*CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien reports on Marlen Esparza’s Olympic dreams. The International Olympic Committee has allowed female boxing into competition – for the first time – in the 2012 games. Five-time U.S. national champion, 21-year-old Esparza weighs 112 pounds and hits so quickly and so hard that she has to spar with men. She is beautiful and oozes charm, but also has been fixated on the male-dominated boxing since she was 11 years old – shunning friends, boyfriends, a social life, and even TV to make time to train. She was smart enough to earn full scholarships to top colleges, but postponed college because she and her family dream she will one day represent the U.S. in the Olympics, giving their Mexican-American community a hero that could push aside negative stereotypes. Standing in Esparza’s way are the competitors who share her Olympic aspirations, a mirror of the kind of girls who box in this country – mostly blue collar, women of color, who struggle in what is traditionally a man’s sport. Chief among them, and also profiled, is Cristina Cruz, a Puerto Rican from Hell’s Kitchen.
** CNN’s Joe Johns draws upon recently released FBI and Justice Department documents to tell the story of the mysterious 2001 bioterrorism poisonings that killed five people and sickened 17 more. Threatening letters – using jihadist language – were enclosed with anthrax and mailed to media organizations and the U.S. Capitol shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks upon the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Weaving together interviews with people central to the investigation, Johns follows the trail of evidence revealing where authorities missed important clues, wrongly focused on an innocent man, and ultimately built a case against a civilian scientist working in a U.S. Military laboratory. Since the suspect committed suicide and the government’s case was built upon circumstantial evidence, doubts linger about his guilt – ten years after the anthrax attacks.

CNN, Arizona Republican Party to Present Presidential Primary Debate
“Arizona is a key state that will play a pivotal role in helping Republicans choose their presidential nominee,” said Sam Feist, CNN Washington bureau chief and senior vice president. “CNN is honored to provide voters in Arizona and around the country an opportunity to hear the GOP candidates present their vision for the future.”
“I’ve been in politics a long time, but I can’t remember a more critical election than this,” said Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. “When it comes to some of the hallmark issues facing our country – whether illegal immigration, the housing crisis or the ongoing power struggle between the states and federal government – Arizona is at the forefront. These are national issues, certainly. But Arizonans live and breathe them. So, I’m thrilled that the Arizona Republican Party and CNN have reached agreement on a debate, and optimistic that when the candidates come to Arizona, they’ll meet our voters and offer meaningful solutions to the problems facing our state and nation.”
As previously announced, CNN and the Western Republican Leadership Conference will present a debate on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Controversy Over CNN and the Tea Party Debate
The American Journalism Review has an interesting prospective published on the ethics of CNN's airing of the Tea Party Debate a few weeks ago. Author Caitlin Johnston argues that the Tea Party is a PAC (political action committee) whose purpose is to influence the process not to just make voters aware of the facts like other organizations who sponsor debates.
CNN's Sam Feist is quoted in the article defending CNN's decision on the debate, as we would expect. Marvin Kalb, former network correspondent and Murrow Professor Emeritus at Harvard says, "News organizations should not be sponsoring political events. They should be covering political events."
The Society of Professional Journalists warns against such alliances in its Code of Ethics. Rule No. 1under "act independently": "Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived."

Ari Fleischer Joins CNN as Political Contributor
As the nation looks to the 2012 election season, CNN continues to expand its team of political contributors with the addition of former White House Secretary Ari Fleischer, it was announced today by Sam Feist, CNN senior vice president and Washington bureau chief. Fleischer will serve as contributor to programs across the network as well as special political programming.
“Ari’s extraordinary experience in the political arena and in the White House make him an invaluable contributor to the network,” said Feist. “We’re thrilled to have Ari on board and our viewers will appreciate his keen insight as we head into this election cycle.”
“Having worked on a successful presidential campaign and having spent 21 years in Washington, I’m looking forward to joining CNN as a regular contributor,” said Fleischer. “It’s shaping up as a red hot political year and I’m eager to lend my perspective to it.”
Prior to starting his own company, Ari Fleischer Sports Communications Inc., Fleischer was the primary spokesperson for President Bush and delivered the daily White House briefings from 2001 to 2003. He previously served as the senior communications advisor and spokesman for the Bush-Cheney presidential campaign. While working for George W. Bush, Fleischer served as spokesman during the historic 2000 presidential recount, 9/11 attacks, and the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Fleischer was also the national spokesman and communications director for Elizabeth Dole’s run for the presidency, and he also served as the communications director for the House Committee on Ways and Means from 1994 to 1999. From 1989 to 1994, Fleischer served as press secretary to New Mexico Senator Pete Domenici, and from 1983 to 1989, he served as press secretary to two members of Congress from New York, and he also worked on several political campaigns. Fleischer is the author of a New York Times best seller, Taking Heat, which details his years in the White House.

