Your Views on the News January 31, 2010

We've been so busy trying to keep up with all CNN's coverage of the disaster in Haiti that we haven't had a discussion post in a while. Now that the little CNN=Politics bug is back in our lives we thought you might want to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly...... or whatever.

Kyra Phillips, John Zarrella and Steve Wonder Team Up

John Zarrella did a piece this week on a Haitian violinist who was severely injured in the earthquake. The piece struck a chord (forgive the terrible pun) with Kyra Phillips when it aired on her Newsroom program and with the help of Stevie Wonder Phillips was able to provide the victim with a happy outcome to his story.

Susan Lisovicz to Leave CNN

TVNewser is reporting that 'CNN's longtime correspondent at the New York Stock Exchange, Susan Lisovicz, is leaving the network.
A CNN insider told them that Lisovicz told colleagues last week that she will be leaving the network after her contract was not renewed.'

We don't know exactly when Lisovicz began her tenure at CNN but this photo of her doing Headline News dates from the early 1990's.
ATC had a tip about this in yesterday's comments (Susan Candiotti post) but couldn't confirm it. It's a tough time to be working at CNN if you're female and over 40.

Carville & Matalin Mentioned in Washington Whispers

A few weeks ago, Paul Bedard once again mentioned James Carville and Mary Matalin in his Washington Whispers column for US News & World Report.

It's bad enough for their marriage that Democrat James Carville and Republican Mary Matalin don't agree on politics. So please don't ask them to appear on weekend TV shoutfests together. "I don't like to fight with my husband on TV," Matalin says. "We have to get a martini right after." Over the years, they've chosen to appear jointly only on the late Tim Russert's Meet the Press and CNN's State of the Union with John King. "They aren't for having a fight for fight's sake," says Carville.

Larry announced that in the first 30 minutes of the program $700,000 was raised at the Red Cross and UNICEF call centers.

Many others joined in the program to make pleas for donations or answer phones - among them; Sarah Ferguson, Snoop Dogg, Scarlette Johansen, Jon Mayer, Jennifer Lopez, Ben Stiller, Benicio del Toro, Joel Madden and Paul Abdul. Mick Jagger joined in via Skype and then he and Wycleff Jean sang "Hideaway."

It was suggested the Larry put his suspenders up for auction and the first pair sold for $1,000, so he offered up another pair!

Sanjay Gupta on Oprah

Dr. Sanjay Gupta appeared on the Oprah show today. Oprah opened the segment by recapping Sanjay's activities as a doctor in Haiti as well as a reporter. First was video of his treating a 15 day old baby with some sort of head injury, video of him spending the night in the field hospital treating 25 critically injured patients alone after the doctors packed up and left due to security concerns, and then video of Sanjay being helicoptered by the US military to an aircraft carrier offshore to preform a 90 minute emergency surgery on a 15 year old girl who had concrete embedded in her brain from the earthquake.

Sanjay was then brought into the studio from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, via Skype. Oprah asked Sanjay about this morning's 6.1 aftershock, and he said he definitely did. That although they are called aftershocks, a 6.1 feels like a real earthquake. He spoke of it being hard to imagine how all the debris will get cleaned up. Again, after this morning's aftershock, assessment teams will be looking for people with physical injuries, but there is a lot of emotional anxiety as well. People are so frightened you can see it in their faces as they walk around.

Talk then turned to the medical issue of how a lot of people lived, but barely, and now they need medical care that they just aren't getting. He spoke about all the "preventable deaths" because personnel and supplies just aren't available. Oprah asked him if i was a money problem or a distribution problem and Sanjay said it was definitely a distribution problem at this point -- there are supplies at the airport but not getting to where they need to go to help people. Oprah asked him "who's in charge" and he said that was a good question, because minutes and hours is how you measure the speed of medical relief and it's been 8 days!

Oprah said Sanjay told her that of all the crisis he's personally seen, Haiti has been the most worrisome and asked him to elaborate. He started out by saying you need to look at where Haiti started - one of the most impoverished nations in the world, their medical infrastructure was terrible, non-existent in so many places; they had one of the worst physician to patient ratios in the world, and that was the starting point 8 days ago. If you start there and then the earthquake hit which decreased the amount of hospitals and personnel available while exponentially increasing the number of people who need that infrastructure -- what worries him is how do you ever catch up.

He spoke of the differences with the Tsunami, because people either lived or died in the Tsunami and needed food and water -- where in Haiti people lived, but with catastrophic injuries and they need that care. They talked about the need of an infrastructure for distribution. While security is obviously important but unless you save people's lives, unless you get them some care, security is not going to matter. Sanjay states that when you increase the access to medical care you will decrease security concerns. People are desperate and that's why the security concerns go up. It all dovetails together.

“James Dean of Asia” On CNN’S Talk Asia

CNN recently released a press release announcing an interview with Lee Byung-hun that will air on Talk Asia

Dubbed the “James Dean of Asia”, Lee Byung-hun is one of South Korea’s favourite leading actors, starring in over twenty soap operas and more than a dozen films. He broke into mainstream Hollywood with his role as Storm Shadow in “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”, and the Korean superstar soon won fans with his good looks and versatile acting skills. On this week’s TALK ASIA, CNN’s Anna Coren spends the day with Lee and joins him on the red carpet of the 14th Pusan International Film Festival’s opening night.

