Sanjay Gupta: Cheating Death NYC Book Party

NY Post's Cindy Adams spoke to CNN's Sanjay Gupta about his book Cheating Death at a book signing party held earlier this month.

GERONTOLOGISTS or biologists or sociologists or physiologists or whatever kind of ologists scientifi cally decree that man's life span has been extended eight years. Dr. Sanjay Gupta told me that Monday, the very day of the announcement.

Said CNN's chief medical correspondent: "A woman's average previous life span has been 72; men, 70. We now add eight years onto that. It's not due to the stress of work that men have two years less because today women also share that same environment. It's just something about the male gene."

However, you'll only live longer if you do not meet Sanjay's staff. They are injurious to your health. They'll tell you how in the '60s, his mother, in a sari, was the first-ever woman engineer at Ford. They'll constantly say how wonderful, patient, kind, intelligent, caring, helpful, loving he is. You could meet them healthy and come away with diabetes.

It was a book party this week for his just-published "Cheating Death." After Dr. Sanjay Gupta hugged Dr. Deepak Chopra, I asked if, with elder abuse increasing, is life worth extending? He said: "Many parts of the world, like Japan, which has the highest concentration of centenarians, respect elders. America discards people from the work force at 65. This country cannot further physical changes without also making cultural changes.

MTV & CNN team up to honor Vets

Anderson Cooper and Michael Ware report
from Baghdad, September 14, 2007

Hey, everyone! Yes, I'm back from the land of painkillers and am fulfilling my blog-swapping duties with Ms. Sapphire, who so graciously replaced me while I went under the knife. (Sounds so much more dramatic that way, doesn't it?)

I have something pretty cool to post about today, too... and it features my favorite CNN'er, so you know that makes me doubly happy!
MTV's Choose or Lose campaign and CNN Worldwide today announced they've teamed up to host a cross-network television event that includes a concert to mobilize support for our country's newest generation of young veterans and news programming on both MTV and CNN highlighting young veterans' stories of triumph, as well as issues facing those veterans as they return from battle.

Leading artists from multiple genres will take-part in "A Night for Vets: An MTV Concert for the BRAVE," taped in New York City on October 23 and airing on MTV on October 24, to raise awareness of veterans' causes, including employment, healthcare, homelessness, and education. CNN will air "Anderson Cooper 360: Back from the Battle," a special that delves into the stories of several young vets and the challenges facing them, on October 25 and October 26 at 8 p.m. ET. Additionally, MTV today announced the Bill of Rights for American Veterans (BRAVE), a petition created in partnership with a group of top non-partisan veterans' organizations calling on elected officials to support veterans' issues and swiftly enact positive legislative changes.

"A Night for Vets: An MTV Concert for the BRAVE" will air Friday, October 24, 2008, at 8pm ET on MTV, followed by airings on MTV2, mtvU and MTV Tr3s. The special, hosted by MTV News Correspondent Sway Calloway and taped before an audience of specially invited young veterans and their families, will feature live performances by artists including 50 Cent, Ludacris and Saving Abel and taped performances from Kanye West, Kid Rock, Angels + Airwaves, Fall Out Boy, Juanes, Nelly and Taylor Swift, performing songs dedicated to our nation's veterans. Beyonce, Will Ferrell, Cameron Diaz, Common, Fat Joe, Seth Green, Elizabeth Banks, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, James Marsden and Wyclef Jean will make taped appearances throughout the concert to show their support for our nation's young heroes. The special will also include an interview with CNN international correspondent Michael Ware, via satellite from Baghdad. MTV News and CNN news packages, introduced by CNN's Anderson Cooper, will air throughout the show. Headline News' anchor Robin Meade (Morning Express with Robin Meade) will conduct interviews with young veterans in the audience. Additionally, the show will screen online in the MTV Virtual World. Viewers will be able to watch the concert in full and interact with some of the artists participating in the show.

"It doesn't matter where you stand on the war -- we can all agree that young veterans serving our country must receive the benefits they've earned for their sacrifices," said Van Toffler, President of MTV Networks. "By raising awareness through 'A Night for Vets: An MTV Concert for the BRAVE,' and by launching the BRAVE petition, we aim to elevate these issues and ensure they're a top priority for our government officials."

"We are honored to help shine a light on the issues facing young veterans, and to bring these veterans' stories to both the CNN and MTV audiences," commented Jon Klein, president, CNN/U.S.