CNN's Four Original Documentaries Marking 9/11
9/11 Ten Years Later
“It was a day that changed us all and CNN is leveraging its unmatched resources to cover remembrances from around the nation and the world as we look back on 9/11 and what it means a decade later,” says Bart Feder, senior vice president of programming for CNN. “In addition, these documentaries tell stories we feel will evoke pride in the heroism and bravery of the Americans who risked their lives, and some who sacrificed themselves on that day to save others. And, they present an opportunity to remember the difficult work of first responders – and our servicemen and women on the front lines overseas – who continue to try to keep this nation safe each day.”
On Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 11:00pm (replay on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 8:00pm), CNN will debut FOOTNOTES OF 9/11, featuring interviews with people who went to work on Sept. 11, 2001 – and unexpectedly became part of history. Each of the eight people profiled by investigative correspondent Drew Griffin for this documentary is mentioned in The 9/11 Commission Report – their unique experiences are drawn from the 1,742 footnotes of that report and offer critical detail to the tragic events of that day – are literal and figurative footnotes to one of America’s darkest days. They include ticket agents who checked in some of the terrorists, a maintenance technician who answered a call from one of the planes under attack, and the Lt. Col. in the Massachusetts Air National Guard – also a United Airlines pilot – who scrambled to provide defense to New York, and faced possibly having to shoot down a passenger plane.
On Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 11:00pm (replay on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 9:00pm), DR. SANJAY GUPTA REPORTS: TERROR IN THE DUST, will examine how responders who breathed in the toxic dust and noxious fumes at New York City’s Ground Zero are coping with the health effects of the attacks. The environmental hazards at the World Trade Center disaster site – mercury from fluorescent light bulbs, dioxin and benzene emitted as the jets burned, asbestos from the building materials, and more – have caused severe respiratory ailments, immune problems and, some suspect, a greatly increased cancer risk. Among those who speak to Dr. Gupta are two brothers – firefighters who searched for survivors in the pile of the collapsed towers – one whose lungs are now failing and the other who appears to have had no permanent physical effects. Ten years after the attacks chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta speaks to first responders who continue to experience emotional trauma. Dr. Gupta’s investigation includes never before broadcast footage of the collapse of the Twin Towers, the medical consequences of the killer dust, and safety recommendations for future crisis responses.
BEYOND BRAVERY: THE WOMEN OF 9/11 will air on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 11:00pm (replay on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 9:00pm), and profiles the sometimes overlooked female rescue workers who raced to the Twin Towers in the wake of the attack. Anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien looks at the work of these rescue workers over the decade following their life-altering experiences. Among the stories of these heroic women of New York’s Ground Zero is an African-American firefighter whose company lost seven of the 342 firefighters who died that day. She is pushing to recruit more women to this dangerous job, even as the number of female firefighters has dropped to less than one percent of the NYFD. O’Brien also speaks with the family of a decorated police officer and mother who was photographed rescuing survivors just moments before the collapse of the towers. O’Brien reports the present-day health and emotional struggles of these unsung heroines and hears about their determination to be prepared for the next attack – and to restore hope.
On Friday, Sept. 9 at 11:00pm (with replays on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 8:00pm and 11:00pm), CNN will premiere a special presentation from TIME in association with HBO, BEYOND 9/11: PORTRAITS OF RESILIENCE. Captured in words and moving images, this documentary features untold stories drawn from 40 women and men who led and sacrificed for America in the hours, days, and months that followed the attacks. Working with the editors of TIME, award-winning photographer Marco Grob produced an astonishing set of portraits which are coupled with dramatic recollections from government leaders, survivors of the towers, and first responders.
Kathleen Johnston, Brian Rokus, and Bud Bultman produced FOOTNOTES of 9/11, Stephanie Smith and Roni Selig produced TERROR IN THE DUST, and Rose Arce and Geraldine Moriba produced BEYOND BRAVERY.

UNWELCOME: THE MUSLIMS NEXT DOOR – Sunday 8:00PM-9:00PM, 11:00PM - 12:00AM, 2:00AM- 3:00AM
Murfreesboro, Tennessee (pop. 100,000) is home to 190 churches… and one mosque. Five times a day members of the Muslim community gather in Islamic Center of Murfreesboro to pray… men in one room, women and children in another. Muslims have lived in Murfreesboro for decades, yet when plans to build a new mosque were approved this summer, questions were raised and the resulting backlash and acts of vandalism revealed a community divided by deep-rooted suspicions about Muslims, and Islam. Ten years after 9/11, CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien reports the story of Muslims and non-Muslims, from Murfreesboro to Manhattan, struggling to find common ground in America.