The Korean actor’s Hollywood debut, Stephen Sommers’ action flick “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” grossed over US$300 million worldwide. With a sequel already in the works, Lee reveals that he actually was not aware of the toy action figures and even initially turned down the role: “When I first heard about G.I. Joe from my agent, I didn’t know what it was. I refused it at first. But everybody told me to do it because it’s going to be so huge and it’s going to be a huge opportunity to go there. One of my very good friends Park Chan-wook, who made “Old Boy”, advised me if you really want to go to Hollywood, why don’t you do it? It will be a very good opportunity.”

Despite his fluent English, the thought of acting in western films never crossed the 39-year-old’s mind: ”I actually didn’t think about going to Hollywood. A few years ago, nobody thought it would happen. Because it’s just a dream for Korean actors. Nowadays it’s not a dream anymore. It’s reality.” His performance impressed Josh Hartnett, his co-star from “I come with the Rain” as the American actor says: “I became a big fan of his on set because of his sort of amazing work ethic, his ability to be at once kind of a big movie star and an incredibly gifted actor.”

Lee’s popularity at home has not been diminished by his time spent in Hollywood as the TV drama “Iris” he recently starred in topped the ratings. TALK ASIA visits the set of “Iris”, Korea’s most expensive soap opera, where the star explains why the ‘Hallyu’ or ‘Korean wave’, has expanded rapidly worldwide and increased cultural interest in Korea: “The Korean drama still talks about the family thing, their love, their hate. They could feel the old emotions. That’s why the Japanese people and Chinese people love the Korean dramas.”

His career took off domestically with “Joint Security Area” - a box office smash about how a secret friendship is formed between the North and South Korean soldiers working in the DMZ, as he recalls: “We were surprised by the size of the audience. That movie made me so popular and famous in Korea. So I was very thankful to Mr. Park (Park Chan-wook).” Lee believes that the movie struck a chord with the audience: “It’s not about the ideology or something like that. It’s not about politics. That movie was based on the truth.” When asked if he sees a reunification between the North and the South in his lifetime, the South Korean replies: “personally, I hope so. Yes, it could happen I think.”

Often under the spotlight, Lee admits he misses being anonymous. He describes to Coren how he pretended to be a taxi driver once to enjoy those times: “Actually it was illegal because I don’t have taxi driver’s license. But anyway, I borrowed a taxi from my friend. He was the boss of the taxi company. I borrowed a taxi and I drove for a few days. It was so fun and such an interesting experience. (Coren: So you’re picking up people and taking them to destinations?) Yes, nobody recognised me because I was hiding everything. I thought they were scared because nobody does that with the mask, hat and glasses. No driver does that.”

Lee Byung-hun’s full interview will be available after the first airing online at www.cnn.com/talkasia.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta Update

For those of you that didn't catch AC360 last night, Dr. Gupta was reporting live from a make-shift hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti where UN doctor's had just arrived to help the injured. His report was to be about the good news of the doctor's arrival but instead it turned into the sad story of the doctors and staff packing up and leaving. Sanjay was in disbelief as he reported their departure and he was told it was due to security reasons. They also took the majority of the medicine and supplies with them.

However, Dr. Gupta stayed behind to look after the sick, some of whom had just come out of surgery. Here are some Tweets from him tonight and also from Danielle Dellorto who writes and produces Dr. Gupta's show.

John King Discusses Visiting All 50 States

The Washington Post posted at article from the AP's David Bauder who talked to CNN's John King about having reported from all 50 states over the past year for State of the Union:

John King had no thoughts about trying to touch 'em all when he began traveling to different states for his CNN "State of the Union" show.

Part of the way in it became a goal, realized when King reported on the tourism industry from Jackson, Wyo., on Sunday's program. He traveled to all 50 states in one year, accomplished just as he's about to leave. King's Sunday gig will soon end, as he prepares to launch a new daily show in the time slot vacated by Lou Dobbs.

King believed he could better illustrate many of the issues faced by Washington leaders by leaving Washington.

"It's not just a gimmick to say we went to all 50 states," he said. "It's worth doing because we learned so much. My body is a little beat up, but I wouldn't trade this for the world."

...

It wasn't hard to find stories illustrating the nation's economic woes, but different states were affected in different ways, he said.

"If that doesn't inform your thinking or the questions you ask, then it's time to do something else," King said. "I was privileged and a little numb by what I learned and what I saw. I just hope it makes you a better reporter. I hope it makes you understand. The defining challenge in our business, at a time when people have so many choices, is to be relevant."

... to read the full article: CNN's John King hits 50-state marker

The article also mentions that CNN's Candy Crowley and Gloria Borger, who both recently anchored State of the Union in King's absence, may be in the running to take over for King when he starts his new primetime program. In case you didn't get to see them anchoring, below are video clips from an interview that each of them did.

Nicole Lapin to CNBC

Yesterday, CNBC announced that former CNN anchor Nicole Lapin would be anchoring "Worldwide Exchange". The Business Insider posted an article about the move:

CNBC just announced that it has scored Nicole Lapin as an anchor on CNBC’s “Worldwide Exchange” based in the U.S.

Lapin had been one of the youngest anchors in the country, and possibly the youngest anchor ever on CNN. She was born on March 7, 1984. That makes her just 25.

She attended Harvard when she was just 15, studied European Union politics at Institut d`Études Politiques de Paris, and graduated as valedictorian from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism.

CNBC’s "Worldwide Exchange" is the show that’s on before Squawk Box, airing Monday through Friday from 4 AM to 6 AM. It has anchors in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Ross Westgate sits in London and Christine Tan sits in Singapore. Lapin will run the U.S. desk. CNBC says that its the only business show with anchors on three continents.
