't very good at prior to the campaign). The next topic was Afghanistan and the possibility of needing to send additional troops which is not what many Democrats want to see nor do the left wing of the party.
One more commercial break and then the lightening round: Sarah Palin vs Howard Dean and who to watch over the next week.
That wrapped up the third hour of the program and thus started the repeat of the 9AM hour as well as the Brazile/ Gillespie panel discussion. 43 minutes later...
Live programming returned with John King talking to Senator Arlen Specter in the Last Word segment. Specter was at one of those town hall meetings where things got heated. Specter supports (and wants) the public option for health care, but is willing to listen to Republican proposals. The Senator helped to kill the Clinton health care reform plan. King asked the Senator to respond to criticisms that Rep. Sestak made on a previous State of the Union program. The Senator cast a few stones at Rep. Sestak in response. King asked the Senator two questions about recent polls that were done about his re-electablity and the Senator had an issue with both polls. The Senator will campaign in all 67 counties in Pennsylvania and let the voters decide.
And there's a new way to follow CNN's State of the Union: Black Planet. From the look of the page, this was something that was only added this week (they only have one friend at the moment).

One of the great joys of being an American (aside from ridiculing the French, of course) is sharing in certain enduring myths: Bigfoot, the cultural value of ice shows and the grassroots political movement.
That last one has never been more popular. The more our politicians research, poll and prepackage their positions, selling them to voters like so many burgers in a fast-food joint, the more fervently they deny any such marketing. The audiences they face are increasingly handpicked, the posters the crowd waves come from the print shop, and the letters from citizens to their opposing colleagues are cranked out of the laser printer by the thousands. Yet our fearless leaders insist every scrap of support for their position is nothing but a great, natural uprising of common voters. They call it grassroots, but when the opposition does the same thing, that’s sod.
No John King this morning on State of the Union. Jessica Yellin anchored the program in his place. Yellin started the program with a live in studio interview with Christina Romer, Chair of the WH Council of Economic Advisors. They discussed the economy and the unemployment rate. Romer believes that after five months the stimulus package is working and will deliver 3.5 millions jobs (either created or saved) by the end of 2010. Yellin also asked her about corporate executive bonuses.
Romer is the only woman on the White House Council of Economic Advisors.
Next on the program was a taped interview that John King did with Senator John McCain. They talked about the economy and the long term impact the stimulus package will have. McCain conceded that the stimulus package has provided "short-term improvements."
When the Senator described the blue dog democrats he used phrases like: bark and no bite and roll over and play dead. He doesn't see that Washington has changed any with Obama as President.
King also asked McCain about whether or not he will support Judge Sotomayor's Supreme Court nomination. Senator McCain will be spending at least part of his August recess overseas. King asked him about whether additional troops would be required in Afghanistan and about nuclear concerns with Iran. McCain criticized the US' allies for relying too much on diplomacy.
And of course, King had to ask about Palin's resignation. Senator McCain "respects" her decision. When asked about who he would support in the 2012 Republican primary, he wouldn't comment.
And another taped segment from John King- this one about Blue Dog Democrats in his American Dispatch. He went to western Idaho to talk to conservative voters.

Later in the program, we saw some of the same people in the CNN Diner segment. He was at Bud's diner and spoke to Dr. Patricia Bauer, Don Griesel, and William Bauer. They talked about Fmr Gov. Palin, health care reform, and how President Obama has done over the first 200 days of his administration.
Reliable Sources with Howard Kurtz started off this morning with comments made by Glenn Beck about the President being a racist. The first panel included Michel Martin, Amanda Carpenter, and Michelle Cottle. Cottle summed it up well: "crazy sells."
The next was a discussion about the birther debate and CNN's Lou Dobb's commentary. FOX's O'Reilly defended Dobbs; MSNBC's Maddow criticized him and Dobb's fought back by calling her names. And what would a discussion about last week's media be without bringing up the beer summit- when has four men sitting around a table drinking a beer received so much coverage?
The same panel also discussed remarks that Former Governor Palin's made about the media. (She just won't go away, will she?)
The next panel included Harvey Levin, Sharon Waxman, and Amy Argetsinger . They discussed the reliability of trusting TMZ as a source.
Next, Kurtz interviewed a fifteen year old journalist from the Bronx: Myles Miller. He's the Political Editor for Children's Press Line
. Here's a quick quote from the interview that gives me hope for the next generation of journalists:
I mean, I think that as a journalist, I'm very objective. I make sure that all my questions are asked from a point of view that don't have my opinion in it. And I also make sure that the reporters that I manage are asking questions that are objective because I feel that that's the integrity of journalism.
We've lost integrity a lot. And I feel that we are the ones who are going to bring it back.