"Anderson Cooper 360: Back from the Battle," hosted by Cooper, will highlight the challenges facing young vets returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Cooper will report on families left behind to deal with the stress of wartime deployment, and the mixed emotions of pride, fear, and even detachment. Cooper will also report on Homes for Our Troops, a small, non-profit organization that started when builder John Gonsalves realized many soldiers were returning with disabilities but no suitable place to live; Cooper is there as they enter their new homes for the first time. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon and CNN's senior medical correspondent, will revisit and update the amazing tale of Jesus Vidana, a young Marine whose life Gupta saved when he operated on him while embedded with U.S. troops. Gupta will also examine the impact of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on the lives and families of troops returning home from battle. CNN's Baghdad-based correspondent Michael Ware reunites with a soldier he followed into the battle of Fallujah to see how much of the war in Iraq he has brought home with him. The special will also include footage, interviews, and other highlights from the October 23rd concert.
You can read and sign the BRAVE petition on the MTV website.

Earlier this week, CNN announced that they will begin daily broadcasts from the Abu Dhabi media center:
CNN International plans to start broadcasting live daily programming from its new broadcast center in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates in a landmark move that signals the global network’s significantly expanded commitment to the Middle East. The as-yet-titled CNN International program marks CNN’s first regularly scheduled program from the region.

The development is part of ongoing plans for CNN’s new broadcast and production center set to open in the Abu Dhabi Media Zone in early 2009. In addition to the daily, local prime-time newscast, the new production center will provide the infrastructure for expanded newsgathering activities throughout the region. The center enhances CNN’s existing presence in the region which currently comprises news operations in Amman, Jordan; Baghdad, Iraq; Beirut, Lebanon; Cairo; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and Jerusalem and is part of the company’s ongoing newsgathering expansion which over this year has seen more than 50 additional staff and more newsgathering operations in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

CNN’s Abu Dhabi operation complements the network’s ongoing presence in Dubai as well as existing international broadcast facilities in London, Hong Kong and Mexico City and U.S. production centers in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., New York and Los Angeles.

“Our UAE expansion is one of our boldest editorial undertakings of recent years and one that builds on our existing newsgathering heritage in the region,” said Tony Maddox, managing director for CNN International. “For a global news organization, the Middle East was the logical choice for an investment of this scale. Our new operation in Abu Dhabi will enable us to continue to meet and exceed the demands of our audiences at a time when many of our competitors are having to retrench.”

The expansion cements CNN’s desire for a broad presence in the United Arab Emirates at a time when the Middle East is making headlines in the political, business and cultural arenas.

“With a successful long standing operation in Dubai, the natural next step is to have a base in the capital city,” Maddox said. “We have long covered the Middle East region comprehensively on our air, and now we will have the on-the-ground infrastructure to serve, support and facilitate that coverage to the next level through these complementary operations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This groundbreaking initiative allows us to put news from the Middle East right at the heart of our output in a proper reflection of the role the region is playing on the world stage and is a significant plank in our ongoing newsgathering expansion.”

In addition to the launch of live daily news programming, CNN will also move the production of its popular Middle East-focused feature programs Inside the Middle East and Marketplace Middle East to the new center.

The new CNN hub will be a custom-built news center overseen by the newly created role of managing editor CNN Abu Dhabi. The operation will house approximately 30 staff including a new CNN International anchor and programming, production and newsgathering staff who will play a key role in increasing CNN’s coverage of the Persian Gulf region and the wider Middle East for all of CNN Worldwide’s networks.

The new production center in Abu Dhabi marks another significant step in CNN’s content ownership strategy launched at the end of last year. This has seen the network invest heavily in new news operations around the world as part of its commitment to producing premium news content for its audiences across CNN’s many platforms and services.

In November 2007, CNN announced the hiring of an additional 50 staff including 12 new correspondent positions. CNN also announced plans to open new editorial operations in Kabul, Afghanistan, and Santiago, Chile.

CNN Exclusives and Clips

If you receive Robin Meade's daily newsletter, you will have heard that Robin has been away for a few days on a special assignment. Well it was revealed today on most CNN programming that Robin got the first one-on-one interview with the three American former hostages who had been in held in captivity in Colombia for the last five years.

To see more of the interview, you can check out Morning Express with Robin Meade on Friday morning at 6AM and you can also check out a couple of blog posts that Robin wrote about on her blog.

This Saturday and Sunday night at 8PM EST Don Lemon hosts a special called "Daughters of Legacy".

"To the world, they are activists, leaders, icons. But these women know them as "Dad." The daughters of MLK, Ali, Malcolm X, Johnnie Cochran and Sidney Poitier... in their first conversation, together."

