CNN Parts Ways With AP

CNN announced on Monday that it will no longer use content from the Associated Press, ending a partnership that had been in place for decades.
Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide, said in a memo to employees that the decision to discontinue the network's use of the wire service was part of an ongoing strategy to "more fully leverage CNN's global newsgathering investments." "We will no longer use AP materials or services," Walton wrote. "The content we offer will be distinctive, compelling and, I am proud to say, our own."

Some Reporters Have All the Luck

Anderson Cooper complained on Monday's AC360 that no one from BP would talk with him. It seems John Roberts has much better luck. This was just released by CNN:
John Roberts, anchor of CNN's American Morning, has secured unprecedented access to Doug Suttles, Chief Operating Officer of BP Exploration and Production. Roberts will take a chopper tour and head out to the oil rig with Suttles for an inside look at BP's efforts to stop the disastrous oil leak.
The interview will begin airing at 6 a.m. ET Thursday on American Morning. Transcript and video will be available tomorrow morning. Roberts will co-anchor the program from the Gulf region through Friday.

Baton Rouge (May 11, 2010) - On Wednesday June 9, 2010, the Coalition to
Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) will recognize nine award recipients as
outstanding stewards of Louisiana's coast at the fifteenth annual Coastal
Stewardship Awards Banquet to be held at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol
Center, Baton Rouge, LA beginning at 6:00 p.m. We are pleased to have
James Carville as the evening's keynote speaker.

The Coastal Stewardship Awards program is sponsored by CRCL to recognize
significant contributions by an individual or group in the effort to save
Louisiana's coast. This year's recipients have demonstrated an
exceptional commitment to the preservation and restoration of Louisiana's
fragile coast, and we congratulate them for their outstanding
accomplishments.

At a time when many residents in South Louisiana and along the Gulf Coast
are struggling to respond to the BP Oil Spill, we believe the Coastal
Stewardship Awards Banquet is an appropriate time to draw attention to the
challenges facing our coast and to celebrate the tremendous contributions
that individuals and organizations can make to restoring and protecting
coastal Louisiana.

CRCL is pleased to announce that James Carville, America's best-known
political consultant, will be the keynote speaker at the 2010 Coastal
Stewardship Awards Banquet. A Louisiana native, Mr. Carville returned home
in 2008 and has been a strong voice for coastal protection and restoration
on a national scale. Mr. Carville's experience includes a long list of
electoral successes, a knack for steering overlooked campaigns to
unexpected landslide victories and for re-making political underdogs into
upset winners.

James Carville is an author, actor, producer, talk-show host, speaker and
restaurateur. Most recently, Carville is hosting Sirius XM radio's "60/20
Sports" show with Luke Russert, and is a frequent political commentator
and contributor on CNN. He also serves as a Professor of Practice at
Tulane University in New Orleans, where he lives with his wife Mary
Matalin and their two daughters.

The Coastal Stewardship Awards program will take place on the second
evening of the State of the Coast Conference. Conference attendees are
welcome to attend, but must register and pay separately for the Coastal
Stewardship Awards. The program begins at 6:00 p.m. and is open to
members of the public who have reserved tickets in advance. The evening
consists of a reception, banquet dinner and keynote address followed by

Jeffrey Toobin Helps Celebrate 75 Years of the Brooklyn Law Review

On April 15, the Law School celebrated 75 years of the Brooklyn Law Review with a dinner held at the Forchelli Center at Feil Hall and a captivating speech by Jeffrey Toobin, senior legal analyst for CNN and staff writer at The New Yorker. Toobin was welcomed by nearly 200 Law Review alumni and current Law Review students from as far away as Miami and Montreal.

Toobin, who is no stranger to the demands of being on Law Review (he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review), spoke about his latest book, The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court (2007), which he explained was inspired by The Brethren, by Bob Woodward and Scott Armstrong. He discussed the Rehnquist Court, and the up and coming vacancy on the Supreme Court created by Justice Stephens’ retirement. He also shared some candid moments from The Nine’s reporting process.

One amusing story he shared concerned Justice Souter and Justice Breyer, who are often mistaken for one another. “When Justice Souter was driving to his house in New England, he stopped for a bite to eat along the way and was approached by a diner who said, ‘You’re Justice Breyer, right?’ Not wanting to embarrass the gentleman, Justice Souter said, ‘Yes, I am.” The diner asked, ‘What is the greatest honor of serving on the Court?’ After a moment, Justice Souter replied, ‘I guess I would have to say it is the privilege of being able to serve with Justice Souter’.”

Toobin also talked about his experience writing Too Close to Call: The 36-Day Battle to Decide the 2000 Election, and his many attempts to interview Al Gore for the book. Years later, when the two would meet on a different occasion, Toobin approached Gore to interview him for The Nine. Toobin recalled his conversation with the former Vice President: “I said, ‘I can’t get over it. I may be the biggest Bush v. Gore junkie.’ Vice President Gore replied, ‘You may be the second.’”

While Toobin was certainly the evening’s celebrity draw, BLS alumni were also very excited to return to the Law School, to reconnect with old classmates and teachers, and share memories of their time on Law Review.

“I remember Law Review as being a cohesive, interesting and talented group of students--and a LOT of hard work,” said Janet Ginzberg, Senior Staff Attorney at Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, who made the trip to Brooklyn for the Law Review celebration. “The event was beautifully done. Jeffrey Toobin was an excellent speaker, the food was great, and Feil Hall, which didn't exist when I was at BLS, is a wonderful space for events. I was impressed by how many professors and former students came to celebrate their time at BLS.”

CNN/U.S. president Jon Klein announced last week that in June CNN will present four landmark documentaries covering such controversial and significant issues as the impact of toxic chemicals on our health, a gay couple’s journey to marriage and a baby, an investigation into one of the nation’s most shocking crime stories, and on Fathers’ Day, a heartwarming look at a dad, who faced with cancer, seeks alternative ways to insure his twin daughters are taken care of in the event he dies.
