Washington (CNN) - The CNN political team welcomed Ron Brownstein as a senior political analyst last week.
The editorial director for National Journal Group will serve as a contributor and provide political perspective to programs network-wide. His first appearance was on CNN's "American Morning."
Washington Bureau Chief and Senior Vice President Sam Feist said, "We're proud that Ron will again be joining CNN to help us cover what's shaping up to be an extraordinary campaign season."
And for Brownstein, the feeling is mutual. "I'm excited to be rejoining a great CNN political team that not only provides comprehensive and insightful coverage of politics from wire to wire, but never loses sight of the fact that campaigns are not a form of entertainment-they are the way we set our direction and settle our differences as a society," he said.
Brownstein is a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and pens a weekly column for National Journal. He regularly contributes articles for both the National Journal and The Atlantic.
Brownstein is also a contributor with ABC News.
Athena Jones will join CNN as a general assignment correspondent, it was announced today by Sam Feist, Washington bureau chief and senior vice president. Jones will report on a wide range of general news stories and will appear on programs across the network. Jones will be based in the Washington D.C. bureau and will begin her position with the network immediately.
“Athena will be an outstanding addition to our political team,” said Feist. “Her experience covering the White House, politics and international affairs are a perfect fit for the Washington bureau.”
“I’m excited to be joining the CNN team,” said Jones. “And look forward to getting started.”
Previously, Jones was a White House producer with NBC, where she wrote packages, produced story segments and reported on air for MSNBC and NBC News. Jones covered the Clinton and Obama presidential campaigns during the 2008 election cycle for NBC and the National Journal. Prior to NBC, Jones served as a freelance segment producer for CNN. From 2001 to 2003, Jones worked as a reporter for Reuters based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she covered the Argentine presidential elections as well as other general news stories. Prior to Reuters, Jones reported on politics and the economy in both Chile and Argentina for Bloomberg News.
Jones graduated cum laude from Harvard University and earned her master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University. She studied Spanish and European politics at the University of Madrid Complutense in Madrid, Spain; and studied Islamic studies at the American Research Center in Cairo, Egypt, with Duke University.

Piers Morgan talked with Wolf Blitzer on Tuesday's The Situation Room about being sucked into the hacking scandal and having his name mentioned today before Parliament.
Mark Joyella has an interesting article posted on Mediaite about Piers Morgan's defense, via Twitter, of himself and Murdoch in the hacking scandal.
CNN’s Piers Morgan took to Twitter this afternoon, defending himself after a British member of Parliament suggested during the question of James and Rupert Murdoch that Morgan had admitted to phone hacking. “That MP just claimed I boasted in my book of using phone-hacking for a scoop,” Morgan tweeted to his 974,000 followers. “Complete nonsense. Just read the book.” Morgan’s memoir, The Insider: Private Diaries of a Scandalous Decade, discusses his time as a British tabloid editor–including working as editor of Murdoch’s now-closed News of the World–and has been singled out by a UK blogger for a reference to the ease of phone hacking. Morgan says he never described actually doing so. “I’ve never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone, or published any stories based on the hacking of a phone.”

To My American Morning Family–
July 29th will be my last day on our show and at CNN. While there are exciting things for me coming up soon, I want you to know how much I will miss spending the wee hours of the morning with you.
As journalists, together we have covered some of the most pivotal stories of our time. I will never forget your dedication and hard work toward getting it right and through it all, we always found a way to laugh and enjoy our work.
The stories we told were generational: The Virginia Tech shootings, the Gulf Oil Spill, President Obama’s inauguration, the Royal Wedding… My special reports on teen drug abuse, autism, the challenge of military families… And who can forget the 8 hour marathon shows we did on election mornings, and on and on….Together we’ve had a front row seat to history.
The “thank yous” could go on forever. But Jim Walton, Jon Klein and Joel Cheatwood made the call to give me an opportunity I will treasure forever.
The nearly 5 years here at CNN have been some of the most exciting, challenging and rewarding of my career.

CNN host and former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan may be asked to appear before the inquiry investigating the hacking scandal currently engulfing U.K. media. The Guy Fawkes blog, which wrote about Morgan’s possible involvement yesterday, today posted statements from MPs suggesting that Morgan should appear to explain what he knew about hacking, either at the Mirror or elsewhere. The blog also excerpts from Morgan’s 2005 autobiography, which seems to indicate that he was at least aware of the technique used to hack into voicemails as far back as 2001.

A U.K. political blog alleges that phone hacking was not contained to News Corp.’s News of the World, and that News competitor The Daily Mirror also engaged in the practice. The editor of the Mirror at the time? Piers Morgan, now a primetime host on CNN.
The Guido Fawkes blog, led by libertarian blogger Paul Staines, charges that Morgan was aware that at least one scoop was obtained by hacking a celebrity’s voicemail, but decided to publish it anyway, in an effort to revive the brand of the paper’s gossip column:
The paper’s editor at the time, one Piers Morgan, was receiving flak for the fact that his 3AM Girls gossip section was dire rubbish and lacked any bite compared to Morgan’s old Bizarre column in News International’s Sun. Morgan decided to let 3AMGirl Jessica Callan break the illegally obtained story under her byline in order to try and rid the column of its banal reputation.
The parent company of The Daily Mirror responded to the then rumors a few days ago, saying “Trinity Mirror’s position is clear. Our journalists work within the criminal law and the PCC code of conduct.”

CNN has unveiled a new evening lineup with anchors Erin Burnett, Anderson Cooper and Piers Morgan to launch this fall, it was announced today by Ken Jautz, executive vice president, CNN/U.S.
Beginning Aug. 8, CNN will broadcast its flagship nightly news program AC360, anchored by Anderson Cooper, live at 8pm and re-air it in its current timeslot of 10pm.
In the fall, CNN will premiere a new general news program with Erin Burnett, which will air at 7pm ET and re-air at 11pm ET. Piers Morgan Tonight will continue to air at 9pm and 12am ET.
John King USA will kick off the evening at 6pm. The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer will continue as a two-hour daily program, airing in a new time slot of 4-6pm. CNN Newsroom will now air from 9am-4pm. The full programming schedule is provided below.
“The new line-up showcases anchors who are experienced reporters in covering stories that span the globe,” said Jautz. “We created a nightly schedule that brings together the best of CNN’s journalism on a wide range of topics from politics and the economy to global and world events, as well the best newsmaker and celebrity interviews. “I’m looking forward to the new time slot and am excited to share AC360 with a new audience at 8pm, while still connecting with my regular viewers at 10pm,” said Cooper.

If you read between the lines it looks as if not much will change with CNN's programming until September 26th. That's not surprising, major changes in CNN's lineup traditionally are rolled out in September. Rumors that Erin Burnett will be in primetime were bolstered this week when TVNewswer posted a Burnett ad for a senior writer, from the Turner website, that specifically classifies the program as 'nightly'.