Tonight I leave you with a few clips from the past week on CNN programming.

During Saturday morning's News Room the love and hugs were spread all around in the newsroom. It is to nice to see how much Veronica, TJ, Josh and Reynolds enjoy working with each other.

During Sunday night's special "The Survival Project: One Child at a Time". A few celebrities made an appearance. I clipped the segment with Clay Aiken, Nicole Ritchie, Al Roker and others.

For all the Morning Express with Robin Meade fans, you probably noticed that Robin has not been on this week Well Robin posted a blog post on the new Morning Express blog about her "working vacation".

Hello from my “working” vacation
Posted: 11:15 AM ET

Hi guys…

Many thanks to our fellow blogging viewers. YES! I do read all of your comments!
I’m not exactly on vaca this week…I’m actually working on my book, due out next year. A publishing company came to me and asked if I’d do it.
What subjects would interest you for this non-fiction/motivational/inspirational/how-to/autobiographical book? I already have a working plan, but would love to hear from you too.
So, keep posting your comments!

Alrighty…back to the working “vacation.” Miss ya!

Looking forward to seeing the end result of Robin's upcoming book.

What post would be complete without some fun clips on Thursday.

On Thursday June 26th during a segment of Anderson Cooper 360, Anderson Cooper asks David Gergen if he had a new side job.

During Friday June 27th Situation Room, Wolf Blitzer, Abbi Tatton and Jack Cafferty discuss so anti-Obama websites including PUMA.

For all the Poppy Harlow fans out there, Don Lemon and Kyra Phillips got the facts on Poppy during the afternoon edition of NewsRoom on Monday June 30.

On Tuesday July 1st, CNN pulled the ever running Pedegg ad from it's airwaves. Going into commercial Kyra Phillips, Don Lemon and Chad Myers had a quick preview of the story coming up after the break during NewsRoom . A few ewwws were certainly involved.

During Tuesday July 1st, Election Center Soledad O'Brien and Ali Velshi do a demonstration with falling Domino's to get the point across.

At the end of Wednesday July 2nd American Morning, John Robert forgot he would be back later in the day to host Situation Room. Kiran Chetry was happy to remind John that being on air for 6 live hours can do that to you. John considered a quick nap to which Tony Harris seemingly agreed.

To all our American readers, have a fun and safe Independence Day. Happy 4th of July to all!!!

Spring Has Sprung!

If you caught our sister blog, All Things Anderson on April Fools Day you saw we temporarily had become All Things John Roberts. TV Guide recently did an interview with John about American Morning, Kiran Chetry and working in the news biz. To read the article, follow the link.

Well spring has finally arrived and one of the best indicators is the beginning of baseball season. I came across a really great article about Robin Meade at Turner Field. Sounds like if Robin wants a career change she may want to talk to Cleveland Indians pitching coach, Carl Willis. To read the article, follow the link.

Another tell tale sign of spring arriving is commencements and convocations. Bill Schneider will be the keynote speaker at Brandeis' 57th commencement ceremony May 18. Bill will also receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University during commencement. For more information follow the link.

Ladies Night

I came across an online article Mark Schwed of the Palm Beach Post recently did an article on some of the major female anchors in cable news. Included in the article were Heidi Collins, Kiran Chetry, Erica Hill, Robin Meade and Christi Paul as well as other female anchor from other cable stations. To read about all the ladies, click here. I enjoyed it but I must say I was a little disappointed that Kyra Phillips was not included.

At the end of last year I read an article about 2007 being the deadliest year for journalist. It caught my eye because I am such a huge follower of the news (You have to be when you blog). Well I came across an email about Christiane Amanpour and this very topic. The following is part of the article that was accompanying the email.

Attacks on the Press, our annual worldwide survey, will have an international release in various cities on Monday, February 4. This year’s edition includes analyses of emerging trends as reported by our program coordinators and researchers. Bob Dietz explores the myriad of press freedom issues confronting China as it gears up for the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing. Carlos Lauría examines how government censors television in Venezuela. Joel Campagna investigates a creeping trend in the Middle East, where governments quietly manipulate press laws. Nina Ognianova explores how the Kremlin’s tactics to undermine press freedom are influencing other parts of the region. And Tom Rhodes explores the downturn of press freedom in many new African democracies.

The book features a preface from CNN’s Christiane Amanpour as well as an introduction from Joel Simon. Attacks on the Press in 2007 will be released simultaneously on our Web site, http://www.cpj.org/index.html. Copies of the book will be available through Brookings Institution, http://www.brookings.edu/. To read the entire article, click here.