Jessica Yellin was back for the 11AM hour and the Sounds of Sunday or as I like to call it: the hour of pundits. First panel for this hour included Bill Bennett and Donna Brazile. They talked about the economy and whether or not there has been any improvement and whether or not the stimulus package has anything to do with it. They debated the lack of change inside the beltway (what happened to bipartisan legislation/ Congress). Brazile compared the health care legislative debate to "sausage making" and that some of the ingredients she wouldn't have accepted.
The next panel included Chris Cillizza, Karen Tumulty, and Peter Baker. They discussed possible tax increases in order to pay for health care reform, the economic recovery (will it be a jobless recovery), health care reform, the "Cash for Clunkers" program, reform on the housing market and on Wall Street, and Fmr. Gov. Palin's relationship with the media.
Then a report introduced by Deborah Brunswick that is part of the CNN series called In Focus. A Health Care Co-op that includes a doctor on a motocycle.
This brings us to the beginning of the noon "repeat" hour. Live broadcasting resumed 44 minutes later for the Last Word.
Joseph Stiglitz joined Yellin via satellite to discuss possible tax increases. Stiglitz thinks that we may need more stimulus packages and argued that the deficit would be just as high even if we didn't have the stimulus spending.

Picture a car careening down a Los Angeles freeway in rush hour with the driver crunching a phone between his cheek and shoulder, one hand holding a sputtering tape recorder, the other furiously scribbling in a notebook, all while he steers with his knees. Here is a great truth of the American roadway: I have multitasked at 70 mph in heavy traffic like a Zen master.
But now, like a congressman caught in a sex scandal, I am ready to swear I’ll never do it again.
At least when it comes to the practice of messaging or texting while behind the wheel.
A new report coming out of Virginia Tech’s Transportation Institute says texting while driving is not merely dangerous, but something akin to juggling rabid cats. Try it enough times and you’ll get hurt. In real studies of real drivers in real traffic, the researchers found that truckers were 23 times more likely to have an accident if texting, and Tom Dingus, who runs the VTTI, says there is no reason for the rest of us to think we’ll do any better.
State of the Union with John King started with a report on the proof of life video of a US soldier captured in Afghanistan with Barbara Starr. Later in the program, King reported that the Defense Department had identified the soldier as Pfc. Bowie Bergdahl of Ketchum, Idaho.
The first guest on the program was Peter Orszag the White House Budget Director to discuss the numbers on the health care legislation.
They also discussed the economy and the impact of the stimulus package and the budget deficit.
King talked with Senator Patrick Leahy (D) and Senator Jeff Sessions (R) on the confirmation hearings for Judge Sotomayor. Senator Leahy pointed out that he has voted on the confirmation of every member of the current Supreme Court. King tried multiple times to get Sen. Sessions to commit one way or another to how he planned to vote on the confirmation.
King mentioned that today's Reliable Sources would be discussing the passing of Walter Cronkite. King shared his thoughts on Friday night's coverage (which he anchored during both Larry King Live and Anderson Cooper 360) in the behind the scenes video clip for this week.
As part of the American Dispatch series, King reported from Newark, New Jersey talking to Mayor Cory Booker (D) who was offered a position in the Obama administration, but turned it down to focus on local politics.
Howard Kurtz was on with Reliable Sources at 10AM. His focus the first half of the hour on the death of the CBS anchorman, Walter Cronkite. Kurtz talked with Bob Schieffer, Susan Zirinsky, Bernard Shaw, Don Hewitt, Connie Chung, Daniel Schorr, and Sandy Sokoloff.
Kurtz then turned the program to the coverage of the Supreme Court nominee with Terry Moran, Dahlia Lithwick, and Jim Geraghty. Kurtz talked to Moran about the ratings success of Nightline and also grilled Moran on Nightline's decision to lead with the Michael Jackson story 12 out or 15 nights.
Wrapping up the hour, Kurtz reported on the release of emails to Gov. Sanford from various people in the media attempting to get the Governor to come appear on their programs. John King was one of those whose emails were being critiqued.

Donna Brazile and Bill Bennett were in the Washington, D.C. studio with John King this morning. The topics this morning were the Sotomayor confirmation hearing and the health care reform legislation and whether or not it is going to make it through Congress.

The next panel had Ed Henry, Jessica Yellin, and Dana Bash discussing the Obama administration's August health care deadline as well as Secretary of State Clinton's comments on the vetting process for appointed positions within the Federal government.
The first 36 minutes of the noon hour was a repeat of interviews that were done during the first hour of the program. The Last Word this week went to Rev. Jesse Jackson. King asked Jackson about how the Obama administration was treating the older generation of African American leaders as well as how civil rights had progressed over the past 25 years.

Programming News: This morning's New York Times is reporting that Joy Behar is joining HLN to host a 9 p.m. talk show. Behar's program will premier in the Fall and bump the repeat of Lou Dobbs, which hasn't been drawing great numbers. To read more just click on the link.