News From Headline News

Headline News' Robin & Company to become Morning Express with Robin Meade

Monday, November 5th, Headline News' morning program Robin & Company will become Morning Express with Robin Meade. Noted as "Your News in the Fast Lane", Morning Express will be promoted as the fastest morning news show on television. Morning Express airs Monday to Friday 6AM – 10 AM ET.

October Ratings: Glenn Beck's Big Month

Headline News' Glenn Beck had its best month ever in October. Beck had 360,000 total viewers and 172,000 in A25-54. The radio talker moved to TV and Headline News 15 months ago. And he's about to get some new competition. On Monday, his CNN colleague Lou Dobbs moves to 7pm ET.

Larry King Participates in Ottawa Fundraiser

Since Larry King airs on Headline News in the morning, I thought I would share this article I found about Larry King in the Ottawa Citizen about Larry King’s appearance at a fundraiser put on by the Jewish National Fun of Ottawa.

“I was just a little kid in Brooklyn, New York, who just wanted to be a broadcaster. That’s all I wanted to be,” said Mr. King. Mr. King was a hit with the audience, telling funny story after funny story in his usual folksy manner. He recalled the time Marlon Brando planted a wet one on him during the first of his two interviews with the legendary actor.
“I’d never been kissed on the lips by a man in my life!” he said. “And I have to confess, I can’t stop thinking about it. Sometimes, I get up in the middle of the night yelling ‘Stella!’ And I don’t know anybody named Stella.” After speaking for about 45 minutes, Mr. King thanked his audience for “being so nice and for not giving me a plaque.” Mr. King’s philanthropic work includes the Larry King Cardiac Foundation and his donation of $1 million to George Washington University’s School of Media and Public Affairs for scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Getting to Know Erica Hill

A few months ago our sister blog All Things Anderson had a Q & A with Erica Hill of Headline News’ Prime News with Erica Hill. Erica was so gracious to answer our reader’s questions. Today while I was checking out Erica show page on CNN.com, I can across a couple of videos of Erica answering some questions. Thanks to Quitty for getting the videos up.

Night of the Living Democrats

Sometime earlier today, CNN went green! No, I'm not referring to their carbon footprint. The CNN logo commonly seen at the bottom of the screen turned green, evidently as part of the Planet in Peril promotion.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did you know that CNN Headline News anchor Robin Meade is a former Miss Ohio? Below are excerpts from an article from a March 2007 issue of Atlanta Life Magazine about Robin Meade:
Robin’s Nest: At home with CNN’s Robin Meade
By Allison Weiss Entrekin
It’s that laugh.
It’s a passionate, heartfelt belly laugh. That incredibly genuine laugh goes perfectly with Robin Meade, 37, a drop-dead-gorgeous former Miss Ohio and one of television’s most popular morning news anchors.
Meade and her husband of 13 years, Tim, just moved into her Dunwoody home and several rooms still have unopened boxes. But as she walks from one place to another describing her plans for window treatments and furniture, you start to realize she actually enjoys being in transition. “I feel like this is a new phase for us,” Meade says of her move from their Brookhaven mansion to a smaller, ranch-style home outside the perimeter. “This house is going to be decidedly more casual, because I’m past the stage of being showy and having fancy things.”
“It’s so much fun,” Meade says of the job that has made her a household name. “Obviously, first and foremost, people tune into our show for information. But I feel like we have a little license to laugh out loud if we want to, without being frivolous or off-topic. It’s a nice liberty that I don’t think every news program has.”
Perhaps the one thing Meade doesn’t do is cook, and she admits as much when she walks through her kitchen and announces, “This is where the pizza is delivered!” With opposite schedules–she’s in bed by 6 p.m. and up at 2 a.m., while Tim doesn’t get home from work until 8 at night–it’s easy to understand why she hasn’t been motivated to learn. “We really don’t see each other until the weekends, so it would be silly for either of us to cook, because there’s no one to eat it,” she says.
Instead, Meade spends her afternoons walking her dog, Rocco (named by her viewers, who consider it an abbreviated version of Robin & Company), decorating and “trying to stay awake.” It’s an upside-down routine, but one Meade swears she doesn’t mind. “It was hard to get used to my schedule earlier in my career, but somehow along the way I’ve gotten used to it, and now I can’t imagine doing anything but morning news,” Meade says. “I don’t think my personality would work in any other time slot.”
